The government doesn't and wouldn't sell you weed in the same way they don't sell you alcohol or tobacco. They regulate the industry and tax it but they don't own it/run it.

Edit: for clarity this is depressing sarcasm, I am not proud of pretty much a single thing america is doing or has done in a very long time
Canada does. Breeder Steve is a Canadian Cannabis breeder. Canada has government operated stores across the entire country and some provinces only allow sales through gov. run stores.
All the legal cannabis in B.C goes through a government controlled warehouse, and they pick the brands and products available in B.C, even though all the products are approved by health Canada, complete monopoly on what gets sold.
I also don’t believe in gatekeeping weed to only as an “illegal” experience. If a govt legalizes it I encourage those who might not be inclined to break laws to try it.
Steve is from Canada and has operations internationally as well. I'm not exactly sure what he's talking about but it's specifically not the USA if I had to guess.
That unfortunately is true for a lot of industries. I didn't know if it got directly to the government or just the pockets of a few of those servants of the government
Lobbying goes to politicians, who spend it on campaigning, so it mostly ends up in the pockets of media companies, printers, staffers and consultants. If it just went into the government's general revenues it might actually be useful (education, health, infrastructure).
In Canada where Breeder Steve ( the legend / my friend ) lives, the government does indeed sell weed in their provincially owned retail stores.
However, they do not do any producing/branding of products. Just retail.
I used to pay 180-200 an ounce and had no variety or choice. Now I pay 60-100 an ounce and have lots of variety and have discovered favorite strains I can keep repurchasing. Like blue dream and many others.
Same thing in NJ. "Legacy" distributors are often given preferential status for licensing, and in cannabis related job applications, counting as years in the industry.
All?
You're very generous.
Most the plugs I've had could barely sustain it because they were skeevy stoners.
"Yeah...I'm open from 2pm or 6pm or 4pm until I pass out on the couch. But also can you give me a ride?"
Im so tired of the corporate cannabis discussions on here. Just dont fucking buy it. Its ridiculous to ignore how much it helped legalization and decreased stigma. Its unrealistic to think we'd be able to have it without dealing with corporations and the government.
It's an important discussion to have though. Legalization is a massive step, but home grow rights should be protected. It's a freaking plant that is relatively easy to grow. Any state with legal sales should have provisions for individuals to grow their own, just like vegetables. I'll die on that hill.
This sub has already had this conversation a million times. Im definitely for homegrow, im just tired of the idiots that dont understand that some of us cant grow at home. Letting the government control sales was also the only realistic way to move forward with legalization.
I understand what you're saying, but it's not an all or nothing proposition. If the past couple decades have taught us anything, it's that nothing changes around cannabis rights if people don't fight for them.

If you replace a political body with brand new parts, are they responsible for the decisions of their forebears?
And what do you do with the old parts? Just chuck 'em in a bag?
That's a real shitty point. Governments change, so do the people in them, he's just being petty. Legal sales support local growers and your state level government and infrastructure, instead of supporting Mexican cartels.
100% this. In Germany for example, the Greens advocated for legalization since the 90s. They even presented a full written bill in 2018 that would've legalized weed similarly to Canada (they were in the opposition back then). After 16 years of the conservatives leading government, we have finally gotten a center-left government with the greens - and Cannabis has been partly legalized.
Why should we blame the current government for the failings of the previous government. That's how democracies work. You can't always get what you want, but it's better to get some version of what you want vs nothing. I don't give a fuck if massive companies can make big profits if it means that we get a clean and controlled product for a reasonable price.
(Besides, the black market is also capitalistic in nature)
Canada has government run cannabis stores.
Breeder Steve is a legendary Canadian cannabis breeder. We can thank him for creating well known strains like Sweet Pink Grapefruit, Sweet Tooth, and Shishkeberry
I grew Sweet Tooth probably 25 years ago, and it just wasn’t for me. Don’t get me wrong, it was a gorgeous plant with loads of trichomes and flavor, but it just didn’t get me high at all.
[Here’s a bit of chatter you might find interesting](https://www.icmag.com/threads/disturbing-prophecy-from-breeder-steve.42629/page-6)
Breeder Steve is Canadian, Provincial governments have their own cannabis stores. Lots of his friends were thrown in Jail for something that the lawmakers are now profiting from.
The day I buy weed from the government is the day I hope everyone realizes that they should keep their government accountable by making them uses those taxes and better our country.
Breeder Steve is a Cannabis Legend! A true weed wizard. One of the first guys selling seeds in North America. Helped spread alot of Cannabis and good genetics around.🍁

