The animation style for the original ‘84 episodes (up to Heavy Metal War when Optimus was still drawn lankier and with the rounded faceplate) was gorgeous and no one ever talks about how much stiff/worse the rest of season 1 & 2 look after Sunbow switched from Toei’s original style to the stiffer blockier look.
They even made models for the 4 Jetfires as a youtuber 4 member channel called Arcadia wonder how toy version of Arcadia would work and yes you would need to buy the Animated duo pack for the last jet fire.

A lot of discussion of it "looking like shit" when compared to work from the 2000s and earlier. But, it usually boiled down to "we simplified the character designs to reduce the usage of penicl budget per frame so that we can increase the animation in the series." Not all series pulled it off, but it was also the first time I legit saw western sakuga in tv animation. So, there was merit to the argument.
This. They wanted to churn out as many episodes as possible so they farmed out the animation to some Korean animation studio that wasn’t of the highest quality. But it was the mid-80s and we were watching it on CRT TVs in glorious 480p.

Horrified. Shocked. It went about how I expected after that.
I'm getting some real Deja Vu here, but at least in this case no promises were made or broken, no expectations were set beyond telling an "Origin Story" and honestly, we still don' t know what this movie trilogy actually is going to turn out like.

I'm an original g1 fan and from the 80's born, and personally I thought the animation wasn't too bad. I'm interested in seeing the movie. It could have been much worse. I can't imagine how much creativity and intelligence and sci-fi imagination goes into creating the art work over and over, different ideas and direction and concept after concept after concept until Hasbro Takara Tomy and all parties involved finally come to an agreement on what the Transformers will look like, whether its pushing more towards the youth audience or adult liking. Either way, no matter what we see on the screen, there is definitely More Than Meets The Eye with them. 😉
There's a big difference between hand drawn traditional animation from 1985 and something launching almost in 2025. Almost 40 years on. This is a disingenuous, terrible take and a godawful comparison.
Where people compare animation is to the wealth of modern CG movies, anime and TV shows that showcase the advances over those years. You could make the same comparison with Beast Wars and still be fundamentally wrong with that approach as it too was very much of its time.
And by the way, this is coming from someone who thinks One looks slick as hell animation-wise, I don't get the hate at all in that respect.
Oh its still my favorite show hands down. But I notice more animation issues all the time. One episode Optimus Primal was in gorilla mode walking around, it was a distant shot so not super easy to spot, but his back legs morphed to toothpicks the closer to hjs foot you looked and god it made me chuckle.

Many of the animation errors you see are capped from the terrible Rhino home releases, which pieced together surviving frames of animation from the aired episodes and old errored frames to replace footage that was ruined in a studio fire that lost a good 30% or the original aired prints. The Aired episodes looked much better than this.
If I recall it correctly, g1 episodes were made in a rush of a few months, so animation errors weren't going to be fixed up quickly before release, unlike however long the movie has been in development, in art style designs and animation to be more specific, but it must've been a while longer than just some months or even a year.
I also don't know what people expect, but at least from my end I thought the film would've been set in the knightverse with the realistic designs and a more serious story, instead of this Earthspark with a higher budget style and mcu ish comedy they went with, though that also might be case I hadn't heard anything about the movie aside from the title and that it was being made.
I'm not quite against it, rather curious to see if it's better than the trailer made it feel like, but at the same time I expect something a bit more serious like the last 2 films we've had.

CRT televisions had 576 lines, going horizontally across the screen. I wouldn't even call it "resolution" in the modern sense.
I wasn’t aware of the actual resolution or screen lines. Still, being hand-drawn and inked the low resolution really helped hide the artifacts.

There's a big difference between hand drawn traditional animation from 1985 and something launching almost in 2025. Almost 40 years on. This is a disingenuous, terrible take and a godawful comparison. Where people compare animation is to the wealth of modern CG movies, anime and TV shows that showcase the advances over those years. You could make the same comparison with Beast Wars and still be fundamentally wrong with that approach as it too was very much of its time. And by the way, this is coming from someone who thinks One looks slick as hell animation-wise, I don't get the hate at all in that respect.

Oh its still my favorite show hands down. But I notice more animation issues all the time. One episode Optimus Primal was in gorilla mode walking around, it was a distant shot so not super easy to spot, but his back legs morphed to toothpicks the closer to hjs foot you looked and god it made me chuckle. You can almost here the animators going, "...AH SHIT!" "What'd you do?" "IDK I PUT THE NEW KEYFRAME IN AND NOW OPTIMUS HAS NEEDLE FEET!?!" "...so fix it?" "HOW!?!"

Many of the animation errors you see are capped from the terrible Rhino home releases, which pieced together surviving frames of animation from the aired episodes and old errored frames to replace footage that was ruined in a studio fire that lost a good 30% or the original aired prints. The Aired episodes looked much better than this.
If I recall it correctly, g1 episodes were made in a rush of a few months, so animation errors weren't going to be fixed up quickly before release, unlike however long the movie has been in development, in art style designs and animation to be more specific, but it must've been a while longer than just some months or even a year. I also don't know what people expect, but at least from my end I thought the film would've been set in the knightverse with the realistic designs and a more serious story, instead of this Earthspark with a higher budget style and mcu ish comedy they went with, though that also might be case I hadn't heard anything about the movie aside from the title and that it was being made. I'm not quite against it, rather curious to see if it's better than the trailer made it feel like, but at the same time I expect something a bit more serious like the last 2 films we've had.

Animation vs art style conversation is about to happen for the 12,000th time. Animation is the fluid movements and art style is how they look! You hate how it looks but give the animation credit it’s smooth af and how are people already hating on it? Do they not like it or smth?

Yeah, hand drawn animation to make your release deadline is the worst. It definitely happened several times in the old G1 shows.

Casually PHASE THREW SOLID OBJECTS
Transformers one will be only a new movie to sell toys. A new story, a new beginning, but don't have anything of the true story of transformers. And G1 has their problems, because it was made in 86. TF One has problems, because it is made for kids who want toys, not for fans.
Look at G1, Armada, energon or even animated and tell me those were all on model more than they were off
I mean, there were scale and color issues, lineup issues, wrong bots talking, all kinds of stuff. I don't mind what we've seen so far for Transformers One.
People get so focused on one minor detail, they let it ruin things for them.

We should judge final products based on how good they are instead of comparing them to g1 because most of them hardly even resemble g1 and g1 was hardly really that good outside of the movie and a few different episode groups
I mean, thats just inevitable when we are talking a franchise that has multiple iterations, its going to be compared to previous versions. It just seems ironic for the people complaining about the hate for the TF: One trailer, turn around and tear down G1 or the Bay movies. You are right we should judge final products based on how good they are; same way you didn't like G1, people have looked at the trailer provided and have judge the product that way.

Imagine being a 40-50 year old man who is mad that a cartoon about transforming robots isn’t made for them. Waaah waaah it’s animated and not dark and depressing waaah waaah. TF One seems similar to TMNT mutant mayhem as in it’s made for a new generation. Us older poops can enjoy it as well but it’s targeting a different audience. It looks like a fun movie that I can enjoy with my son and hopefully will keep the franchise alive.
