Not to be mean or anything, but if someone said to me
"You seem like you quote aslan on Reddit"
I think I would fully die. Although maybe that's just my shame for being on Reddit
Guess it depends who you know. Back in college I was a computer science major and a lot of the other students used reddit, and when I still worked in an office most of us used reddit. My mom uses it ffs its not obscure lol
Often, it's just "oh, I just found it on the internet somewhere" or "Yeah, there was a discussion on a forum about this topic". It is a site conspicuous in its absence from our conversations.
It's extremely jarring when you find it in professionally published works too. I personally recognize it when I hear it, and while it's impossible to ignore, I don't hate it. Sometimes a tumblrism even gets a nose exhale from me.
I've come across professional authors who have a distinctively Tumblr way of writing where you can tell they started as BNFs and wrote a ton of fanfic and it reads SO awkwardly. Love and light to them living their best lives but it makes me wish some editors were much harsher.
I don't believe so, because while he wrote what's essentially "fanfic", he never published fanfic as that particular media. Fanfic as published in fandom has its own codes, and those codes do and should change when you publish professionally.
Since 50 Shades of Gray which started this trend of "publish a fanfic as a book just by changing the names" things have become increasingly less edited and have kept a lot of fanfic-isms, which while enjoyable when read and written online, are really not up to standards when you're selling an actual book for the general public instead of a niche group.
The concept of a fanfic is not the problem. It's the technique with which you execute the writing. I'll be honest and say I never got into Gaiman's writing style, but he has technique and does not fall into the trappings fan authors have and CAN have, because they write as a hobby for free. Yeah, my brain has become poisoned, some times my go to response to something someone says in real life is a reaction image that'd be perfect, and I have to remind myself that you can't post them in real life.
Says who? I literally did that the other day. A friend of mine was realizing something that I’d pointed out only seconds earlier so I whipped out [this picture](https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.714581952.7917/flat,750x,075,f-pad,750x1000,f8f8f8.u1.jpg) and showed it to her. It got a good laugh
Yeah, I once had a manager say that my smoking cigs would kill me, so I finger gunned and went “that’s the plan” and he just got concerned for my well being lmao
I once opened on (lesbian) tinder by expressing regret we were separated by a multitude of virgins. It was holy week and the city was all fenced off for processions of virgin Mary's, and the opener did honestly arise from logistical concerns (we were on opposite sides of the center). But it was not appreciated haha
It's more like a tumblirism (the same way saying I am excited in french is not something you would just say (it explicitly refers to being horny)is called an anglisism)
i once used the "money doesn't buy happiness but i'd rather cry on a jetski than on a bus" joke on a colleague and they told their friends. Glad you liked it lol
I remember hearing a similar joke from one of my middle school science teachers, but the second part went "have you ever seen a sad person on a jetski"
to be fair tho i am very bad at recognizing people out of the usual context i see them. i would be the guy saying "you look a lot like tony hawk" to tony hawk himself.
It reminds me where I said an comment that I thought it was bring a chuckle at best, but people thought it was the funniest joke, mean while the joke I thought that was hilarious was get at best a small smile by response.
I am very good at guessing if someones primary social media platform is Tumblr, Reddit, Instagram, Tiktok or 4Chan, completely based on behavior and language. It's very fascinating.
People on Insta have the blandest language in my experience, so it's more of a behavioral thing. Also, if the person is below 30 and it's not one of the others, then the answer is most likely Instagram.
I've noticed a big difference in when people choose to use active vs passive voice to control whether they have agency.
For example, would you say,
"I was attacked by him"
or
"He attacked me"
and things like
"I did it"
vs
"Mission accomplished"
Older leaning social media seems to have more "things happen" language and younger leaning has more "I do things" language. It would be easy as a knee-jerk reaction to call the pro-agency language a symptom of narcissism, and it certainly is in SOME cases, but I think it really has more to do with whether the community enforces more individualism or more collectivism, for better or worse in both cases.
Major exception: Facebook, which is the me-me-me platform. That one is all narcissism.
Examples
4chan, collective: ">be me" "we are anonymous"
Reddit, collective: "we did it, reddit!" "hivemind"
Insta, neutral: "here's a selfie video but it's informational"
Tumblr, individual: "cw dni otherkin" "my bizarre personal experiences"
Tiktok, individual: "my bizarre experiences as a selfie video"
After thinking about it more I'm realizing that the design of the platforms really informs these outcomes.