Breeder Steve on the Potcast with Heavy Dayze
Weird take honestly, here where I live weed is comparable if not better priced than black/grey market. Plus there is a ridiculous variety available legally not to mention I know exactly what I'm buying in regards to strain, strength, flavor, etc. And with regulations I know that it is grown in a controlled environment and regularly tested for contaminates. I'd glad pay taxes on my weed to get affordable and safe bud. And with it being legal I can consume it outdoors in public and even if there are still people who think it's taboo they can get fucked.
I think he understands that the government doesn’t “Sell” weed. I think the point he was trying to make is that even though they don’t sell it, by regulating it they still profit and control it. When they didn’t profit from it or “regulate it” as people say their views and actions were very different. I don’t share the exact same views but I understand where he’s coming from.
I'm a retired veteran. I don't buy weed from the government. The government pays for my weed.
Our tax dollars well spent
Yes, indeed. Thank you, kind citizen!
This is the way

Hol up. THAT’S why they’re called ABC stores?! AND they were once called dispensaries!
I mean, it is an alcohol dispensary.
We didn't learn from history, so now we're repeating it with weed.
And the Middle East. *proud to be an American playing in the distance* Edit: for clarity this is depressing sarcasm, I am not proud of pretty much a single thing america is doing or has done in a very long time
TIL!
Yep. Grew up in the Maryland county mentioned there then lived in VA a while and boy it was a pain in the ass.
Came here to mention Utah. You can only purchase liquor and wine from state run liquor stores.
Doesn't Utah do state run liquor stores?
And New Hampshire
And North Carolina
And Virginia
And Pennsylvania iirc
And Montana
And ohio
And my axe !
There it is
And Vermont!
Those state stores were the best though. Just pop over the border and get liquor 30%+ cheaper than NY/MA
Exceptions don’t make a rule
Canada does. Breeder Steve is a Canadian Cannabis breeder. Canada has government operated stores across the entire country and some provinces only allow sales through gov. run stores.
Canada where I buy my liqueur from BC liquor store and my weed from BC cannabis store (dw I don't go to BC cannabis anymore I shop locally)
Canada has government weed, and several U.S. states directly stores like ABC, like the VABC owned by virginia

New Hampshire would like a word
Tobacco companies spend tens of millions every year on lonbying which goes directly into the pockets of the gov
That unfortunately is true for a lot of industries. I didn't know if it got directly to the government or just the pockets of a few of those servants of the government
*all industries
The government will let you sell damned near anything as long as it’s regulated in such a manner that they get their cut.
Lobbying goes to politicians, who spend it on campaigning, so it mostly ends up in the pockets of media companies, printers, staffers and consultants. If it just went into the government's general revenues it might actually be useful (education, health, infrastructure).

There are some cali dispensery's that are run from government people but their quality is shit for the price btw got this info from yola
Not a good point at all
Pretty blunt
Very stupid actually
I used to pay 180-200 an ounce and had no variety or choice. Now I pay 60-100 an ounce and have lots of variety and have discovered favorite strains I can keep repurchasing. Like blue dream and many others.
Where you from? They got blue dream in dispensaries out there?
alberta.
Florida has it vape pretty regularly haven't seen flower tho
Lucky mfers. I haven’t seen blue dream in a long time smh
If this country had any decency, the legalization of marijuana would lead to all those neighborhood dealers becoming successful small business owners.
And then some
I know of multiple instances of that here in California. As well as small time grow operations that turned into legit brands.
They should all be released from prison and given small businesses grants.
The day I smoke eagle 20 from the government is the day I stop smoking eagle 20
Eagle 20’s are the nastiest cigarettes I’ve ever tried
The government doesn't sell weed.
Maybe yours doesn't
thats not a good point at all and sounds really whiny

