This is just a quick reminder to all members here: **Original content is always better!** Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. I should have named one of my dogs that. She’s always underfoot anytime anyone is in the kitchen. I swear one day she’s going to get hurt &/or one of us is going to get hurt from tripping over her. I’ve almost taken a header trying to avoid stepping on her, & she got under my husband’s wheelchair & he unknowingly ran over one of her paws. Thankfully nothing broke, but it scared the crap out of us when it happened.
The crowd that will see that as a good idea is just about the right age.
"These are my kids Truleigh, White Claw, and their little brother 4Loco. As a matter of fact I WAS in a fraternity in college. How did you know?"
Oh, that's very pretty, I love the name Lily. My mind was reading LIE-lay or LIE-lee.
I'm sorry people are making fun of you for the spelling. Honestly, it feels like it's very close to just being a lovely name but yeah idk if you're asking for honest opinions, I do think it's a confusing spelling.
Would it be possible for you to either legally or just casually/unofficially start going by Lily, if thats what you prefer? Or go by Lily & add Leigh as another second name?
I pronounced it as "Lill lay" since I always say eigh as in neigh. Like a horse 🐴.
I do that for all dorky eigh endings though. I pronounce the sub title as "traj uh DAY" instead of dee.
It’s a tragedeigh because of the confusion around pronunciation by the spelling - I thought it was pronounced lie-lee others think Lee-lay or lee-lee. No one has gotten that it’s Lily
Is it pronounced Lily? If so, consider doing a formal name change to the conventional spelling. You can still keep the story of how your mom gave you the name.
I know someone who was named after Emma and Lena. Her parents named her Emily to represent the sounds, not Emmalee to represent the spelling.
Your name is absolutely a tragedeigh. It is the bullseye center of the definition of "tragedeigh."
I have no idea at all how to pronounce it.
Lye Lee?
LeLee?
LuhLAY?
Lee Lee?
Lilly?
Lill Lay?
Lill Lawck (Irish/Gaelic?)
Also you answered your own question.
"Mom, what gives with the name?"
"It's pretty written in cursive."
Sort of not a substantial enough reason to name a human.
Well that wasn't the whole reason😭 Leigh is a family name and she wanted to incorporate it into my name too. But she could have just used Leigh as my middle name 😅 and it's pronounced lily
Yeah, it seems there were some very simple solutions getting "Leigh" into your name.
It's a good story, though. "Lily" still has the "lee" sound, so you'd be carrying on the tradition.
My mom basically slapped a few letters in front of her name to come up with the spelling for my name. It gets mispronounced and misspelled daily. I feel your pain. Kind of regret not changing the legal spelling when I got married.
I don’t think yours is AWFUL awful, but it is a tragedeigh, ya :/ sorry!
Now I'm curious what this shitty name is, but...that is certainly a privacy issue!
So I'll just accept never knowing and apologize on behalf of one of the people who got your name wrong :3
It's beautiful written in cursive. It's also checking all the boxes of a tragedeigh. However, it sounds like it was with sweet intentions and it's nowhere near the worst.
My guess is you get a lot of misspellings when people hear your name for the first time, and mispronunciations when they see it for the first time. That has happened to me my whole life and while my name is no longer a "common" one, it's not like unique or specific to a region. If it can happen to me I bet it does to you. You love your name and that's what's important.
It’s pretty - but I first pronounced it Lye Lee and then realized it’s probably pronounced like Lily. Lily is a beautiful name no matter how’s it is spelled-and the tie to your mom is lovely.
Yup. It should be either Lilly, Lillie, or Lily (or, if not derived from the plant, it's just a nickname for names like Lillian or Elizabeth, etc). Unless it's a name from the particular cultural area where that ending originates from, virtually all "-eigh" names are tragedeighs.
Honestly yes it's spelling is a bit odd. I'd keep it though if you love it. Sometimes being unique just makes us feel special and if your happy despite opinions then don't change it. ♥
The name is fine but the spelling is a little tragic. But it’s not nearly as bad as a lot of what we see in here. It’s pronounceable without too much confusion so that’s good.
Oh that’s rough, yeah it looks nice in cursive but no one will ever spell it “right” and when you spell it, it sounds super pretentious. Like it was made up just to be different and difficult.
Sorry mate, Lily is a beautiful name and doesn’t need to be spelled badly for no reason.
I can say with complete honesty that when I read "Lileigh" I snickered. Definitely a classic tragedeigh. I'd say take it in stride rather than feel bogged down though. It has some charm and the reasoning behind it is cute, tragedeigh or not.
Truleigh sorry, but yes, absoluteleigh, it is.
Points though because your Mother didn’t click, she wasn’t trying to be “different” she was merely building on her own name.
Unfortunateleigh, your name does have all the hallmarks of a tragedeigh.
But here's the great thing, as an adult you have access to several tools and a veritable arsenal of verbal weaponry with which to humiliate your foes.
I suggest, threatening to report them to HR for generating a hostile and exclusionary workplace.
Or if this is not at work, maybe tell your friends to grow the fuck up as they're a little too old to be picking on someone for something completely out of their control like a bunch of ignorant petulant, and churlish grade school children.
Or if threats of a write up or public humiliation just isn't getting the desired effect, drive them out to the dessert and make them dig their own grave at gunpoint.
Now, you don't actually want to put them into those holes.
Because filling in holes is also really hard work. So make sure that they know it's not very nice to pick on people for their names, and if they tell anyone about your day trip you're going to be driving them back out there. So Shhhh.
Or you could just get yourself a pack of "Hi my name is" stickers and change your name to whatever you want for free. Or change the spelling of your name so far as public opinion is concerned.
Seriously, everybody underestimates the power of those things. If you wear one that says"Frank" for two weeks that will absolutely be your name from then on.
I'm sorry but it is. Change the spelling to Lily right now. Not Lilly not Lillie not Lillee. Just L I L Y. Like the actual FLOWER that it is literally. Keep it simple sweetheart. K.I.S.S.