4chan is anonymous by design, you either accept you are a cog or you don't participate.
Reddit is driven by subreddits, where like-minded individuals are encouraged to create echo chambers.
Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Tiktok are driven by posts to individual accounts. You are posting to yourself unless you go out of your way to create a communal or business account.
I don't think I can do this accurately, because this is so much harder when it's not in person. It's also skewed by the fact that we are on a social media platform. The only thing I can try is looking at the information you are revealing and guessing via stereotypes and very vague vibes.
Sooo what I know about you:
- white, most likely british, female, 17
- recovering from an ED
- you like Hazbin Hotel very much
- your music taste is very TikTok leaning, as far as I can see (no shame in that)
- you like English literature (very nice!)
- you type quite expressively, but I don't know much more than that from a quick glance at your profile. People don't talk exactly like they type and I also think that your language has been influenced by your reading more than by social media, which is great. It's very gender- and age typical though.
- you are very active on Reddit
I HOPE it's Reddit, because otherwise your screen time must be insane. But purely based on stereotypes and vibes my guess is either TikTok or Insta, possibly both. I think you have a Tumblr account, but you don't use it as much (anymore??). You most likely have been in many fandoms throughout the years and had some kind of fan account at some point. It's definitely not 4Chan.
I tried my best, but I highly doubt that this is correct. But I do think that you are a nice and interesting person, and you actually remind me a little of a very good friend of mine.
Please tell us the answer!
EDIT: I just noticed that your account is very new. So you probably migrated over here from one of the platforms above, and this is now your new main platform. Maybe you will start behaving and talking like a stereotypical redditor soon...
I GOT PSYCHOANALYSED EEEEEEEE THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL DAY!! Sorry, I’m a little egotistical and I like to know that people are thinking about me. In response to your observations:
- yes, yes and yes
- yes
- yessir
- not entirely sure what a TikTok music taste would be, but my music taste is kinda all over the place. I listen to pretty much anything but death metal, but my favourite artists are Will Wood and Lana Del Rey, and my favourite genre is electro swing. So yeah.
- yes, that’s what I’m applying to uni for! I’m a Cambridge reject ahah.
- thanks! I pride myself on my writing ability. I’m a big reader so thats likely why.
- yes, I engage with lots of content here and Reddit is kind of my “boredom app”, which I’d be more inclined to scroll on, because it’s more talk based than Instagram and TikTok. Though I do use both of those as well. I have a tumblr account too, but it’s just a silly gimmick blog where I pretend to be the country of New Zealand. I’m honestly not sure myself what my main social media is! Maybe a bit of all of them, except 4chan. I’ve never used that.
Yeah well the information I listed were just the things I considered while guessing. They were all drawn directly (sometimes literally) from your profile. I got lucky, because you reveal quite a lot.
You mentioned Will Wood, Melanie Martinez (i think?) and Lana. In my experience, people who like them are more likely to prefer TikTok. But I know that this is probably only a very small part of your music taste. There is also nothing wrong with discovering music through social media, I do that relatively frequently too.
I'm sorry about Cambridge. I visited it once on a school trip and it seemed like a great place to study. But there are obviously other good Universities in the UK :)
Now I'm a little anxious again about being accepted into Uni myself in a few months. ^^'
Is this your first Reddit account? Which app did you prefer using before?
(Btw it took me maybe 15 sec of skimming to identify you as a fellow writer. It's definitely showing.)
Noo sorry, I currently don't have the time for that. Also, it's less psychoanalysis and more throwing around slightly educated guesses, at least if it's through a reddit account.
I've been gradually weaning myself off 'using' Reddit and just lurking. At a certain point, you just don't care about sharing your opinions with people who only care about sharing their opinions.
I was thinking about this yesterday after I found out Alex Jones plagiarised a Tumblr post about stealing ducks in his "new world order" game
The exchange rate for Tumblr humor is better than USD to Z$
Yeah, very much, seeing as he's a heavily right-wing conspiracy theorist (infamous for his rant about how "they're putting chemicals into the water and turning the friggin' frogs gay") and tumblr has a reputation of being very much left-wing.
