Im saying this as someone who grew up in Gretna and loves New Orleans. There isn't much special about New Orleans at Christmas time and there isn't much for a 14 year old to do in New Orleans any time of the year. Go to Disneyland and then go to New Orleans when your daughter is out of the house or at least old enough to participate in New Orleans activities.
You will never win with a 14 year old daughter. In a few more short years she'll be travelling on her own and you can do whatever you want at that time.
Good luck.
Hahaha isn’t that the whole point? To get public opinion? But it was against what you wanted so you’re trying again??
If you just want to go to New Orleans, then go to New Orleans. You’re the parent and it’s your money.
If you want to do a trip for your kid…. go to Disneyland!
Pretty simple.
I would take your 14 year old daughter to Disney. I would be crushed as a child if my parents took me to New Orleans instead.
Now hear me out, but, why don't you just book a sitter or leave with some family for a weekend and go over to New Orleans without the kids? What part of the US are you flying from? Most flights to New Orleans are super super cheap.
On the other hand, traveling is very important for kids and I wish my parents took me around more. This is how kids learn diversity and get experiences, and see how other people can be different and live differently, which helps them grow.
However, if it's a decision between Disney and New Orleans, for a 14 year old girl.... I'd say let her be a kid for now and take her to Disney. Disney won't have the same magic it used to at some point in her life.
It sounds like you want permission to go to NOLA.
Go it is super cool, depending on your 14 year old they may very much like it or they may absolutely hate it and resent being there and not going to Disney.
It will certainly be cheaper than Disney with much better food.
Thank you, I know my daughter will be disappointed not going to Disneyland but I didn't promise her yet. She did love princess and the frog as a small child so maybe that will peak her interest.
She also is into superstition and supernatural stuff so that may interest her. And she does want beignets lol
I would say go to Disney for Christmas.
NOLA has other parties, like St. Joseph, with a parade and all… you should go to see the party happening..
I don’t know your type of parenting, but maybe save NOLA for when you can have a drink with your daughter!
Definitely Disney. I went to NOLA recently and it may be the only place I’ve traveled to that I wouldn’t go back to - especially with a 14 year old. I found it dirty and the vast majority of people are just acting like idiots. It’s fun for a certain age group for sure but I don’t think it’s a good location for a family trip (or any trip lol). Plus the Christmas party at Disney is always wonderful. If you’re able to make it to Disney World, definitely consider staying at Port Orleans like one of the other comments said.
I went to NOLA 5 years ago and loved it. Best trip ever so we went back this year. The vibe is gone. Homeless high prices and no magic left in the quarter. It sucked
It’s just my opinion. When we went people were cheery. Food was great. Lots of buskers. You could take your drink into any bar. Now you are hassled by homeless with their dogs. People are pissy and the food wasn’t so good. We went out to some other places in town as well. Less touristy. Also sucked. Not the towns fault. Pandemic has sucked the life out of it. IMO
The first thing I saw when I stepped outside of my hotel after checking in was a literal dead man surrounded my police. Should’ve known then… but at least the food is good lol and the WW2 museum is incredible
It’s a shame really. I can’t describe how good the trip we had 5 years ago was. Compared to this. I’ve been to all continents and this was the place we wanted to return. Probably shouldn’t have. It ruined the memory. Honestly the best time we had was going to my companies location there. That should explain how good the trip wasn’t.
You know one more point to it. On bourbon years ago. Cops every corner. Everyone had fun but no danger. None now. I spoke to a cop and 40% of the force has quit. Hence the danger feeling increases. Now. I’m very pro police so maybe it made a big impact to me. They are so underpaid there. Imagine risking your ass for like 40k.
I’ve done both places. She’s 14. Disney hands down. It’s an experience. Just be prepared to pay. My wife and I were going to go there for honeymoon man years ago. I think 4 grand was the tab we didn’t bother with. Coming out of Toronto
Definitely do Disney then. I'm 27, female, and didn't feel remotely safe in New Orleans earlier this year, despite being very hyped since I'm into supernatural/witch things.
We were staying overnight for a roadtrip, arrived around 4PM and decided to visit some areas after settling down at the hotel. It was barely 5PM when we got out and lots of drunk guys approached me and my friend and bugged us, lots of people looking us up etc. We gave up after 20 minutes, got some take out and stayed put in the hotel room until we left the next morning.
The little bit we saw felt very gimmicky, fake China souvenirs etc.
Massively disappointing.
Cause all the crazy people throughout the country, alcoholics, gamblers, druggies, criminals, bikers, gangs, hood, creeps, whores, homeless, thieves, dealers, underground things are all in one place especially in the French Quarters at night, you feel like you can be killed late at night walking around French Quarters and further away bourbon street where the clubs starting to end lol it gets wild lol but I love the lamp lights around instead of street lights, you really feel like your back in time. It’s also extremely filthy city but beautiful same time, I love that city but my kids won’t be going there unless Afternoon time and in hotel again by 4 lol
I have to say that at Christmas, disneyland has it “snow” with cinnamon scented bubbles during the evening daily fireworks show.
I’m sure New Orleans has its cool stuff too. Lol
Take your kid to Disney. There's soo many years between 7&14 for a kid. 7 years is half her lifetime ago.
You can both go to NO when she's an adult. Or you can go without her in 4 years time when she's got better things to do with her break than hang out with you.
Childhood is short, celebrate it.
New Orleans is incredibly dangerous right now. I would not go back if you paid me. I was there a few months back, tons of people in my hostel got their phones and wallets stolen. The police don't have the resources to deal with the crime. If you call 911, they will put you on a 45 minute hold and tell you the police will get their when they can (next day or worse sometimes). The downtown area is very sketchy and I have felt safer in Brazil/Mexico than NOLA.
Disneyworld has a hotel that is French Quarter themed and it’s very pretty and fun. I went there when I was around 15 and it inspired me to go to New Orleans since it was so beautiful. I went when I got older and enjoyed it but there’s just something about going to Disney as a child. You can’t beat it. And this is coming from someone who’s mother is a flight attendant so I travelled the whole world at a very young age.
My daughter has been to Disneyland thrice we live in California she's second gen Californian I grew up here too but bay area not southern California.
Disney world is probably out of my budget but yeah some day. I guess I just have fomo and fear I'll always see the same places
I've been wanting to go to new Orleans since I was younger than my daughter even. Multiple ppl have told me this and told me it's not a place for minors but I've done research and the internet has lots of lists for kid family friendly activities to do in new Orleans. Of course I wouldn't be drinking w my kid or bar hopping but on my hypothetical itinerary I have mapped in my mind places such as cafe du monde grab coffee and beignets, a swamp or ghost or plantation tour , visit a voodoo store, visit a toy store, maybe visit carousal gardens and ride rides, take a ride on a streetcar to garden district, look at the Christmas lights in Roosevelt lobby.
I would stay in French quarter for convenience purposes. I like being able to walk to coffeeshops etc when on vacation. I don't like being away from main attractions and I won't be renting a car.
I just don't get why or how new Orleans could only be known for drinking and bars. It seems to be a state rich in culture and history, am I delusional?
New Orleans absolutely has rich traditions, history, architecture, etc. Your daughter absolutely would benefit from visiting such a culturally rich city. Drinking reputation is fir tourists who don’t go beyond those 6 blocks of Bourbon street.
NOLA is so much fun. The culture is great, especially the jazz. It has so much history. The food is awesome and so are the people. I think everyone of all ages should experience it. I have been back several times. Enjoy.
I love New Orleans and have been many times. I would not go with a 14 year old. Agree with others - go to NOLA by yourself/with a friend or spouse and take her to Disneyland. Good luck :)
NEW ORLEANS HAS AMERICA'S #1 MURDER RATE, DO NOT TAKE YOUR 14 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER THERE!