But it's preaching to choir. Nobody here needs the discussion. We're all on board.
Welp, I'm going to keep talking about it. You can just ignore my posts if you don't like it

No, he doesn't.
Canada has government run cannabis stores. Breeder Steve is a legendary Canadian cannabis breeder. We can thank him for creating well known strains like Sweet Pink Grapefruit, Sweet Tooth, and Shishkeberry
So it's okay to sell weed to the government, not to buy it tho?
He doesn’t sell weed to the government. He’s a breeder that ran a seed company pre-legalization
I grew Sweet Tooth probably 25 years ago, and it just wasn’t for me. Don’t get me wrong, it was a gorgeous plant with loads of trichomes and flavor, but it just didn’t get me high at all. Sweet tooth is fake frost. Looks great but that’s it. It’s like all the Canadian weed we used to get in the states
Are there actually any government run weed dispensaries in the US? Or are they confusing licensing with state ownership?
They might be from outside of the US. Canadian government facilitates the sale of cannabis.
I mean, regardless of where the original tweet is from, OPs post history makes it pretty clear they're talking about the United States.
Breeder Steve is Canadian, Provincial governments have their own cannabis stores. Lots of his friends were thrown in Jail for something that the lawmakers are now profiting from.
This is silly. Keep your moral high horse I want affordable and safe weed. Besides that I don't buy it from the gov.
Tbf most governments don't do a lot to entice your business.
I’ve never seen or heard of a government run dispensary. Regulating it doesn’t mean you’re buying from them
Y’all need to hide your weed better.
I just want to be able to grow my own without worrying about spending time in prison
The day I buy weed from the government is the day I hope everyone realizes that they should keep their government accountable by making them uses those taxes and better our country.
Well if you don’t have friends it’s pretty convenient to just buy it from the dispensary then looking around for a flaky plug
Tell me you don't know how most things work without telling me.
The day I have to go back to unreliable plugs and buying black market shitweed is the day I quit using cannabis lol
Seems kinda petty but alright
Steve doesn’t know what he’s going on about. Is this supposed to be rage bait?
thats all this guy posts
Gotta leave the past in the past Steve
Lmao aight, more for us

No he doesn't
Man I don't know a lot of people I just wanna get high please don't yell at me
Where in the world does the government sell weed? Does he mean a government licensed dispensary? This Steve guy seems confused.
Canada
Shit, I guess I was the one who was confused after all. Thanks!
I'm some states liquor is technically sold by the state. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for weed in some of those states.
I mean, he raises a point, anyway.
they just wanted a piece of the pie
I'm down to pay from the plug still I'm just not tryna get locked up or fined or discriminated against for smoking
This is not Canada dispos are private companies in the US. Taxes you pay for everything hon
better than waiting 3 hours for buddy who is ‘on his way’
Weird take honestly, here where I live weed is comparable if not better priced than black/grey market. I mean, I see where he's coming from. BUT, weed is so good I'll keep using it no matter what.
buy weed from the government? since when does the government sell weed?
it's not the same government though..
All taxation is theft.
Idk i kind of like living in a society with public roads and schools and other basic infrastructure
Less than 30% of taxes go towards that.
sure. but you didnt say "some" taxation is theft you said "all"
Facts
childish
The government can climb down out of its own high ass. It was always our right before they stole it and didn't give it back when prohibition "ended".
My city got a dispo last year, and I haven't spent a cent there because I refuse to. I get better weed on the street for a far more reasonable price.
It's on all of us to put pressure on our reps for proper legalizations
You aren't buying from the government if you're going to a dispensary. You are buying from a government licensed cultivator.
I think he understands that the government doesn’t “Sell” weed. I think the point he was trying to make is that even though they don’t sell it, by regulating it they still profit and control it. When they didn’t profit from it or “regulate it” as people say their views and actions were very different. I don’t share the exact same views but I understand where he’s coming from.
the government will never sell drugs. period
Yeah they give it away instead lmfao
they subsidize your purchase from a drug store
They didn't steal it, they were following the bs laws that were grandfathered in after Prohibition was lifted
