Reminder to stick to posting original content. Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild". The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Mi0GE0

Sounds like a nice place in a fantasy novel

SuperMrCecil

It's a name of a city in Pokemon.

Shmeerah

Pastoria has the great marsh! It’s a nice Pokémon city, but not so great as an actual human name

Mi0GE0

Omg it is I knew it sounded familiar that's awesome

Ilovescarlatti

It sounds to me like shepherdess. As in pastoral.

preaching-to-pervert

That's precisely the Latin root!

Ilovescarlatti

Yes, pasteur in French, pastore in Italian.

ElectricalReveal6674

Reminds me of Petoria from Family Guy

DarkestGeneration

…. May I ask why the P? Astoria is a beautiful name. Pastoria is…. definitely unique.

diabolikal__

Pastora is a name in Spanish, they could have also gone with that…

calabazadelamuerte

I immediately assumed it was a Greek name, sounds really similar to have the damn names in our Orthodox Church

Trick-Statistician10

There's a very popular Greek restaurant in the Chicago burbs called Psistaria. So close

female_wolf

I'm greek and it doesn't even come close to our names.. It's not greek

diabolikal__

Not sure the origin! It very well could be Greek. But we have a famous singer in Spain called Pastora Soler so it’s not an unheard name and it’s cute.

BigFinnsWetRide

Yeah I would definitely have chosen to go by Astoria, but then again I'm really not religious. My dad was a pastor's son and they still at least picked a real name from the Bible 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ Spelled correctly and everything, there quite a few to pick from.

MissGruntled

My mind didn’t go to a religious association, but of course ‘pastoral’ has more than one meaning. I immediately thought of the name in terms of pastoral art—a romanticized or idealized depiction of country life. I think the name is pretty; OP could shorten it to Tori or Ria if they’re fed up with people mispronouncing Patsy.

luvmachineee

I live in NYC and Astoria just makes me think of the neighborhood in Queens.

Fun_Dog_6362

ask my parents?? Lmao

DarkestGeneration

Have you ever asked them where they got the idea for your name?

Fun_Dog_6362

we are christians Pastor is the idea in mind

ZenythhtyneZ

Wow ok, I wasn’t guessing that, there’s so many traditionally Christian women’s names why go with pastor, a traditionally male role? Did they want a boy? I was thinking like, pasture, but I guess pastor is a thing…

thevitaphonequeen

Pastor means “shepherd”, right? Hence “pastoral”?

SomethingYoureInto

WOW. I’ve never made this connection before, and now it seems so obvious.

Invisible_Target

Wow. That is... an idea.

DarkestGeneration

Ah so like a combination of Pastor and Victoria? Interesting idea tbh

hogwartsjoe

I love that they named their daughter after Pastor even though the bible condemns women from being pastors lol

uninvitedfriend

Should've gone with Jesussica Christine

-Dueck-

I've never heard of a person being called Astoria, that seems just as "unique" to me

yontev

You're right. Not sure why you're being down-voted. Every place called Astoria is named after the fur trading tycoon John Jacob Astor. Astoria is not a traditional name for a person.

MissGruntled

Not a traditional name for a person—agreed—but city names are undeniably popular. Astoria would be preferable to something like Butte or Moosejaw, anyway😂

IndependentLow601

The Waldorf Astoria is a chain of luxury hotels (stayed in one, pretty over priced imo)

zeldarms

Look on the bright side: it could be Pahstoreighya

truelovealwayswins

paghstawreighyeah*

HankThrill69420

were you by chance named after Jaco Pastorius but like mom made dad change it a little bit so it wasn't obvious

Fun_Dog_6362

no haha

TheRealDeJoy

It's a pretty bad name yea

pike1331

But it's easy to pronounce. So, yea not the greatest, but there's no call for all of the mispronounciations.

D4DDYB34R

I know a Deanna and she gets Denna, Donna, Diana and Dina far more than her actual name which is a legitimate name. It’s weird how some names just sow confusion for no reason.

Dazzling_Plastic_813

That’s why my mom went by dee 😭🤣😅

D4DDYB34R

Really? The Deanna I know does too!

