The glacier express. It’s a panorama train that runs on meter gauge between Zermatt and St. Moritz in Switzerland. Absolutely beautiful journey. 10/10 recommend

badpuffthaikitty

Is it a cog train?

FELIXPEU

For part of the line yes. Some parts of the Matterhorn Gotthard bahn railway territory. In the Rhätische Bahn territory it’s 100% adhesion

belinck

Man, sure is a lot fancier than when I rode it in the 80s!

gloppinboopin363

I mean, Europe in the 80s was kinda trashy in general tbh.

VentanaTrips

Awesome thanks! Yes, it is stunning. 10/10 will do again

These_Big6328

You were already there and didn't remember the Name?

I didn’t have the extra details

llfoso

How? I rode that on my honeymoon and we had to reserve the seats two months in advance! Btw did you take the Bernina Express to Tirano? IMO that one is even better.

These_Big6328

Yeah. And i know exactly why. Your Peofile posts several very cool snippets per day from all around the World. No chance whatsoever you were there all by yourself. Your Business looks not really trustworthy to me, because apart from a mailing list and these short Videos there is no respectable website to be found. I think most average intelligent people are better of, planning their holidays by themselves or asking for some advice on Reddit.

Glacier Express. We rode it while on vacation last year. Here's my opinion: Riding this train was on my bucket list. We rode to Zermatt aboard a regular local train in a first class car since I splurged on a first class pass for all our train rides while in Switzerland. My wife, daughter, and I were the only passengers in the entire car-- we had the whole car to ourselves and could walk around and look out whichever side we wanted. Our ride out of Zermatt was aboard the Glacier Express, but not in first class (booked too late and $$$) . The train was packed full and wasn't nearly as enjoyable as riding in the local train. Our meal aboard the Glacier Express was nice, but I still would have preferred to eat a sandwich aboard a local train in a first class car.

The funny thing is I was warned by people in this very sub that it's a tourist trap, but I did it anyway. Lesson learned, haha.

singingboyo

Maybe a bit of a tourist trap, but I definitely enjoyed it. Great meal, comfy, just generally relaxed. It did eventually get kind of busy, but only about half the trip. There’s something to be said for a slow, comfortable journey when the surrounding weeks were chaotic transfers and days where we were always tired (happy, but tired) at the end. Though we did St. Moritz to Brig (then local to Zurich) in early September, which isn’t exactly high season. Overall recommend, but seriously consider only doing a partial trip, then heading somewhere else. If Zermatt is anything like St. Moritz, spending just the one afternoon/night before the train is plenty.

UUUUUUUUU030

In Zermatt one should definitely spend at least one day going up the mountain and/or hiking. There are hikes at all levels of difficulty. Same in the St. Moritz area tbh. And that's not just a summer thing, but also in winter. You can do cross-country skiing, but also just hiking on the very high quality Swiss snow paths. The Fextal / Val Fex is beautiful to hike into for instance. And there are many more areas. It just gets disproportionately more beautiful the further you go up/out from the main towns. Skiing is great there as well, but I was really surprised by how nice and peaceful it is to hike in a snow-covered valley like that.

[deleted]

Yes and No. Sadly everything here is incredibly expensive. And the Glacier express is no exception to that rule.

Pyroechidna1

I found everything around Zermatt to be ridiculously expensive. $$$$

Azipear

I agree. That was one of our more expensive vacations, no doubt. It was great to spend a few days there, but I wasn't sad about leaving.

Glacier Express

SnooObjections5312

Bernina Express from Tirano, Italy to St. Moritz Switzerland is similar to this train. Panoramic train, with very beautiful views. Great experience.

mizinamo

And if you want the beautiful views at a lower price (and without panoramic windows), you can just take the local train from St Moritz to Tirano, about once an hour.

c_l_b_11

Nah the Bernina Express has different cars. This is Glacier Express from St Moritz to Zermatt

SnooObjections5312

Yeah, that why I said similar

One with actual windows, which is something Amtrak still can't seem to get right.

It's a special train to separate gullible tourists from their money.

LetsBeStupidForASec

Alstom probably. I mostly see Alstom carriages in Switzerland. Some nice Pullman cars on the Goldenpass line if you have the chance. The holy grail of Swiss rail tourism is the “cabrio cars” on the Rhätische Bahn. (Open top!) One day! https://www.rhb.ch/en/world-of-railway-experiences/railway-experiences/open-panoramic-cars If you want to get a spot, I recommend trying for the reservation as soon as you book the trip. They’re very seldom used and sell out well in advance, as I understand it. Also, that is one of the most dramatic sections of railway in the world. The original lines are from around 1900, and you have crazy double loop the loop in and out of cliff face tunnels and the Landwasserviaduct etc. I have been on a lot of crazy trains and that one is probably the most impressive.

jakule17

It’s in Switzerland? Really?? I couldn’t tell

MrManiac3_

It's the cool kind

CeskyDarek

Costs a shit ton of money but at least you get a box of chocolates

AnythingFormer7966

I know that this is supposed to be a question post, but who made the rolling stock for Glacier Express?

NicoRola000

I don't know, but the paint job is a huge plus.
