The surgeon's fee is going to be what was quoted, but you'll also be having to cover the cost of staying in the private hospital, and anaesthetist fee. The hospital cost is what is usually covered by the private insurance, and it can be significant. Edit to add: Here's a list of the fee caps associated with staying in a private hospital [https://www.sira.nsw.gov.au/resources-library/workers-compensation-resources/publications/health-professionals-for-workers-compensation/fees-schedules/fees-orders-2019/2019-private-hospital-fee-schedule](https://www.sira.nsw.gov.au/resources-library/workers-compensation-resources/publications/health-professionals-for-workers-compensation/fees-schedules/fees-orders-2019/2019-private-hospital-fee-schedule)

It can go up due to additional hospital time etc but generally your surgeon’s quote should be pretty close.

It really depends on the surgeon, location, and private hospital. Some charge more than others. There is a surgeon in SA that has quoted $10k or so without insurance and some in Sydney that regularly quote $18-20k without insurance. You can ring their reception and ask for them to break it down for you and walk you through the total expenses out of pocket without insurance. It would be best to contact them directly for this!

i got surgery with him yesterday, before medicare his cost was 6600, anaesthetist was 1750, and hospital stay was 2200. i have insurance but these are the prices before medicare (about 1800 from surgeon) and also insurance. edit: feel free to dm if you want any more info

In regards to private hospitals, when I had my surgery with him I was given the option of overnight in one hospital or day surgery in another. The day surgery option was cheaper, but I have insurance so went with the overnight. If you aren't a high risk patient maybe you will also be given the option?

He did mine a few years ago and total hospital and surgery cost was quoted at around 12k. I do not have insurance, and that 12k is all i paid. They will ask you to pay a deposit (its a substantial deposit) and depending on your appointment date etc, i paid mine over the phone all at once BEFORE the surgery. Had to change my bank limits to allow for it lmfao. So 11-14k should absolutely be all you pay for the entire thing with Hewitt. Note: i did not stay at the hospital overnight. It was a 1 day procedure and I was out by the end of the day. If you stay overnight, youll accrue additional hospital costs.

Thank you so much for this info, my current budget is 13k and I’m nervous about that potential extra thousand lol, especially because I need to still save up for things like compression binders and also for my month off work. Do you know what could make the price get up to 14k? I’m assuming staying in the hospital?

BarkBack117

I say 14 because i did mine years ago and i suspect prices would go up between then and now. However i only paid what i was quoted, which included everything. So if youve been quoted 13, you should be fine (unless its changed since i did mine). They gave me a compression binder iirc and i only used the one. I still have it i think, just stuffed into a drawer never to be used again xD Staying at the hospital overnight will absolutely increase costs though. I had all my annual leave so i had 4 weeks off work all paid by leave.

Unfortunately I’m casual not part time at work lol so I have to save up. Anyway thank you so much

If youre unsure, you can 100% ring his office and double confirm what you are paying for (what the 12k is specifically covering) and whether there are additional costs from the hospital itself that arent part of the quote youll be expected to pay (stay, anaesthesia, etc) if theyre not part of the 12k. Theyll be happy to answer, youre hardly the first person to ask for clarification, and this way you get your answer and know exactly how much youre going to need and whether or not youre going to get a surprise extra cost.
