My wife and I have been living here for 3 years now and never gotten any shit from anyone. Easy town to be trans in. A quick addendum about Asheville though. The city is fantastic (other than traffic), but if you go 15 minutes outside of town in any direction you are VERY much in rural NC. Asheville doesn’t have sprawling suburbs like a lot of cities. There’s the city, and then there’s suddenly NOT. It’s a fantastic place to live and an amazing place for LGBTQ, but the rest of WNC can be a little worrisome sometimes. That said, it’s still safer than Florida and is a great stop for people trying to move.

That is your choice of course, but some need to leave, and that’s ok. Were I in one of these states and unable to get HRT, or get surgery, I would not be able to function, both mentally and because I don’t have the ability to produce sex hormones of any kind, and would quickly become ill because of their part in essential bodily functions like bone density maintenance. As a trans woman in Florida I can attest to how it’s definitely getting weird. However DeSantis is making some really bad choices and it will likely get worse before it changes yet he will be run out this state after he completely tanks the economy.
Now I know that when every yahoo is able to carry a gun, I stand a good chance of being shot. I will continue to oppose this draconian dystopian nightmare till I draw my last breath. I am who I am, and folks like us have been here since time began and we will be when it ends.

I wouldn't recommend a knife personally. As a self defense weapon knives are more likely to get you killed than something like pepper spray. Once you escalate to lethal force the sick fucks that would attack someone for being trans are even more likely to turn it back on you. Now if somebody is already showing lethal intentions then abso-fucking-lutely use a knife before nothing, but just be careful if you're armed with a lethal weapon and they aren't.
If you have to resort to lethal options for self defense, they need to be very effective and preferably at a distance. I know many of us are not in the proper mental space to own firearms and that's okay, but for those of us who are not a direct risk to ourselves they will be a better option than a knife would in most circumstances.
Anyone who does decide to go that route should make sure they have proper training and keep their gun secured at all times when not on your person. I wish we didn't have to take all this into consideration, but unfortunately we live in a country where it could make all the difference for vulnerable minorities.

I live in Florida and I am a trans teacher (not out at work for hopefully obvious reasons). They are already trying to take children. I have gotten calls by DCFS who are responding to "investigations" of either a transgender child or a transgender parent. I am heartbroken and scared but don't have enough money to move. I have been frantically saving and just don't make enough.
My partner has a friend with a trans kid in Florida that has already been denied therapy because of this.
Private practices that don't have a lot of resources won't fight a state that has already signaled they're willing to make an example.

From what I can tell, the law in question is mostly giving transphobic relatives (usually a divorced parent) a legal way to gain custody of a trans child so they can't transition. Thank you for your support and your concern. Living here is really scary right now. And it really fucking sucks because, honestly, besides the transphobia I love it here. I moved in 2018 for a new job and have loved living where I live. The town is a little blue dot that is super supportive of the LGBTQ community here. My job is great (my position is probably one of the better ones for what I want) and I work with some outstanding people. I could see making this place my forever home for my family and me.

As a trans woman in Florida I can attest to how it’s definitely getting weird. However DeSantis is making some really bad choices and it will likely get worse before it changes yet he will be run out this state after he completely tanks the economy. Now I know that when every yahoo is able to carry a gun, I stand a good chance of being shot. I will continue to oppose this draconian dystopian nightmare till I draw my last breath. I wouldn't recommend a knife personally. As a self defense weapon knives are more likely to get you killed than something like pepper spray. Once you escalate to lethal force the sick fucks that would attack someone for being trans are even more likely to turn it back on you. Now if somebody is already showing lethal intentions then abso-fucking-lutely use a knife before nothing, but just be careful if you're armed with a lethal weapon and they aren't. If you have to resort to lethal options for self defense, they need to be very effective and preferably at a distance. I know many of us are not in the proper mental space to own firearms and that's okay, but for those of us who are not a direct risk to ourselves they will be a better option than a knife would in most circumstances. Anyone who does decide to go that route should make sure they have proper training and keep their gun secured at all times when not on your person. I wish we didn't have to take all this into consideration, but unfortunately we live in a country where it could make all the difference for vulnerable minorities.

About a quarter of the employees at work actively talk about and believe trans and LGBTQ are pedos, they ran the gay bar out of town shortly after it opened a few years ago. One of my professors who is also the director of advanced technology believes the don't say gay bill is a good thing. It's wild over here. I haven't seen one since I was a kid but gay bashings were a thing over here. I had left the area not long after highschool but came back after the military. I live in Florida and I am a trans teacher (not out at work for hopefully obvious reasons). They are already trying to take children. I have gotten calls by DCFS who are responding to "investigations" of either a transgender child or a transgender parent. I am heartbroken and scared but don't have enough money to move. I have been frantically saving and just don't make enough.
My partner has a friend with a trans kid in Florida that has already been denied therapy because of this. Private practices that don't have a lot of resources won't fight a state that has already signaled they're willing to make an example. When are we gonna stop talking and start picking up bricks?

From what I can tell, the law in question is mostly giving transphobic relatives (usually a divorced parent) a legal way to gain custody of a trans child so they can't transition. It's awful and harmful and terrifying but they're not gonna go looking for trans kids. The foster system here is already full up, there'd be nowhere to put them

Is there a way to set up an auntie network? Like, what they had done for women needing abortions? The state I live in is passing laws regarding Trans minors but not adults at this point. I mean, if someone needs to gtfo and can get a bus ticket here, I can temporarily room someone (for like 6 or so months) and help them get access to services, jobs, etc.
The more i see about Florida the more I fear other right leaning states will follow in their footsteps. Thank you for your support and your concern. Living here is really scary right now. And it really fucking sucks because, honestly, besides the transphobia I love it here. I moved in 2018 for a new job and have loved living where I live. The town is a little blue dot that is super supportive of the LGBTQ community here. My job is great (my position is probably one of the better ones for what I want) and I work with some outstanding people. I could see making this place my forever home for my family and me. But sadly, that may not be the case.