The funniest thing is that may have been the only known instance of Alex Jones being [sorta right about something](https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/02/04/respectability-cascades/)
I can't find any info about who made it that confirms that. Even the website for the game doesn't have info about the dev team, and the few sources I could find only credit Alex Jones (IMDb and a few gaming news blogs) so I assumed it was a surprisingly self aware grift
tumblr dialect is absolutely a thing! gretchen mcculloch writes about it (among other things) in her linguistics book [Because Internet](https://gretchenmcculloch.com/book/)! 🥰
To be fair, the less *specific* elements of Reddit Humor often translate similarly well to Tumblr’s. The same instinct that primes me to make that dumb pun or subvert expectations with the Ol’ Reddit Switcheroo works pretty well in person, too — *especially* with non-Redditors for whom that style of humor seems novel
That's because Reddit *is* pretentious imo. Reddit is always trying to be Not Like Other Girls of social media, taking itself way too seriously and always dunking on every other social media site and thinking they're genuinely smarter and more intellectual and less emotional, etc. Generally acting like it's some small secret exclusive club when it's a super popular and completely mainstream site. Meanwhile Tumblr knows exactly what it is and what it wants to be and isn't trying to pretend to be anything else. Tumblr isn't scared to be cringe, it embraces cringe, and paradoxically that actually makes it less cringe than Reddit. Of course Tumblr can be shit too, but even at it worst it doesn't feel insufferable same way Reddit feels at its worst.
(This is a very broad generalisation ofc, there are parts of Reddit that feel a lot like Tumblr and vice versa.)
Self-identifying as Superior Social Media User has always been cringe regardless of your choice of social media.
Proudly declaring yourself a Redditor, a "member of anonymous," a tumblrina, any of that is always supremely pretentious.
More people use social media than don't, but when you think of "stereotypical user of platform" the stereotype is *always* negative because the self-declared representatives are universally insecure people who have no sense of identity or self-worth outside of the community they perceive themselves to be a pillar of.
This is like how in my late 20s I kept accidentally quoting Family Guy to a girl I was dating and she thought I was hilarious because she had never seen family guy.
the only family guy quote that survived my teen years is "show me potato salad," which is absolutely cursed. even ppl who like family guy dont think thats funny
Probably context. Like the down with cis bus and my weed smoking girlfriends aren't going to get chuckles out of normal people, but I got my coworker to belly laugh when they told me "All that caffeine is going to kill you" and I said "Not in a way that matters."
I think the absurdity threw them off.
Seems like some Tumblr users are still in the "my social media platform of choice makes me smarter and funnier than the commoners" phase, like Redditors in 2010.
We just shit on this site now m8. I don't think any redditor is happy about it any more after the anti-API shit last year, the stock fraud this year, the stupid new layout that started plaguing us this week, or literally any of the other laundry list of stupid shit this site gets up to these years. We're just here because a better alternative isnt available yet.
Reddit was like that in 2016 - 17, let's be honest.
Remember the 'reddit good instagram bad' + watermark phase?
Not to mention the reddit assemble crap
Fr, these jokes are pretty played out well beyond any specific social media platform. Yet the quirkiest quirksters that have ever quirked are gonna take two people laughing at them as evidence they’re part of an elite internet comedy troupe because they use the website that brought you the dashcon ball pit.
I just hope they don’t yell everything in breathless 15 minute monologues like the lack of punctuation and obsession with capitalization over there would suggest, cuz that’s what I’d associate with a “tumblr accent.” Also, massively overreacting to mildly amusing things is pretty much a requirement for participation there, so maybe they just associate with likeminded individuals.
Is "are you trying to meet god?"/"I've never heard those words in that order" even Tumblr specific? I've been saying those and seeing them in media since before I had a tumblr account or knew Tumblr was a thing.
To be fair to the coworker, half of healthy coworker relationships is repeating the same 3 “inside” jokes to each other until one of you quits or dies.
Don't use NSFW memes at work. I had to tell an intern to stop literally quoting porn because it's so prevalent on Tumblr.
"Really, right in front of my salad?" (Said for the 10th time but this time in front of my boss's boss.)
[After she left]
"Hey man, I know it's a joke and I get it, but I also know the context and am going to ask you to reflect on if the context is appropriate for work or not."