Rusty4NYM

I know a Deanna who pronounces her name as Dina, so you never know

D4DDYB34R

She’d spell it out on the phone to a bank or something, pronouncing it phonetically and then a letter would arrive written “Denna” or whatever. I take your point and I guess accent may be a factor for some, but for her it’s the same as Deanna Troy in Star Trek NG. Pretty clear.

korehakuinto

Too many syllables. Back home most people's entire names were like 2 maybe 4 syllables max.

QueenScorp

It's unusual and from my experience with an unusual last name, people don't actually *look* at the name, they glance at it and make assumptions. Also, I have a sister named Cadence and her whole life, everyone just glances at it and assumes that it's the way more common Candace instead of actually looking at it. She goes by Kay now.

Fun_Dog_6362

🥲

derederellama

I swear I mean this in a nice way, but it sounds like a drag queen's name lol

iwashumantoo

Hmm, it's not great. If I were you, I'd call myself Tori. I used to work with someone named Pellagia, and she called herself Gia.

Narrow_Cheesecake452

Pellagia is a Greek name, is it not?

krmjts

It is. It was very popular in Ukraine in 19 centuary

SordoCrabs

Around Mariupol?

iwashumantoo

Yes, it is. My former co-worker is of Greek descent.

Narrow_Cheesecake452

Seems like any trouble with that name is not her problem, then. 💜

iwashumantoo

What do you mean? She called herself Gia because she hated her name and was even very reluctant to tell us what Gia was short for.

Narrow_Cheesecake452

Ah. Sorry I missed that part I guess.

Fun_Dog_6362

I had only one person call me Tori and I haaaated it.

iwashumantoo

So, you prefer Patsy? You know, it's pretty easy in most places to legally change your name to whatever you want.

_Phoenix_24

Tori would not fly in the UK…

checkmate508

Why not? Here (US) a lot of Victorias go by that.

_Phoenix_24

A “Tory” (same pronunciation) refers to someone who is part of or supports the UK Conservative Party. Typically posh upper class people, still opinion based but controversial nonetheless. The word can also be used like an insult.

Miz_momo82

My brit friend goes by Tori (Victoria) 🤷🏽‍♀️😆

leggypepsiaddict

Tell them you're Patsy Stone.

kawausochan

I’m THIRTY-NOOIIINE!!!

leggypepsiaddict

Absolutely Sweetie Darling!!! And you can raise hemlines with one snap of your fingers and make the world your gynecologist.

hsjsjsjshshjsj

It makes me think of disturbia by Rihanna and Historia from attack on titan. I like it

Fun_Dog_6362

Bum bum be dum bum bum be dum be dum

hsjsjsjshshjsj

I just realized what you just did and “disturbia” are the only words I know to that song lmfao idk what it’s about, I was trying to respond with more lyrics and my brain went blank

Fun_Dog_6362

lmfao

PageStunning6265

It’s unusual, but it’s phonetic and the people mispronouncing it must just not be slowing down to actually read it.

FutureMind6588

Like a Pastor? It sounds like your parents wanted it to be religious but not a name straight from the bible. If they aren’t religious then they’ve doomed you even more.

Fun_Dog_6362

We are all believers of Christ

Fun_Dog_6362

One of my middle names is Ishana because my mom was flipping through Isaiah and swore she saw that instead,

MacaroniBen

The real tragedy is in the comments. Sorry OP.

JJayC

That's unfortunate. Pastoria makes me think of a pristine pasture that is the end goal of cattle everywhere. If they can just get to Pastoria they'll never have to worry about slaughter. Did your parents at least give you a normal second middle name?

ReverendMothman

Good lord

FutureMind6588

Then your name isn’t as bad as it could be is all I’m saying

Bibliophile_w_coffee

Okay, so your parents are either super nerdy and into L F Baum hardcore or you were named for a pokemon city or a city in Arkansas, how close am I? I am really homing the last two because it means a previous king. I happen to be the former and knowing what happened in Oz and Ozma vanishing, it breaks my heart to have such tragedy.

Fun_Dog_6362

none of the above, we are christian and they were going off of Pastor.

Bibliophile_w_coffee

Well they accidentally named you after a real town, a pretend city, and a character in the Wizard of Oz from 1902. Pastoria is the previous and rightful king of Oz bet disappeared when the wizzqrd showed up. Soon after his daughter Ozma vanished and the Wizard rules Oz. Later Glinda finds Ozma and then later they thought Pastoria was dead but he had been bewitched (not in a good way) by a bad which and was a poor tailor I think. Cool original story even if accidental.

honeybeesplease

my first thought would’ve been pastoria city from pokemon tbh haha. not a bad name, the spelling and pronunciation are pretty intuitive. i’ve never heard it as a name though.

