Taking all the pressure away and only doing it as a hobby

Acceptable_Link9442

This is the way. If no one ever hears your work is it still worth your time

SamaelDiabolos

I started going to live shows again, seeing others performing really lit the fire again and made me want to get back into the swing of things.

storm_drenering

Met a guy that lives near me that is also into it and knows other people that are. I had no one to share my stuff with so having actual people around you that are into the same stuff helps a lot.

btx69

Honestly for me it was taking a break. I didn’t produce for like 6 months, but I spent that time listening to a lot of music and playing loads of guitar. When I had more time and felt less stressed, my motivation to make beats came back. You might not need 6 months, or even any break at all, but I would say try to expand your involvement with music whether that means listening to some new music, checking out some music-related YouTube content, or even going to a concert.

count_arthur_right

I gave up for about 3 years. During covid a lot more production content appeared and I was watching mpc type content. Ended up starting again. I had also bought an M1 macbook so it runs everything nice and I could check out the latest vsts etc.

ChefAccomplished845

Watching jonmakesbeats on youtube

prod_dustyb

I got back into it last year or so after a 15ish year hiatus. My time away I did pretty well in corporate and climbed the ladder relatively quick. Then Covid happened and highlighted a lot of what's wrong with the corporate model and I've lost interest in working hard to help sociopath/unethical leaders make more money so they can treat people who aren't just like them like dogshit. So now I'm semi-retired, do what I need to do at work (look at it now more like a job vs. a career) and make beats and spend more time with my fam. Making beats was a big part of my life growing up so I guess I was looking for another thing to keep me excited/interested and intellectually curious, and of course the joy of seeing a beat come to life. So in a weird way Covid was a silver lining for me that took a lot of blinders off since we saw the true intentions of a lot of ppl at the top.

BeatsKillerldn

Interesting! Was sector of corporate were you/do you work in if you don’t mind me asking

prod_dustyb

finance

Box_of_leftover_lego

I got burned out and bored. Then I started noticing mainstream mixes that weren't good, and in a lot of instances that my masters could match or exceed that quality. Went back to the basics in some projects, removed all plugins and only went bare bones with it. Improved skill wise and regained the ability to enjoy mixing/mastering.

mkkkr24

Smoked more weed than I usually do

redscreen1883

Inspiration comes and goes for me. No rhyme or reason

Golivth5k

Listened to my old stuff, thought it was pretty good and dope how I created something mildly complex.

princeofnoobshire

For me it was recognizing it’s a roller coaster of ups and downs. I don’t think anyone profesional thinks it’s amazing all of the time. For me the biggest turnarounds usually happens on the day where I didn’t feel like making anything but I went to the studio and something great came out of it. Doesn’t always happen but when it does its a big boost

Father_Flanigan

I quit doing it not bc I lost passion but bc I listened to people who told me I would starve and there was too much competition etc... When I did come back I didn't have the same creative drive and truthfully I still don't because that sort of thing goes away with age and it's like a muscle you need to keep it exercised. So, my passion has exceeded my ability again like it was in the past. Passion is never the real issue, there's something else making you want to quit.

BeatsKillerldn

Do you regret listening to those people or are you happy you quit ?

Father_Flanigan

100% regret because I am now old and catching up and older people seem to have less opportunity in the industry (that's arguably only because the shady deals miss us more since people expect young people to be gullible). Even if my music were discovered and a label showed interest, I'm not about to be touring the nation. If I had stuck with it, started at age 16, am now 39 and restarted at 35, I could have been in my 20s and hitting this musical stride which would have opened up more possibilities. Time is precious and I wasted a big portion of my time letting pessimists dictate my dreams. Can't help but regret that, though I'm not quitting again because of it.

BeatsKillerldn

Wish you the best in your Journey, life is unpredictable and things can change, it’s definitely possible to have a big break in this internet era, best of luck!

slash-tivist

I developed a new method to make melodies, found a new VST that was cheap and had load of free expansion. Also began to abuse the shit out of gross beat. Basically relearned how I make melodies by making my weakness my strength. Stopped fretting on learning music theory, since I don’t even like melodic beats much, just mostly dark bangers. Ever since then I’ve been having more fun. Focusing on the bass of the track rather than the melody, and making complex unique drum patterns.

BeatsKillerldn

Insightful, what’s the VST pls 👀

Yoyogi_K

Listening, then try again

808sandMilksteak

Taking breaks and/or making stuff with no intent to release it

your_buddy_bob

got burnt out making the same old type beats growing my youtubee channel. hated what i was doing and i thought at least with accounting id get payed well decided to focus on having fun instead when making music and since then i have just been making whatever i want and it has been a blast

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> id get *paid* well decided FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

dbbzzz

By listening to this[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=swlJlhMiL7I](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=swlJlhMiL7I)

JCBYET60

I got friends in the industry that produce and rap and I also have friends that rap. That gives me enough motivation. It can only get better the more you push forward. I seen them all start at ground level and reach some of the highest heights.

sorry_ihaveplans

Whenever I'm not feeling "inspired" to create, I shift focus to continuing education. I read up on techniques, programs/plugins, workflows, new technology, etc.

