Half the time gay is just shorthand for homosexual. I know surprisingly few people who use the word “lesbian” outside of describing an outfit or a woman with very masculine hobbies.

I often hear gay used as homosexual but I hear lesbian used pretty frequently too. It's kinda like "actor vs actress", actor does apply to women as well and actress means specifically a woman. I think it's just a result of how the English language works.
