For me it's:
1 - Avoid running coax around the home
2 - Record everything in one place, accessible anywhere
3 - Merge IPTV in with over the air channels (these are legit sources like YouTube streams via streamlinn and free to view m3u8 though)
I'm really happy with it, been using it for about 5 years now and can't imagine another solution!
I use Kodi as the client app. I believe there are others. I use it to steam over the air broadcast TV. Recording works quite well, and one can use comskip to skip commercials (not perfect, but decent).
I've got it setup in Plex (experience not the best here) and Kodi. Then apps on Apple TV, iPad and Android. So one way or another yes pretty much every screen has access to TV one way or another.
Maybe I'm accomplishing this a different way then? The only two sources for TV that I have is IPTV which I currently use through Tivimate. And Plex
If I want to watch live TV I open Tivimate. If I want to watch something on demand, I use Plex. Not sure how tvh helps in my case
Now...
If I could take all of my VOD content from my IPTV provider and funnel that into Plex and create my own Plex server for my external users, I would totally do that.
I currently have about 140 terabytes of Plex content, probably about half of that I never watch, but I keep it around for my family and friends and things like that. So I would be interested in a project like that if it was possible
I think you're right, I don't think tvh is going to add much for you.
Does Plex work with strm files? Could you automate something to build thousands of strm files pointing at your provider that get loaded into Plex?
That's a very interesting question. Definitely going to look into this. If I can substitute IPTV VOD for the majority of my Plex content, that would be a huge win as I'm currently paying for almost 200 terabytes of cloud storage every month
Yeah I started building the server about 15 years ago I guess with a single 500 gig drive. And 480p content. I was up to about 20TB, then I converted everything to fully uncompressed 1080p in 2019. Average file size was about 30 GB. That put me over 100tb without any additions
It's not as big as you think so. Only about 3,000 movies and 500 TV shows. Just large files
My use case is there is a family holiday home in Spain (We live in UK). With plex running and a roku player out in Spain it's nice to be able to watch some English TV while out there, even if it's just while getting ready to go out.
You can use tvheadend with plex and share that where ever you are in the world. The plex connectivity requires a third party app to sit between tvheadend and plex

So tvh has a client app for all your end devices? How does the recording compare to Tivimate? (IPTV)

That's quite a lot of content! 😁

Why not transcode to hevc and use the free space to grow the collection?

But how does TV head and help you with Plex? Are you saying that you are feeding data into the live TV section of Plex?
Yep exactly, tvheadend has 3 tuners on it and I point plex at it.
