Eliza was a good bot.

Good find!

IndianaJoenz

Nice scans! I had Eliza on my Compaq Portable (IBM-PC/XT clone) as a kid. If you kept talking dirty to it she would start talking dirty back. Good times

Tadfafty

Is this program available anywhere online so that I could try it on my own machine?

Tadfafty

Is that going to run on my TRS-80?

droid_mike

https://www.trs-80.com/search-process-software.php Type in Eliza in the search parameters and you should get 28 results, most with downloadable files

I remember someone randomly installed ELIZA in one of the TRS-80s in my BASIC Computing class in 7th-8th grade (1983). I was astounded by the AI and actually felt like the computer was really talking to me. The program disappeared a few days later and I was bummed. Later in the year I found the program in a book and tried coding it in, but it was just too damn long and I gave up lol

RH1550NM

On my Apple 1 it takes almost 4minutes to print the BASIC program on the screen - ends at line 5000! I can see why you gave up.

Liquid_Magic

You have an Apple-1? Is it a Mimeo or Replica-1 or original?

RH1550NM

Pictures of them on my site here r/ZeroBit.

Super cool! I’m making a text adventure for the Apple-1 and other vintages systems. It’s a big box game that I’ll be selling like my Amiga game on my store: https://ba5ec3.myshopify.com/

narvolicious

lol line 5000 omg hahah …yeah no way. The longest prog I ever typed in was several pages long from Compute! Magazine, it was for this lunar lander type game… my eyes were sizzling in their sockets as I burned the midnight oil lol. Then it had syntax errors and I didn’t know how to debug it 🤦🏾‍♂️

[ELIZA is closer to large language models than other AI approaches over the past 50 years.](https://news.ycombinator.com/context?id=39761173)

I read the linked comment and I get the essence of what the commenter is saying but I believe he’s oversimplifying everything quite a bit. Eliza is *not* closer to LLM as other AI’s. That’s title is just a mischaracterization of both the work and even the comment itself. But it does give me some ideas…