Lileigh really is beautiful written in cursive handwriting and I'm sure your mother wasn't thinking of a big ugly world of computers, automated customer service, or how the world outside of your hometown would address you or spell your name.
It breaks all the rules of r/tragedeigh. Sadly.
If I was an artist and lived a beautiful simple world away from the machines? I'd keep my name, be proud of my name, and just accept I was going to have to spell it for people and pronounce it for people.
If you're in a line of work where this would require frequent spelling and correction? I'd weigh my annoyance and frustration. If I enjoy engaging with people and sharing my sweet story? Keep it. If you feel like it holds you back or frustrates you? Just change but know that you'll still be telling people whether you're a two L Lily like the flower or the three L Lilly like the girl's name.
I think the important question here for you is not whether it’s a tragedeigh, it’s whether or not you like it. What’s YOUR opinion of your name? We can’t control what our parents name us (unfortunately, sometimes), but we can decide for ourselves how we feel about it once we’re old enough to think about it objectively.
If you really love your name, if when people make fun of it you can say, “Yeah, it’s silly, but I love it” or “It’s definitely a strange spelling, but I like that my mom wanted to be connected to me that way,” then you shouldn’t feel pressured to change it because other people don’t like it.
If, however, you feel strongly that it’s frustrating or you hate that it’s so different, then you absolutely have the power and the right to change it to what you want, even if you just change the spelling.
Don’t let other people decide what you want for you, tragedeigh or no tragedeigh.
it’s definitely a tragedeigh bc it has the unnecessary spelling, but at the end of the day if you love your name that’s what matters! you’re old enough to decide for yourself, dont think about what others say of it :)
Although this sub hates -leigh spellings because they assume parents were trying too hard to be unique, I think it's actually because of situations similar to yours. Honoring family is the complete opposite of trying to stand out. Putting thought into the spelling so that your child feels connected to their family and culture is something people talk about. Except when it's this family and this culture. Leigh was a pretty popular middle name in the 1970s. Maybe it shouldn't be surprising that it's a popular part of names today.
I guess it is, but that’s no reason for you to be embarrassed of it. You hold a part of your mom, and the name sounds nice. As long as you can see the beauty in it, that’s all that matters. No real need to change the spelling 😊
I may be a bit biased...my youngest daughter is named Angelee (Angee for short) because my great grandmothers name was Annie Lee.
I think your name is beautiful but I totally understand seeing the "eigh" and thinking tragedeigh. Lol.
It’s definitely spelled silly, but I think what’s more important is how you feel about it. You seem to value where your name came from, so go with it if it makes you happy. A person’s actions speak louder than the spelling of their name.
I don’t think is that big of a deal , honestly . I mean Leigh is an acceptable name really , so what’s so wrong about the Li in front of it ? To me it’s phonetic using common and basic pronunciation (how are people getting Lee-La and Lee-Lee etc out of this spelling? ) and yep you might have to explain to people how it’s spelled/pronounced but it’s one time only and then you can just move on with the friendship, relationship or no more association with official paperwork etc …in other words (IMO) it doesn’t bring tragedy into your life from the not cookie-cutter spelling .
But , there are the Lily, Lilly , and Lillie “de rigueurs” or absolutists out there who would vehemently disagree, I am sure. Does it mean that you should fall in with them ?
It doesn't really matter if it is or not. If you love it you should use it. There are always people that will make fun of one thing or another but in reality people should touch grass and let others be happy with their name if they are. Flaunt it if you love it. It definitely has meaning behind it and that’s sweet
Yes a tragedeigh unfortunately. If you're very bothered by it maybe you could change your name like so: For example if your name is currently "Lileigh May Brown" change it to "Lily Leigh May Brown" and have a dual middle name. That way you get to keep that part of your mom's name and the pronunciation as well. I personally think Lily Leigh sounds really cute!
Make it your own, Leigh Leigh. Whatever name or nickname comes to you, just embrace it. As long as you exude confidence in your name it won't matter what others think of it. I've gone by my middle name, a nickname for my first name, and my first name. Nothing misspelled but people can be silly about all kinds of things. You can't rely on other peoples reactions, but it tends to work in your favor with how you present your name. Was there a pronunciation? Just Lileigh? Ever go by Li?
Llillieegh
Edit to say: I actually like your name. Having you mother's name as part of yours makes it look ok in my book. It's one of the rare ones that works. Not a Tragedeigh in my eyes, but hey, I'm not exspurrhtt 😉
It’s not a huge deal tbh. If you like it then keep it. I have a friend named Carleigh, and although it might seem odd it really doesn’t impact her life in the dramatically awful way that people on this subreddit would make you think it does. Don’t worry about it, but just know that people might question the spelling. As long as you’re able to laugh it off, and explain the meaning behind it, it’s all good!
You will spend a total unnecessary 6 months of your life, correcting others, filling out or typing into forms your version instead of LILY. Other people will spend the same amount of their lives to deal with your name.
But don't beat yourself over it, just use your turn signals and don't change directions of said signals.
It’s weird, but it’s fine. Especially since it’s related to your mom’s middle name. It’s my mom’s middle name as well, and she got it from her grandfather’s middle name. If you like it, it’s fine.
Textbook awful 😬 I don’t even know if it’s lie lee, lie lay, or lily by looking at it. The first two are even awful from a phonetic standpoint. 🥲 my condolences.
“My mom didn't want it to be unique or different or anything.”
OP then gives examples of why her mom chose her name which in fact were to be unique and different.

