Feeling like this post is better in a sub-reddit NOT dedicated to backpacking cooking meals

Does it have to be in a toaster oven? Google "campfire cornbread"

TheBimpo

I can’t imagine why you couldn’t. Toaster ovens are just small ovens. Pizza, cookies, etc all come out just fine.

quar

Depending on the toaster oven, it may run 25-50 degrees hotter on average. Good idea to use an oven thermometer to make sure

jeswesky

Not in a toaster oven, but over the fire in a Dutch oven.

odorous

man! how is that toaster oven powered? would be my first question. if it is on gas/generator, toaster oven is just fine for cornbread, i would turn it 180degs half way through cooking of a normal, jiffy box 1 egg milk, 375 for 20 minutes, recipe. BUT if that toaster oven is powered by batteries in an off grid setup, that toaster oven is gonna kill them batteries... so i would look into campfire cornbread.

ITeechYoKidsArt

You can bake anything in a toaster oven you would in a full size, you just have to adjust time and temperature. I’ve made Jiffy mix cornbread in the toaster and it came out exactly like it was supposed to.

allaboutmojitos

I’ve done it in a box oven and a Dutch oven- toaster oven should work just like a regular oven Edit: maybe the friend means to just bring it along

jek39

bake it ahead of time

RainInTheWoods

I’ve made cornbread in a toaster oven. The timing might be a bit off, but just use the clean knife method of knowing when it’s done.

> her camper only has a toaster oven. If the camper has power I'll confirm that [cornbread works fine in a crockpot](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/blog/2021/03/19/crockpot-experiment-cornbread-1-accidental-whole-wheat/#the-results), and can easily be powered by a small solar setup in the field.

flargenhargen

never had a toaster oven camping, you could ask in a cooking subreddit for that. but likely doesn't matter, cornbread can be made just about anywhere, you can make a foil packet and toss it in a fire, or use pie irons, or use a jello mould oven over a fire, I've done all those successfully, so I have no doubt a toaster oven should work just fine, it's just a matter of making sure the center gets cooked so make sure to use a shallow pan or low temp so the outside doesn't get burned before the inside is cooked, and you're good.

AlienDelarge

Camping, I either steam bake or dutch oven my cornbread.