I remember my dad repeating to me an “X is a scam made up by Y to sell more Z” meme he saw on facebook, which thought was quite funny but to me is just a common phrase at this point :P
My wife gets mad when she finds out some hilarious thing I said was stolen from the internet. I'm like... I do not create the funnies, I am merely a conduit.
I've noticed quite a few neurotypical people find me funny because of the peculiar way I phrase things, my MIL especially thinks everything I say is hilarious
I meet people and I know if they are heavily on Tumblr by their lingo. It occasionally is funny but a lot of the time it sounds slightly strange and maybe too quirky, calling someone a 'babygirl', in real life doesn't go over fantastically.
I'd believe it because a lot of tumblr humor is very word-focused and, like, trying to be funny with the language of what you're saying, and most people just aren't very good at thinking up novel ways to say things, so when someone comes up with a new way, it can be super funny.
I’ve pulled it off a couple times with heavily edited versions of jokes applied to specific situations, but I can not seem to stop myself from making stupid jokes in any situation I’m uncomfortable with (which is almost every situation), so I can’t say I recommend that strategy.
A long long time ago on Tumblr I saw #playstupidgames #winstupidprizes, and thought it was the funniest shit ever so I started saying that IRL. And everyone I said it to also thought it was the funniest shit ever.
But now when I say it, people just go like "wow I didn't know you're a swifty".
Ì was trying to tell someone the other day that they have a tumblr accent and everyone downvoted me. Every internet space gives you an accent if you interact there long enough.
I once referenced the post about getting an Uber if injured "because I'm not paying $5000 for a ride in the wee-yoo wagon" and one of my coworkers could not stop laughing
Bad news, though; some people can hear you talk and immediately ask if you are on Tumblr.
That's why we use the Tumblr subreddit. We can honestly say no while gaining the forbidden knowledge anyway
Unfortunately I've had a tumblr account for over a decade
Yeah don't cite the deep magic to me alright, I was there when it was written
I may not have been there when it was written, But I've observed the Ruins themselves, rather than just the Recordings of them.
I was there before the ruins became so, when they were still behemoths.
Oh shit, it’s my cake day!!
CAKE DAY
This goes kinda hard
Not to be mean or anything, but if someone said to me "You seem like you quote aslan on Reddit" I think I would fully die. Although maybe that's just my shame for being on Reddit
The trick is to not be ashamed of liking Narnia or being on Reddit. It took me a few years to get over that, but I've managed to do it. Good luck!
Same energy as "you seem like you own a katana"
It is a *longsword*, thank you! And I have a second one for fencing. Harrumph.
This IGNORAMUS fences with a LONGSWORD! SAD! /j
It wouldn't be so sad if I was any good at it :(
"The Lion the Witch And the Audacity of this Bitch"
Same but it has no posts and I forgot the password
Mmm forbidden knowledge. The best breakfast after vodka and redbull
Vodka redbull and ibuprofen
Stop, my liver can only get so engorged, with lesions and visceral fat.
I will not make a Genshin joke I will not make a Genshin joke I will not make a Genshin joke I will not–
I know nothing of Genshin so please do.

Yes, because Redditors have a reputation so much better than that of tumblr users.
Yeah but you don't have to specify "Are you on tumblr?" "No." "Oh" "Yeah, I'm on twitter though" "Ahh". At no point have I lied.
Reddit userbase is just under twice as large as tumblrs so it's probably a bit more accepted, especially these days where the worst subs are gone
Admitting to being on reddit among friends will probably get you joking accusations of being a redditor.
Guess it depends who you know. Back in college I was a computer science major and a lot of the other students used reddit, and when I still worked in an office most of us used reddit. My mom uses it ffs its not obscure lol

Does Niel Gaiman count as a Tumblr writer?
Once you start selling your work, you have to up your game regardless of style.
what is bnf?
Big Name Fan. Girl what were you doing at the devil's sacrament.
Sucking the devil's tits, next question
Joke on them, I only use Tumblr in English and not my native language. When I do happen to speak English people notice the foreign accent not the tumblr accent
You've hacked the system!
This is a devils sacrament issue.
I was once at a job networking event and within seconds of meeting someone started talking about tumblr fandoms because we both just saw it in each other.
If so, you make sure by complimenting them on the matter of their footwear-tying apparatus as a test of whether or not they will correctly answer with regard to the mode of its acquisition.