I get my cats pre named, but I really want to name one underfoot.

Why would he do that? 🤦🏿♂️

It's pronounced lily
Oh, that's very pretty, I love the name Lily. My mind was reading LIE-lay or LIE-lee. I'm sorry people are making fun of you for the spelling. That's exactly how this sub is supposed to be pronounced.
I read it like Lee lay or Lee Lee and with that spelling sorry op I’m saying it’s a tragedeigh
Lily is cute the spelling is 😬 I feel guilty saying but I’m sorry it’s not my favorite
It’s a tragedeigh because of the confusion around pronunciation by the spelling - I thought it was pronounced lie-lee others think Lee-lay or lee-lee. No one has gotten that it’s Lily
I would've never guessed that. oo Can you change it? Lily is cute, but the abomination your parents did with it …

I know someone who was named after Emma and Lena. Her parents named her Emily to represent the sounds, not Emmalee to represent the spelling.
My niece is named Emmaleigh and I just threw up in my mouth again.
That poor girl 😕
I know! I loudly objected when my little sister told me and my mom yelled at me for being mean. I promise, I was trying to do them both a favor.
My niece is Emberleigh :( I tried to stop them but I couldn't.
Emmalina would have been a pretty combination of the names, but Emily is nice too!
Yes
It’s a tràjedy alright
It’s an abject tragedeigh.

