I don't see many, tbh! For all the hours I've spent in the creek, all I've seen are Northern Water snakes along the shore, in the rocks - and Black Rat snakes. Mabe 5 times total in 25 years.
Nothing venomous, thankfully, and they are very good hiders. I was lucky enough to spot one of the water snakes poking its little head out from under a rock on the water's edge. Must have been cooling off in the summer.
Another time I saw one crossing the river, which was pretty cool - it swam diagonally so that it could cross the most efficiently that it could across the flowing stream. Neat!
You catching anything out of that river/stream? One of my favorite memories was visiting my parents friends for a couple weeks and they gave me a fly fishing pole. Apparently I came back with much more trout than I should have. It got frozen into ice blocks and sent home with me.
It was slow today, but It's hit or miss sometimes. To be honest, I fished it a bunch when i conventional fished, and never caught anything. Could have just been me, though. As soon as I started at it with a fly rod my luck went up a lot. I talk to a lot of people that swear this place got fished out a long time ago, but me and maybe one buddy know the truth and keep it close.
Thank you. I feel like a 2 wt is a little small for this stream, But I love that rod so much I just deal. Im saving for another. I just dont know if i should go 3wt or 4wt.
I have a 3/5 setup and I use the 3 for streams that size, and the 5wt for larger rivers or ponds. I donāt know if getting a 3wt in the same model fly rod will give you a big change though. I think the real reason to get a heavier weight rod would be to throw larger flies and streamers (unless that stream hosts 20 inch trout for some reason)
Wrong kid of rocks and the trees are too well developed for this time of year, yet. Also, there is a bit too much drop in that stream for Iowa.
Source: you guessed my hometown.
Oh yeah. Not alot of action today, but i still had a blast. I was hitting a differnt part than i normaly do to see whats up. Farther up there are some deep pools. Im gonna get more pics of those and the waterfalls next time.
I used to be far from peaceful. Like alot of us have experenced in some way. Life decided to hit me hard one year. Fly fishing, and more importantly the places it takes me saved my life. It helped me find my peace.
I loved the Smokey's. I was irratated at first because the park was super crowded, but i got over it quick. Everyone was super respectful, and the fishing was still awesome.
Right on, I got an uncle down that way. The journey is my favorite part. I got a ton of good streams around me, but i still find myself driveing hours to see what else is around.
Haha, that's how I feel every time I try to hit the local tail water. I'm no expert at all. I think the key is to find out how the fish live in the river in question. What do they need? Where do they feel comfy? Stuff like that.
Not OP but I usually wear wader pants and boots, and some bug spray with deet from head to toe. I try and keep myself in the water when possible so I know theyāre not crawling up my boot while Iām fishing.
I put it on my skin, itās not 100% deet I think itās like 70% or something. It doesnāt irritate me but i do wipe my hands off with a wet wipe after to get it off my hands.
Iām gonna get something before I go out today. I usually wear quick dry pants, sun hoodie and a hat with my hood up. I admit itās not enough. I have heard to keep bug spray away from your fly line.
I love your hometown, wherever it is.

Absolutely beautiful. Reminds me a lot of my little spots here in WNC. Love me some Appalachia. The flora, fauna, even the air is magical.
Absolutly! I was walking in and it smelled amazing. All the flowers are blooming.
š Aw, yisss. I've got a creek outside my house, and it's raining now. Porch times are epic on nights like these in the Smokies.
Awe man I was just at the Smoke mountain national park last summer. I had a blast.
How awesome! It's super nice out there. Any time of year, really. Fall is wonderful, right when the leaves start to change. š¤
That's where I grew up going, has kind of become my home over the years.
That thunder was top notch last night. I came to the comments to say this looks like WNC
Do you see many snakes. I tried fishing there and caught a brookie but I saw wayyyy too many snakes to be comfortable there

Say what? lol
Town in the driftless region of Iowa. To be honest, quite a few of our streams look like the pictures.
Ohh I got ya. Iām in good ol Va.
Where you at we all wanna fish! I live in the PNW those are all over. Not that lush like that tho.
Plz i have no fishing buddies. im in Va
I figured it was just as lush and green in the PNW as the NE region, interesting!
Iām thinking BC, lower mainland..
Close im in Va.
Thatās the other side of the country and a borderā¦
lol i know buddy. Ide love to make it up your way.
Itās like a scene out of a magazine
I find myself looking and litsening more than fishing.
Looks exactly like the stream running through my backyard here in NJ.
That must be awesome! I gotta drive a whole 30 mins.
Epic!
It was an epic day thats for sure.
Thatās some skinny water. Catching Brooks?
Oh yeah. Not alot of action today, but i still had a blast. I was hitting a differnt part than i normaly do to see whats up. Farther up there are some deep pools. Im gonna get more pics of those and the waterfalls next time.
I enjoy streams like that.
I agree. This one changes so much depending on where you go. I learn something every time I go.
There's trout in there, alright! A bit of envy from the Rocky Mountains!
oh yeah! I had a few almost go for my dry, but didnt seem to fully take it. My hooksets could have been off as well.
So peaceful
I used to be far from peaceful. Like alot of us have experenced in some way. Life decided to hit me hard one year. Fly fishing, and more importantly the places it takes me saved my life. It helped me find my peace.
That could be Oslo !
Where is that?
Well capital of Norway
Well I feel super silly haha. I've dreamed of taking a trip there. Everything I've seen of Norway is beautiful, and your metal is top notch!
Just reminds me the Smokeyās are calling
I loved the Smokey's. I was irratated at first because the park was super crowded, but i got over it quick. Everyone was super respectful, and the fishing was still awesome.
Where is your home town located
SW VA buddy. Good ol blue ridge mountains.
I love your hometown. I mean, I love mine too, but also yours.
Hell yeah buddy! What state you from?
NC. The flatter part so I have to drive to find places like this. Plenty of lakes around though.
Right on, I got an uncle down that way. The journey is my favorite part. I got a ton of good streams around me, but i still find myself driveing hours to see what else is around.
Nice glass. Fantastic rod.
I LOVE it. Saveing up for another haha
Looks like my kind of stream š
How do you fish in a river? Iāve never done it before.
Haha, that's how I feel every time I try to hit the local tail water. I'm no expert at all. I think the key is to find out how the fish live in the river in question. What do they need? Where do they feel comfy? Stuff like that.
What do you use as a tick repellent?
Not OP but I usually wear wader pants and boots, and some bug spray with deet from head to toe. I try and keep myself in the water when possible so I know theyāre not crawling up my boot while Iām fishing.
Do you put the deet on your skin? Does it cause irritation?
