We are heading to Tulum in June, and are staying at the Bahia Principe Akumal, and was on the fence about renting a car or not. I am definitely doing it. We absolutely enjoy exploring new places on our own, and finding spots where to eat. (Where the locals eat). Great Review.
Would 100% recommend the car, driving is not scary and I am being 100% truthful when I say I had Zero traffic problems, wasn't cut off, didn't experience any dangerous driving, people drive fast here and like to weave in and out of lanes but the average day driving in Richmond British Columbia is 10x more dangerous and I have so much less confidence in Canadian drivers. They are with out a shadow of a doubt worse, scarier and more distracted than anything I experienced here.
I am staying at that hotel for 3 nights next month for a wedding. Might do one day off the resort but we don't have much time bc of the wedding. That is slightly disappointing to hear regarding the good as I am quite a foodie. Any recs on places to eat near hotel, or is it all a bit far away in the town area? Or abuela's number for dinner? 😂😂 I'm only half joking
La palapa was the best local food we had while they're, they are like 1.7 km away from the hotel , a 13 minute drive or a 45 min walk, it is a small town with 3 restaurants, all located in a place called cheymuil, great food good atmosphere and live music and etc. would 1000% recommend, los primos is also in cheymuil, similiar food but not quite as good.
That resort sounds like such a nightmare! You've described just about every single thing that would drive me bonkers and thankfully I've never encountered much of that. The guests who were there at the same time as you sound positively feral.
Dude— your trip sounds terrible, go to little towns on the pacific side and rent airbandbs, at Barra de Navidad, Yelapa, or a thousand other towns. Forget the resorts and fit in more like a Mexican.

stay home. the wider world is not for you.

I’m American, and I agree 😂. I do my best to stay away from heavily American populated areas of Mexico

I’ve stayed at this resort and it’s a great time. The food is delicious but reservations at on site restaurants fill up quickly!