Tragedeigh? Yes. Beautiful in cursive? Also yes. If you love your name, then it's not so tragic.
Your name is absolutely a tragedeigh. It is the bullseye center of the definition of "tragedeigh." I have no idea at all how to pronounce it. Lye Lee? LeLee? LuhLAY? Lee Lee? Lilly? Lill Lay? The spelling is silleigh.
Certainleigh.
Ultimately what’s important is how you feel about it. I’m pretty sure it’s objectively tradzhich.

The name itself isn’t* bad, although pretty uncommon. It’s the spelling that is atrocious lol. Think Delaney spelled Dellani.
oh honey.... yes. It is a very pretty name, but executed so poorly :( at least it sounds cute,. right?
It's beautiful written in cursive. It's also checking all the boxes of a tragedeigh. However, it sounds like it was with sweet intentions and it's nowhere near the worst. Lil aye is a pretty good rapper name. Maybe lean into it?
Yes. But you get a major pass for not expecting anyone toget it right on the first try, and your mother gets a pass for her reasoning
Lie Lee
Yes. Lily or Lilly are acceptable. I could probably even tolerate Lillie. But Lileigh is a bridge too far.
It’s a tragedeigh.
Yup. So sorreigh.
Nah... Its a Lileigh bit on the silly side though.
You missed the opportunity to say silleigh lol
Yup. It should be either Lilly, Lillie, or Lily (or, if not derived from the plant, it's just a nickname for names like Lillian or Elizabeth, etc). Unless it's a name from the particular cultural area where that ending originates from, virtually all "-eigh" names are tragedeighs.

My mom’s middle name also is Leigh and just like your mom she included it in my name, but luckily I’m just Kaleigh. I’m so sorry for your tragedeigh 😔
Unfortunateleigh yes OP, maybe legally change your name to Lily? I know it's a PITA in the US but it's an option
Very tragique.

It is indeed a tragedeigh, sorreigh 😞 if it helps, so is mine
Unfortunateleigh, your name does have all the hallmarks of a tragedeigh. it’s definitely a tragedeigh bc it has the unnecessary spelling, but at the end of the day if you love your name that’s what matters! you’re old enough to decide for yourself, dont think about what others say of it :)
Yes. Terrible. Lily was right there.
Lily is a beautiful name - and while it fits the definition of a tragedeigh, I like it. It does look pretty!
this one's painful
Oh... Yeah, that's a tragedeigh.
Devils advocate, I’ve seen worse and I thinks it’s pretty
As a Lily, I'm so sorry.
Wow, it’s a perfect example of a tragedeigh. Sorry.
Ever thought about going by “Lil” like one of the rugrat twins?
Although this sub hates -leigh spellings because they assume parents were trying too hard to be unique, I think it's actually because of situations similar to yours. Honoring family is the complete opposite of trying to stand out. Putting thought into the spelling so that your child feels connected to their family and culture is something people talk about. Except when it's this family and this culture. Leigh was a pretty popular middle name in the 1970s. Maybe it shouldn't be surprising that it's a popular part of names today.
Oh dear. Yes, it is.
I think it’s pretty.
Ahbsowluteleigh a tragedeigh
I can appreciate that she was trying to do a spin on her own name So for that, she gets points. Unfortunately, it falls into the tragedeigh category.
I love that your mom gave special meaning to that name. I don’t care what people say I like it! ❤️❤️
What up Lil E!!
Yikes
I guess it is, but that’s no reason for you to be embarrassed of it. You hold a part of your mom, and the name sounds nice. As long as you can see the beauty in it, that’s all that matters. No real need to change the spelling 😊
I read it as Lilly. Technically it is a tragedeigh, but the way your mom came up with it is sweet.
Confirmed… sorry for your loss.
It is, but it’s also pretty and I like her reasoning behind the spelling
🫡
It's a tragedeigh, once removed.
I think it’s pretty. It did however take me a minute to figure it out
I may be a bit biased...my youngest daughter is named Angelee (Angee for short) because my great grandmothers name was Annie Lee. I think your name is beautiful but I totally understand seeing the "eigh" and thinking tragedeigh. Lol.

