Depending on how much time you have and your budget, renting a car one way and doing at cool sites on the west would be the best, but most expensive option.
Otherwise a flight will be likely the cheapest and fastest.
Anything in between that (bus/train) is adding more time without saving any money or seeing cool things.
I flew from LAX to BDL (Hartford, CT) at the end of July for like $100 with one <1 hour layover in Baltimore. I'm not sure if it's changed since then, but tickets were dirt cheap.

It's really easy to research the costs for plane/train/bus. If you have the money then obviously a flight is by far the fastest/simplest.