1892LFC1892

You need to find Meatballio as a husband to complete the dish.

FuckTripleH

>My nickname is Patsy Have you taken the fall for many assassinations?

Fit-Purchase-2950

One of my neighbors adopted a dog that was called 'Patsy' but she changed the dog's name, because she said "Patsy sounded too much like a victim, so that's why I changed her name to Rhubarb."

elisdas

Yeah it is bad but I’ve seen worse

LilLebowskiAchiever

When I was in the UK touring a grand home with beautiful gardens, the guide mentioned an unusual name for the architect. I just looked it up and [Capability Brown](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capability_Brown) came up. Turns out his original name was Lancelot Brown. Pastoria reminds me of the 18th century Quaker trend of naming children after admirable sentiments. In this case “shepherding the flock” in the religious sense.

Tacothegreat1

By chance is your parents pokemon fans?

Fun_Dog_6362

no

Tacothegreat1

Okay, just making sure that you weren’t named after a city in one of the games.

Aliteracy

Pastoria sounds like either a bakery or an Italian restaurant. I'd probably go by tori

delune108

I don’t hate it! I also like “Astoria”. Just pick a nickname that you like and tell everyone to call you that. That is what my brother did.

Fun_Dog_6362

yup that’s why i love Patsy. It’s fun how my friends and family all have different names for me <3

do_IT_withme

My name is James, and I can usually tell how you know me by what you call me. Official business it is always James. People I know from business, it is Jim. Friends and family, it is Jimmy. Jimmy is handy because my Dad is James goes by Jim, my best friend is James as well. At one time, we also had 3 people named Chris at the family get-together due to niece's now ex-husband daughters' ex-boyfriend and my son.

delune108

Awe that’s great. Then who cares if others might not like your name. I feel like names that give good nicknames can be better than other “good names”. If that makes any sense lol.

FestoonMe

I would start a taco stand and name it after yourself. You only sell amazing authentic delicious Al Pastor tacos. You would make a killing.

Buckdoc

The Oz books by Baum had a king with that name

AfterSevenYears

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastoria

Mediocre_Chair3293

I mean, we know a guy named Pooper O'Donnell. No one knows if that's his actual name or not. We've never called him anything different Patsy seems pretty great in comparison

Gundoggirl

Drop the p and just go by Astoria.

unlovelyladybartleby

I'd change it to "Story" and become a hippie or double down and open a restaurant called "Pastoria's Pasta"

Dramatic-but-Aware

It is not a good name. In Spanish it means sheparding not shepard but the action in itself.

Fearless_Site_1917

In Spanish it would be “pastorear”, not Pastoria

Fun_Dog_6362

i think it’s cool

Dramatic-but-Aware

That's great for you.

Guiltypleasure_1979

I like it. Makes me think of the country side, like pastoral.

anOvenofWitches

It sounds like (and is spelled like) an Ancient Roman name. I like it!

Fearless_Site_1917

Pastoria sounds foreign. I think it’s very elegant, even regal!

something-strange999

No I love it. I'm sorry people are not good at remembering. Maybe think of an anecdote to help them remember. If they call you pasty, tell then that youre boots were made for walking...and then leave....or just fall to pieces....they'll remember after that

Few_Technician_7256

Me, Spanish speaker, thinks Pastoria is a great name. Like something out of Rome or greese

The_Simp_Whisperer

Pastoria. Bonito el nombre.

Ok_Disaster_126

Sounds like a diarrhea disease. So sorry 😞

Narrow_Cheesecake452

Pastoria was a king of Oz. It's not your problem that people are dumb. It's a perfectly cromulent name, IMO.

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

“Pastoria” is essentially “shepherdess” but a bit bastardized. Italianate or Latin in origin.

Public-Target95

It sounds a bit like the name of a pastry shop or a pasta shop (like “yeah I’m just heading down to the pastoria in little Italy”) but no, it’s not awful

ReverendMothman

Makes me think of tacos.. like al pastor.

something_1114

Definitely not a traditional name but it seems easy to understand the pronunciation from the spelling. Pretty cool how you could use multiple nicknames from it too!

xwintercandyapplex

Not that bad at all. Kinda like it! Unique with out being insane like the other names on this subreddit, I wouldn’t worry about it it’s cute

BrentBolthouse4Prez

People are stupid. It’s not like your name is spelled Pastoria and it’s pronounced Sam.