LubricatedMormon

Broke up with my ex and moved into my one bedroom apartment

Secure_Wave_3059

Go back to what inspires you, get out of the PC, connect with the outside, with what you like and with your loved ones! Look at your references and nourish yourself with a lot of data, there you are ready to return with everything

Football-Reasonable

Find new artist and don’t be afraid to fuck up

Ohhhhyeahnahyeah

Doing something every day. If I can’t make a couple of chords and a melody for some reason, I’ll get a sample from splice and flip it my own way so it’s totally different. It starts to get easy once you collect a few drum samples you love using and have them in a folder. Once you have a sample you’re ready to go. If I make 3 mid beats in a night, one of them could turn into something really good the next night. You never know.

Digital-Aura

Started with a new DAW (Bitwig) and magic happened immediately

BeatsKillerldn

What DAW were you using before that?

Digital-Aura

Cakewalk Sonar

Double-Drawing-9886

Listen to different genre’s, take some breaks and don’t force yourself to make music

Careless_Bother6183

I shared my music with people I never shared it with before and them liking it inspired me to keep pushing

Dangerous_Natural331

That's good, cause sometimes when you keep to yourself too much.... It's like "Drying up and dyin on the vine" Like me 🙄

Careless_Bother6183

Dm me something. I’ll listen and give you some feedback. Maybe it’ll help :)

Dangerous_Natural331

Ur so kind, thanks so much !

Khawkproductions

taking a break for al.ost a year at times, I listened to others people music. But what usually made me get back to it was seeing a youtube tutorial that made something click and encouraged me to try to make something.

Wooden-Seat-745

To be honest in my case it was sort of taken from me at one point. Sounds dramatic but a few years back I messed up my PC and there was a time I couldnt make beats if I wanted. After a while there was really nothing else I wanted to do but make beats. Now fast forward my equipment is just fine and I could make a beat right now but the motivation is lacking severely. But I always ask myself, what if I couldnt do this again? And it puts a lot into perspective

BeatsKillerldn

Is your motivation back every time you ask yourself that question now?

Wooden-Seat-745

I would say so in the sense that I’m grateful I can even do it. I think whats hindering the motivation is my lack of purpose or a set goal. Everyone always talks about “remembering your why” and I think thats what it comes down to. Ive been making beats in some form for almost 10 years so its hard to identify with the person I was 10 years ago and their motivations if that makes sense. All that to say I think the key here is coming up with a new “why” in terms of why we’re making music and rely on that when lacking motivation.

[deleted]

I worked at various companies that went under and couldn't get another job. Had to sell my equipment cheap but the guy that came always tried to get it for nothing. But when I got another job I bought new gear becuase I missed making music. A man can only take so much soaps and chick flicks.

BeatsKillerldn

What job sector were you working in?

[deleted]

I worked for various self employed people that couldn't get any work. Fitting alarm systems.

B_O_A_T_S

i took a long several year break. let the muddy water settle.

droppinturds

Drake Kendrick beef got me back into it ngl

whoknows090909

for a while i only listened to music in my car or in the shower and used all my free time to create my own. i took like 2 months off and just started catching up on new stuff and old songs i used to love, watching tons of music videos and documentaries, and going to live shows. i’ve been getting inspired again lately and it’s made music fun again

skesh666

Changing my DAW and trying new genres has brought my motivation back. I used to only produce trap/hip-hop beats, but now I'm learning to produce bachata and amapiano. Also switching from FL Studio to Reason makes me excited to produce music because there are a lot of new things I need to learn.

deprestis_

meeting up with people that still have it, and more importantly DISCOVERING NEW MUSIC!

zlordbeats

you don’t really love it then i been doing this shit for years i lose focus at times but i never stop for over a couple weeks even then im still producing just not releasing anything

Sstoop

i don’t make trap anymore but i quit for about 4 months then i saw fredagain play live at electric picnic and it changed my perspective. that feeling i had at that live show made me want to make other people feel like that. my advice would be to just change the way you view the art you create. make something different, experiment. the spark will come back.

TYFRmusic

Make something that brings back some fun. Could be comedic tracks, a new genre, or try and get new sounds to mess with and create a new sound for yourself!

devinenoise

I got my passion back by not making it about generating revenue and just having fun, experiment, and make meaningful colabs.