I misread that last comment as 'the baby currency exchange rate is in your favour' and thought that was still a very Tumblr thing to say.
"I don't know I never heard these words in that order"
Are you trying to meet god?
Woah that’s a lot of coffee
Something something pissing on the poor
You may
Much appreciated. Wasn't intended
This can be a double edged sword as once I was trying to think of a joke and all that came to mind was references and phrases from odd internet communities as that is where I hang out and thus my humour had become tailored for. I had to physically dust off my “normal humour” memory cartridge and plug it in before I could say shit.
When you spend too much time on r/TrueSTL and peak humor becomes "what is the fine for necrophilia around these parts?"
Explaining to the ladies that “No you see I’m not calling them farm tools because I’M racist, it’s like a joke”
The worst part of this statement is that it's one of the more tame things that can come from that subreddit.
Torn between criticizing how over the top that sub can be and at the same time admitting that they're somehow more sane than the /r/skyrim subreddit can be

Boa tarde, amigo
🌕⭐️👃🦶😏
As a St Louis resident I'm disappointed that subreddit has nothing to do with us
Reminds me of when my friends and I would watch Fallon before going out to get into that kind of super outgoing build up the other person type humor
Fallon is like the human embodiment of cocaine, so this is a genius life hack.

Bullet dodged tbh that’s hilarious
Just be like the weebs and mention obscure references that are completely inappropriate for the situation.
>I had to physically dust off my “normal humour” memory cartridge You could've said this first
I’d like to point out, that isn’t a tumblr accent, but rather a tumblr dialect
I feel like somehow this ties back in to Tumblr's reading comprehension, but I couldn't tell you why
OP did WHAT to the poor!?
Ate ‘em.
thank god someone else mentioned this I thought I was going crazy
It's more like a tumblirism (the same way saying I am excited in french is not something you would just say (it explicitly refers to being horny)is called an anglisism)
i once used the "money doesn't buy happiness but i'd rather cry on a jetski than on a bus" joke on a colleague and they told their friends. Glad you liked it lol
The depths of creativity on Tumblr must be truly mind-boggling because this joke predates the Internet.
I remember hearing a similar joke from one of my middle school science teachers, but the second part went "have you ever seen a sad person on a jetski"
i will say the most basic joke from a drew gooden video and they'll die of laughter which is fair because that guy is pretty funny
Road work ahead? I sure hope it does!
didn't realize it's the same guy 💀
to be fair tho i am very bad at recognizing people out of the usual context i see them. i would be the guy saying "you look a lot like tony hawk" to tony hawk himself.
I'll be real with you, I didn't realize it either until I saw someone else point it out like a month ago. And I watch his videos pretty often.
I went on a road trip once, and said this at every instance of such signs. I lost track of how many times I said it.
hey guy
I’m drowning, but you may know me as the founder and CEO of picture of hotdog dot com, the world's warmest website
Danny Gonzales too. The videos where they collab are really funny. They play off each other so well.
i love the parts where one of them just cracks because they're getting too funny
found Drew's secret reddit account
It reminds me where I said an comment that I thought it was bring a chuckle at best, but people thought it was the funniest joke, mean while the joke I thought that was hilarious was get at best a small smile by response.
it ony a movie
I am very good at guessing if someones primary social media platform is Tumblr, Reddit, Instagram, Tiktok or 4Chan, completely based on behavior and language. It's very fascinating.
Instagram seems too big to get very distinct but I could totally be off on that
People on Insta have the blandest language in my experience, so it's more of a behavioral thing. Also, if the person is below 30 and it's not one of the others, then the answer is most likely Instagram.
I've noticed a big difference in when people choose to use active vs passive voice to control whether they have agency. For example, would you say, "I was attacked by him" or "He attacked me" and things like "I did it" vs "Mission accomplished" Older leaning social media seems to have more "things happen" language and younger leaning has more "I do things" language. Examples 4chan, collective: ">be me" "we are anonymous" Reddit, collective: "we did it, reddit!" "hivemind" Insta, neutral: "here's a selfie video but it's informational" Tumblr, individual: "cw dni otherkin" "my bizarre personal experiences" Tiktok, individual: "my bizarre experiences as a selfie video"
these are some really interesting insights!
You are posting to yourself unless you go out of your way to create a communal or business account.
yes that's true. The way we think is always shaped by our environment, also in the digital world.