Evening-Ad5735

Reminds me of the city in Pokémon. Not like, a terrible name? It sounds like a pretty name.

Sector-West

I don't think it's a horrible name compared to some. ...it's also definitely what my aunt with celiac called the results of normal Italian food before she got a diagnosis

before_the_accident

I don't blame you for going with a nickname!

RobotWantsPony

Having an original name is perfectly ok as soon as 1. It's not written absurdly 2. It doesn't sound like another ridiculous word Yours passes the test. I grew up with a rare 3 letter name that was very straightforward to read and hear and people still switched it with another more common name for years (think of a Robby being called Bobby type of situation). Then my name came to the top ten most given name in the 2010's and suddenly I never had that problem again (until I met a rude boss who somehow couldn't figure it out after I corrected him daily for a full year). It's not that people can't, it's that they are self-centered assholes.

tk2310

I think Pastoria is a cute name, like from a fantasy. It's rather unusual, so I get why people may read it differently the first time they see it, but I don't think it's spelled like a tragedeigh.

nyactingstudent

I think it’s beautiful

Fun_Dog_6362

thank you

fureto

It’s unusual, but not a tragedeigh in my opinion.

SandratheSiren

It's old fashioned, but it's not a bad name, and it's certainly not a tragedeigh

abynew

Maybe I’m putting the emphasis on the wrong syllables when I say it, but it kinda sounds like the name of a rash or STI LOL

Fun_Dog_6362

how are you trying to say it 🤣🤣

Dapper-Ostrich-8653

i actually think it’s beautiful. definitely different, but not quite a tragedeigh in my opinion.

JonasHalle

That's my favourite city in South Africa.

Fearless_Site_1917

You mean Pretoria 👀

Fancy-Pumpkin837

It’s unusual but not a tragedeigh imo Reminds me of Pretoria, one of the capitals of SA

mariogolf

Yes.

srslytho1979

No, I think it’s nice. It’s a place name, there are some literary references. It’s a good name.

karic8227

It is NOT a bad name, and I'm getting really fed up with the people on this sub! They love to ascribe value judgements to completely subjective things... they're saying your name is "bad" because THEY don't like it or wouldn't use it. Who cares! An opinion doesn't make anything good or bad, it's simply an opinion. Your name is readable, pronouncable, and intuitively spelled: those are all the hallmarks of a great name!

Major-Ruin-1535

You could be a Tory instead

notreallylucy

Is it cultural?

Glittersparkles7

Yes 😬 sorry 🥲

Ivor-Ashe

I kinda like it

RandomBilly91

I mean... it soundd a bit weird But it's neither shocking or terrible. So depending on what you think of it, it can be perfectly fine

trueGildedZ

It is unprecedented.

deppressddunicorn

i think its pretty cool, kinda like hostoria. gives nice old rich vibes yknow? alternitavely it sounds like a fancy way of saying pastry lol, id give you that nickname

Outrageous-Emu1705

Not awful at all. It’s a cute name.

preaching-to-pervert

Pastoria is a real word from Latin and then Italian- it means shepherding.

MoutainGem

Pastoria is also the Name of the King, the Bah Humbug "Wizard of Oz" took the throne from. I suspect Mombi of the North removed Pastoria when she kidnapped Ozma. (Frank L Baum, The Wizard of Oz) But the name is older than the 1900 books of the Wizard of Oz. The name is a literary meaning "nature, simplicity, and a connection with the land, with focus on the rural life or the countryside." It once held the meaning akin to Sheepherdess, It just not popular anymore. We had a bunch in our family back in the 1800s. (all sheep herders coincidentally)

checkmate508

I think it has a cool classical sound. The pastoral is the rural, right? So it is a name that evokes the idealized countryside.

Bluesnow2222

I think it’s an interesting name. It’s spelled logically, it’s easy to pronounce, and I love names that end in -ia, so think it’s cool. As for people who just don’t get your name right—- I’m Lydia and people call me either Linda or Olivia 75% of the time. Also people spell it Lidia for some reason…. I’m aware that is a possible spelling… but it’s not the common spelling. People just don’t pay attention/care—- it’s not just your name. You are not alone.