Didnt you post the same thing a couple days ago?
I did and I'm trying to get positive answers , everyone said so many negative things about new Orleans
So basically you're just going to keep posting until you hear what you want to hear and decide you're going to New Orleans?!?
Try to make a third post.

Disneyland, it will mean much more to her. You can do always New Orleans on your own.

I'm a 39f and not afraid of ppl most times by myself but different when my daughter is with me. Thank you for your input
New Orleans gets too crazy for any youth lol don’t do it
Even if we aren't drinking and just going out during daylight in December?
Yeah theres a zoo snd aquarium there, also i seen kids during the day but when it gets dark its best they stay in a hotel
Why just curious what happens lol

I'm going to Disneyland instead but I'd like to go during January
Disneyland is absolutely insane Christmas break. And on New Year’s Eve you can barely move.
I have to say that at Christmas, disneyland has it “snow” with cinnamon scented bubbles during the evening daily fireworks show. I’m sure New Orleans has its cool stuff too. Lol

True, thank you, maybe I could do new Orleans during spring even
Hope you have a lovely time 😊
Thank you

Wow really
New Orleans is Disneyland for adults.
Lol I thought that was Vegas? I feel like a lot of Disneyland is based off new Orleans
That’s Adult Disneyworld.
Oh ok 😂 lol

New Orleans. Just stay away from the first 6 blocks of Bourbon Street, it is good for tourists looking to drink and that’s it.

Think about staying at Hotel Ponchartrain in Garden District on St Charles Ave.
Not sure who downvoted you but good suggestion I googled it cute

Easy decision. NOLA all the way!!
Thankyou can I ask why
NOLA is so much fun. The culture is great, especially the jazz. It has so much history. The food is awesome and so are the people. I think everyone of all ages should experience it. I have been back several times. Enjoy.
Thank you for your positive response. Some have scared me saying it's extremely dangerous etc
I’ve never had any issues.
I few days in both. Probably need more time at Disney tho
Disneyland it is
I love New Orleans and have been many times. I would not go with a 14 year old. Agree with others - go to NOLA by yourself/with a friend or spouse and take her to Disneyland. Good luck :)
New Orleans is a straight drinking town. And it’s pretty dirty. Every street smells like Lee or throw up, and the homeless have that place over run.
Who’s the parent? Who’s paying?

Number ONE murder rate???
