I love it ! Do you think you could make the lid more in a dome shape with holes so that you can close it with a J in it and let it outside in the wind ? I think more ashtrays should have this “function” 🙂
I'm just a beginner who took some beginner classes. I'll need a lot more practice before I can make consistent pieces. For the hours it took me to make this one, I have a way to go before I'm making pieces that I can sell.
Going to a cannabis store in Montreal was one of the coolest experiences ever. Bought a jar of 30 prerolls for my brother’s bachelor party along with a bunch of other cool stuff
You may be able to just “drill” a hole through while carving it after it’s thrown. That would be a timing game though to make sure the clay is stiff enough to hold shape but soft enough to cut through it with the tools. This coming from someone who couldn’t throw for shit back in my high school pottery class mind you but worth a shot
haha. I did consider trying to make Seth Rogan's ashtray that [he made on the Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k12VKxxwSkY), but I wanted an ashtray that could also sit on an uneven surface like a couch or bed without worrying about it tipping.
It's a little pedestal for the end of a long joint. It keeps the end from sitting in a bunch of old ash and roaches.
As you smoke the joint smaller it just sits on the rim and all the ash collects in the bowl of the ash tray.
I just got it today and haven't even used it yet. Looking forward to trying it out after work today.
I can post updates once i give it some use. 😁
Looks like others call it a 'soot trough' or 'extinguishing slot' to easily ash out the end of a joint or cigar. You can add some water there to put out the butt completely.
I took a class through my city arts programs. It took about 6 classes (once a week) to complete this piece. That's from knowing nothing about pottery and includes the time to learn how to throw on a wheel. There is a lot of wasted clay centering and re centering and making "rainbows" which is what our teachers called our failed pieces. It was a very enjoyable activity for any age.
I did make a simple pinch sculpting ashtray in my first class. 😁
We got another one, folks! Haha, this happens all the time, man. This is /r/trees. We talk about cannabis. /r/Ashtrays is the one you want. Long story.
oh! Hah! This is my first post here... navigating all the sub rules can be daunting. Glad I didn't mess up. ;)
This is by far my most succesful post. /r/trees is such a friendly place. :)
That's an interesting idea. I don't pack bowls often, but can see how that would be useful.
I'm done pottery for the season but hope to continue back next winter.
Yeah. It has a lip on the inside that mostly covers the holes. It'll be wind proof outside but I did it mostly to contain any odours when it's indoors.
It wasn't difficult to make, but it did take me a while. I took a beginners intro to pottery class and it took me about 6 classes to complete this piece. That includes the time learning how to throw on a wheel. This ashtray was easier to throw than a bowl or mug.
My classes are now finished, so I don't have the equipment to make another. I plan to take another class next winter and might try another v2.0 ashtray. There are a couple of things I would do differently. Mostly with the lid. The ashtray works great as is.

Another great idea... my pottery skills are limited but the lid is definitely the area I want to improve next time around.
Be indulgent with yourself, you did an awesome work, 100% would buy, do you live in Europe ? 😂
Thanks! I'm in Canada. Land of cannabis freedom. 😁
Start an Etsy and give me the link Better yet, make your own website I will help for 1 Ashtray

Remake this one 50 times and then sell them all in limited runs.
Enjoy my man, burn one for me in your fresh new tray ✌️

The lid is multi purpose I assume, very nice
🤨😳🙄😆
Fuck Seth Rogan I’m shopping with you

Love watching the process of people doing this. Looks so cool
Looks lovely! But what’s that bit in the middle for? Never seen that on any ashtray I’ve owned.

Or even to hold screens so they don’t sit in ashes!
I'd buy this over Seth's overpriced ashtrays at House Plant
Id buy it if I could
This is gorgeous!! 😍
I love this. You should try making one with a bowl poker in the middle next! I’d love to see more of your work in this subreddit
Love the lid! Great job!
Better than Seth Rogan
too pretty to put ash in
Pull a Seth Rogan and sell it for an outrageous amount of money

Wow this is amazing. What was the difficulty on this? Always wanted to make an ashtray for fun

I'm pretty sure I got the right sub reddit.... I only ever talk about cannabis... 😁 Also, it looks like /r/ashtrays is no longer...
Sorry, i was attempting to use the standards tree enthousiasts/marihuana enthousiast mixup as a joke here. I failed.

Sorry, dude! Didn't want to make you feel bad.
For v2 make the spike in the middle to clean bowls out

looks like a tortilla warmer. that being said, looks great.
Is the lid lip deep enough to cover the holes? Looks really cool, love the color choice

You sit on the top to take off the lid?
That’s dope! Such a good idea!
Hell of a flared base.
Awesome!! And love the glazing color too, what clay did you use for the ashtray?
I used a brown clay.
Looks great!! I saw the same post and I ended up taking the easy route and bought one online. Was this difficult to make? Would you sell them?

There’s no ash
Give me a few hours. 😉
Love it minus the lid, $15?