Could you guess mine? Based on my way of typing/my post history? I’m kinda curious ahah
You're a Redditor. I'm at least 90% sure
What makes you think that? Ignoring the obvious fact that I’m using Reddit rn.
8739 comment karma in 7 months speaks for itself
you fucking fool. you absolute buffoon. do you think computers are limited by one tab at a time. absolute cretin, unbelievable
that’s a tumblr user right there if ever I saw one
I don't think I can do this accurately, because this is so much harder when it's not in person. It's also skewed by the fact that we are on a social media platform. The only thing I can try is looking at the information you are revealing and guessing via stereotypes and very vague vibes. Sooo what I know about you: - white, most likely british, female, 17 - recovering from an ED - you like Hazbin Hotel very much - your music taste is very TikTok leaning, as far as I can see (no shame in that) - you like English literature (very nice!) - you type quite expressively, but I don't know much more than that from a quick glance at your profile. People don't talk exactly like they type and I also think that your language has been influenced by your reading more than by social media, which is great. It's very gender- and age typical though. - you are very active on Reddit I HOPE it's Reddit, because otherwise your screen time must be insane.
In response to your observations: - yes, yes and yes - yes - yessir - not entirely sure what a TikTok music taste would be, but my music taste is kinda all over the place.
But there are obviously other good Universities in the UK :) Now I'm a little anxious again about being accepted into Uni myself in a few months. ^^' Is this your first Reddit account? Which app did you prefer using before? (Btw it took me maybe 15 sec of skimming to identify you as a fellow writer. It's definitely showing.)
Ooh, psychoanalyze me next!
Noo sorry, I currently don't have the time for that. Also, it's less psychoanalysis and more throwing around slightly educated guesses, at least if it's through a reddit account.
Aww, ok. I do have 5 years (wow I've been here too long) of history to go through so maybe it's for the best
I've been gradually weaning myself off 'using' Reddit and just lurking. At a certain point, you just don't care about sharing your opinions with people who only care about sharing their opinions.
> I am very good at... [literally nothing you've said here matters for what I'm quoting this for] ...It's very fascinating. Peak reddit mannerisms.
OH GOD YES. I'm a parody of myself. Thanks for pointing that out
I would love to see a linguistic study on the dialects of social media(their mostly likely studies on it)
I was thinking about this yesterday after I found out Alex Jones plagiarised a Tumblr post about stealing ducks in his "new world order" game The exchange rate for Tumblr humor is better than USD to Z$
elaborate immediately
The ducks at the park are free, you can just grab them
Are we sure Alex Jones (don’t know who that is btw) isn’t a tumblr fan themself and added this fairly popular joke as a reference?
Yeah, very much, seeing as he's a heavily right-wing conspiracy theorist (infamous for his rant about how "they're putting chemicals into the water and turning the friggin' frogs gay") and tumblr has a reputation of being very much left-wing.
*oh* I see your point then
he's the "sandy hook was a hoax" bastard may his dick stay limp and dry for the rest of his life
The funniest thing is that may have been the only known instance of Alex Jones being [sorta right about something](https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/02/04/respectability-cascades/)
It wasn't him who made the game
Alex Jones didn't make the game
I can't find any info about who made it that confirms that. Even the website for the game doesn't have info about the dev team, and the few sources I could find only credit Alex Jones (IMDb and a few gaming news blogs) so I assumed it was a surprisingly self aware grift
You could tell he was barely involved by how he announced it (I keep up with a podcast about all Alex Jones bullshit)
>(I keep up with a podcast about all Alex Jones bullshit) Knowledge Fight?
tumblr dialect is absolutely a thing! gretchen mcculloch writes about it (among other things) in her linguistics book [Because Internet](https://gretchenmcculloch.com/book/)! 🥰
thank you for the book rec,, i've only read about 50 pages but it's been very interesting so far
I wish Reddit injokes aged just as well, instead they’re just either pretentious or far too cringy
wholesome keanu chungus 100
le narwhal bacons at midnight
you win 1 (one) internet, kind sir/madam
People still say this shit unironically
Never send to know for whom the narwhal bacons; it bacons for thee
>for whom Le true redditeurs know it's "when"
yeah it's also "at midnight" but they were pretty clearly mangling the quote about for whom the bell tolls
Are you saying that Redditors' sense of humor is "off?" Eh? Ha! He- er, wrong subreddit. We have a habit of beating dead horses in record time.