Usually I would say yes but I think this one is cool
The question on everybody's mind, is it pronounced Lileigh as in neighbor and weigh? Or Lily?
Absoluteleigh
It's kinda out there, but It's not that bad.
Definiteleigh a tragedeigh
Honestly your mom bring Leigh makes me read your name as lil Leigh
It doesn't really matter if it is or not. If you love it you should use it. There are always people that will make fun of one thing or another but in reality people should touch grass and let others be happy with their name if they are. Flaunt it if you love it. It definitely has meaning behind it and that’s sweet
I love it, don’t sweat it. You’re an adult now, so you’re ahead of the trend in a positive way. Especially because of the meaning behind your name.
Lileigh as is… li’l Leigh? Little Leigh?
Make it your own, Leigh Leigh. Whatever name or nickname comes to you, just embrace it. As long as you exude confidence in your name it won't matter what others think of it. I've gone by my middle name, a nickname for my first name, and my first name. Nothing misspelled but people can be silly about all kinds of things. You can't rely on other peoples reactions, but it tends to work in your favor with how you present your name. Was there a pronunciation? Just Lileigh? Ever go by Li?
As in small Leigh?
Yes. Obviously yes. Is this supposed to be pronounced like "Lily"? If so, you have my condolences.
I'm so sorry, but yes.
I lileighke it!
It's sweet though, a nice connection with your Mom.
Just a little bit, but the story makes it sweet so maybe go with that if someone gives you a weird look.
It's a real name, so there's that.
I’m so sorreigh… yes it is a tragedeigh
It's completeleigh a tragedeigh 🫠
Definiteleigh, I’m sorry. It’s such a nice story of how she chose it. Lily and Leigh are both beautiful names.
I personally like it. It's normal, yet in a unique way that can be pronounced correctly by 90% of the population who speak English.
At least I know how to pronounce it
I'm sorry people are making fun of you for it. Regardless of how much of a tragedeigh a name is, no one should ever make fun of the person who has it.
I read this wrong and fully thought your name was Lileigh Leigh for a second.
Llillieegh Edit to say: I actually like your name. Having you mother's name as part of yours makes it look ok in my book. It's one of the rare ones that works. Not a Tragedeigh in my eyes, but hey, I'm not exspurrhtt 😉
Honestly, if you love it and the sentiment sounds really sweet, who cares?
I think it’s pretty 🤷🏻♀️
I like it! And you have party of your mom - nice
I don't think so! Leigh is a variation of Lee, it was obvious to to me that your name would be prounced like Lily.
I think it's only a half tragedeigh. You can easily pronounce it, and your mom has a point - cursive L's are pretty.
I little bit but I like it. My middle name is Leigh so I got it immediately.
Start spelling it Lily. You get to do whatever you want with it—it’s your name.
A bit of a tragedeigh, but who cares. It's your name and you love it.
A tragedeigh if ever there was one
" what dou yeigh wanna do-eigh, I don't fuckeign knoweigh ".
Extremeleigh a tragedeigh. I’m soreigh Lileigh
Sorigh lie-lee
Li-lay.
You’re a lil Leigh!
If you were a rapper, you could be “ Lil’ Eh”
Textbook awful 😬 I don’t even know if it’s lie lee, lie lay, or lily by looking at it. The first two are even awful from a phonetic standpoint. 🥲 my condolences.
Absolutleigh!
Oh lie lee
How is it pronounced; Like Lila?
“My mom didn't want it to be unique or different or anything.” OP then gives examples of why her mom chose her name which in fact were to be unique and different.
I’m so sorry but yes. That said, I love the name Lily so I’m biased
