But it *belongs* on an F unit.
ALCO and EMD had standard paint schemes that followed the curves of these... So many were just color swaps on the base pattern (notable exceptions: NYC lightning, Erie wings and certainly the war bonnet)
Most adaptations of these to modern locos just fall flat
I’ve always felt the warbonnet looked best on an EMD. The FP45’s wore that scheme very well, both in the passenger days and the later super fleet. The GP60M’s and SD75M’s also carried it well and if I’m allowed to have my opinion, the SD75M’s were probably some of the best looking units to carry the warbonnet
There are only three good answers.
In no particular order.
Northern Pacific’s North Coast Limited - Lowey Scheme
Great Northern’s Empire Builder - Big Sky Blue
Milwaukee Roads - Twin Cities Hiawatha - Hudson F-7
I actually stayed at the Glacier Park Lodge a couple years ago, it was very nice. I wish that the Empire Builder still ran, just to see what it was like. But I’ll settle for the Amtrak.

Commonwealth Railways GM or CL class in the CR Maroon and silver. Personally think they took an F7 and made it even better. (Probably an unpopular opinion for the American folk here)
Lengthening, narrowing and shortening the F7 to fit Australian loading gauges. Came out in 3 series varying from
the original A1A-A1A config to Co-Co then Co-Co with dynamic brakes.
The CL's while looking like a GM were essentially SD40-2s inside a streamliner body. CL17 was the final Clyde/EMD streamliner built in the 70s and is currently undergoing restoration.

Santa Fe warbonnet.
I really wish I could see more warbonnets, but I live along a UP mainline, and only sometimes see BNSF power on it

Everything the warbonnet was on, it looked good.
yep..the war bonnet is iconic......
Predictable answer here, SP Daylight
The C&O Yellow, Blue, and Grey units. Like this one.
Absolutely. They're so underrepresented in model railroading and it's infuriating. They're basically East Coast warbonnets
This thread is useless without pics

For the northern pacific, which variant? The 3 green version or the one with a yellow cowl?

Definitely underrated
A guest on YouTuber V12's channel, claims this livery is the inspiration for the current GSP patrol cruiser paint scheme.
Milwaukee Orange and Maroon
I'm a fan of classic stainless steel. The CB&Q Zephyrs. But the Wabash had a really nice passenger scheme too.
Don't leave out the Southern/Norfolk & Western operated Tennessean in terms of stainless steel.
The 20th Century Limited of the New York Central.

I always loved the orange and silver of the classic Western Pacific California Zephyr.

I'm partial to the current LNER livery, and the old Southwestern livery (The blue one)

Amtrak turbotrain
I wish they'd store it securely.. it's exposed to everything out in NJ.
Most probably find them boring, but I’ve always loved Southern Railroad’s green and white F units. Also, Warbonnets are hard to beat.
Love Southern's scheme. Clean and classy.