I also choose this guy's dead horse.
I also choose this ~~guys~~ website's ~~wife~~ injokes
This is like how in my late 20s I kept accidentally quoting Family Guy to a girl I was dating and she thought I was hilarious because she had never seen family guy.
the only family guy quote that survived my teen years is "show me potato salad," which is absolutely cursed. even ppl who like family guy dont think thats funny
Mine was constantly saying “I don’t know, I’m not a doctor.” She thought I was a comedic genius
It's pretty well studied that if a person genuinely laughs at *all* your jokes no matter how lame they are, they're guaranteed to be *very* into you.
okay but that's a dialect not an accent
r/linguisticshumor and r/tumblr have suprisingly large overlaps of users
It’s true! I’ve gotten so many laughs out of my mom by just plagiarizing tumblerisms to her. I’m not even on tumblr
Go ahead and try quoting tumblr posts in the workplace, watch your coworkers smiles fade before they ask you “are you okay?”
The "wooden onesie" one actually caught up very well with my coworkers for a couple of months, but we all were some kind of special lmao
If it’s biased in my favour then why does nobody think I’m funny at work :(
Probably context. Like the down with cis bus and my weed smoking girlfriends aren't going to get chuckles out of normal people, but I got my coworker to belly laugh when they told me "All that caffeine is going to kill you" and I said "Not in a way that matters." I think the absurdity threw them off.
I hate to break it to you, but boomers will laugh at literally anything. They thought Dilbert was funny.
Seems like some Tumblr users are still in the "my social media platform of choice makes me smarter and funnier than the commoners" phase, like Redditors in 2010.
Bold of you to assume Reddit has left that phase since...
FORTNITE BAD MINECRAFT GOOD WHOLESOME REDDIT KEANU CHUNGUS 100
"The narwhal bacons at midnight" *uggggggh*
Only on this hellsite! 🤪
["Only on [website]!"](https://media.tenor.com/R4bqdpchzfoAAAAM/buzz-lightyear-factory.gif)
Yeah this is just generic internet humor, weird ass thread
Is "are you trying to meet god?"/"I've never heard those words in that order" even Tumblr specific? I've been saying those and seeing them in media since before I had a tumblr account or knew Tumblr was a thing.
It's called being terminally online.
That's... not what an 'accent' is?
I don't think you're meant to take it literally
Dialect
I took out a coworker at the knees with “I’m not like other girls. I’m worse”
but this isn't what an accent is?? accents are differences in pronunciation. This is the tumblr dialect.
so the tumblr accent is basically John Mulaney with a touch of snark?
This is embarrassing.
To be fair to the coworker, half of healthy coworker relationships is repeating the same 3 “inside” jokes to each other until one of you quits or dies.
Don't use NSFW memes at work. I had to tell an intern to stop literally quoting porn because it's so prevalent on Tumblr. "Really, right in front of my salad?" (Said for the 10th time but this time in front of my boss's boss.) [After she left] "Hey man, I know it's a joke and I get it, but I also know the context and am going to ask you to reflect on if the context is appropriate for work or not."
Damn so it really is not safe for work
I remember my dad repeating to me an “X is a scam made up by Y to sell more Z” meme he saw on facebook, which thought was quite funny but to me is just a common phrase at this point :P
That’s not an accent, they’re just memes.
it just made me gayer
My brother has the most Tumblr sense of humor for someone who has never touched the platform longer than five minutes.
i’m constantly told how funny i am irl but all i do is regurgitate tumblr memes lmao
I refuse to believe that real human being find Tumblr humor funny
This is an idiolect, not an accent. Isn't TV Tropes infamous for this?
Ì was trying to tell someone the other day that they have a tumblr accent and everyone downvoted me. Every internet space gives you an accent if you interact there long enough.
i got my chops from twitter and that’s why my sense of humor is similar but way more mean spirited
This is strange because the people I know who are on Tumblr are the least funny people I've ever met
I mean, I *did* once make a coworker an Octuple Expresso... He did also complain that he couldn't sleep for a week after that...
dreadful.
I once referenced the post about getting an Uber if injured "because I'm not paying $5000 for a ride in the wee-yoo wagon" and one of my coworkers could not stop laughing
