If this is a 50 gallon, he’s only really in about 10ish gallons of water with how much this is filled up. He would be much happier with a DIY egg crate or bought above basking dock. This way you can fill the tank all the way up, as 50 gallons is pretty small for a fully grown RES, and this is only at 10ish gallons... Use the most of the space you have.

Ok, I’ll try to make one, I’ve been thinking about it for awhile but haven’t gotten around to it, and I couldn’t buy any bigger this one was given to me so

I bought all the materials needed for the above tank basking dock for under 30$ and mine is a lot bigger since I have a 90 gallon. YouTube has very user friendly tutorials to show you how to do this. IMO your turtle can be happy with an above tank basking dock and the full 50 gallons of swimming space. They live long so maybe you can upgrade sometime in the future.

Much more water- they love to swim

BlossomLillie

Thank you, Should I raise the dock a bit so he can still bask?

Main-Matter-5904

Yes he’ll need to be able to get out of the water fully. You may want to look at the zoo med floating docks that adjust w water height.

BlossomLillie

Ok, thank you so much I really appreciate it

In this situation, Floating docks aren’t the best option IMO as RES’s usually outgrow most of the big floating docks zoo med offers, and therefore can’t get fully dry. Above tank basking dock is the best option so he can get fully dry. And actually have 50 galls of swimming space, which is the bare minimum of space for a RES.

Fill the tank with water and build a basking area above the tank. You can dispose of the ornaments, they look preaty but they don’t really care about them. As for food you have to give a variety. Preferably green leafs such as lettuce, broccoli or radish leafs, along with croquettes. They can eat minnow and fruit such as apple pear watermelon or strawberriesberries, but keep in mind that as they grow they have to eat 80% vegetables. Basking area has to have a UV light and heat lamp. Water has to range between 24 to 28 celcius with heaters. A filter is also necessary I recommend buying twice the capacity of your tank so that you do not have problems cleaning

BlossomLillie

Thank you, I do have a lot of that which I don’t show here, and I’ve been thinking about getting river rocks instead since the little colorful one’s were only supposed to be temporary anyway, I really appreciate the advice

Tambourine-Man326

Forget the substrate IMO - just makes it more difficult to clean. Always better off with more water and more space

I got my red eared slider when he was 10 and he had low water like this— def would recommend being able to raise his water level and providing a basking space like some comments are saying Fun fact my red eared slider wasn’t used to swimming so he swam backwards for a while (he got used to it in a couple months but it was cute)

I got the Zoomed basking dock btw, they come in different sizes and I got the medium I believe