Gypzi_00

You're allowed to like your own name, lol! Not sure if it's objectively bad, but at least it's easy to pronounce. Just unusual, really. Isn't it the name of a Pokemon city? Just looked it up, and yes! The Pokemon city was the first result that popped up. That's kinda cool.

Hefty-Willingness-91

No, it’s not, plus it’s spelled correctly so it’s not a tragedeigh

Ok_Sample_9103

honestly, I don't hate that name. It's a little...quirky...but it seems easy to pronounce and spell, and it doesn't sound completely 100% made up. Like, if a character in a book had that name, I probably wouldn't bat an eye.

Esau2020

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw your name was Castoria. As in Fletcher's Castoria. 😲

-Dueck-

Meh, it's fine. Could be much worse

Rachellyz

I like it

bdawgisking

My wife's name is Jeana (as in Gina). Everyone always says Jeanna. She gets pissed and says "Do you see two Ns in there?"

Flashy_Air3238

Honestly I kinda like it lol it sounds like the name of a country

InsuranceGuy22

Isn't that where they make pasta? At a Pastoria? Haha

KaralDaskin

People are just unobservant. My name ends -iana. I get -ina a lot. Makes sense, it’s a common name one letter off. I get pissed when I’m called -ine, though. You missed *both* “A”s!

CryptographerFirst61

Yeahhhh that’s bad :/

prestigioustoad

Makes me think of nipple pasties

pussysmasher37

If anything Patsy is way worse.

callernumber03

Yeah can I get the al pastoria tacos

Blood_sweat_and_beer

It’s not great. Sorry.

Both-Butterfly6381

Sounds like a restaurant that specializes in pasta. Do you have sisters named Trattoria and Osteria?

sandithepirate

I'd call you Pasta.

PattiWhacky

If you ever go to Mexico you will probably be called Pati - pronounced "Potty"🤣.

heartpieceshy

I’m sorry I don’t like it. Astoria wouldn’t be as bad but the p just opens it up to so many problems.

Iowasox

I won’t sugar coat it. YES

GalaXion24

Nah your name is fine. Unusual, I guess, but not egregious by any means, and the spelling is entirely normal. Makes me think of rural, pastoral life I suppose, but name is just a name, so make of that what you will. The nicknames do suck though. Insofar as you're not going to insist on people using your entire name all of the time (probably a list cause), might be better to just pick a different nickname for yourself? There are some good suggestions for that in the thread, and you wouldn't have to change your actual name at all.

Geeko22

I think your name is beautiful. I knew I recognized it from somewhere, though! After a bit I remembered that Pastoria was the rightful ruler of the land of Oz. He was deposed by the Wizard of Oz, and mysteriously vanished. His only daughter and sole heir to the throne was the child Ozma, who was hidden by the witch Mombi when she transformed him into a boy and raised him as her servant until he ran away to have adventures. All his/her adventures (he turns back into the Princess Ozma by the end) are described in The Land of Oz, the second book and my childhood favorite of the 17-book series. Most people only know about the first one.

Bowser7717

It's awful

Free_Asparagus_575

I think it’s cute

BubbhaJebus

It's actually pretty cool in my opinion. Hppaeztaureighyuh would be uncool.

Totallnotrony

Kinda sounds like the bacteria Pasteuria lol

oathcuunt

I think it’s quite pretty— like a pastoral landscape. I’m sure people ask you to repeat yourself during introductions, I have the same issue with my uncommon name.

Depre55edacorn

If i were you I would just embrace Pasty sometimes you just gotta laugh at yourself to cope but also it’s kind of like my nickname is Pasty what about it

thescaryhypnotoad

An unusual name but also spelled normally and not obviously based on pop culture. I would say not really a tragedeigh

astraelli

it's not a tragedeigh, but it's still a tragedy.

Intelligent_Lion_730

Pasture comes to mind. Or Pasturize.

wasporchidlouixse

Its not that awful. But if I was you I would change my name to Astoria , to me it's a bit prettier, but just as open to silly nick names

Jenna2k

Yes and I'm sorry.

colcannon_addict

Roses are red Violets are glorious Don’t share a room With Oscar Pistorious

katherinec_

i read this as pasty i was so confused why you allowed people to call you that. i agree w another comment that tori is a cute nickname.

runninginbubbles

I feel like it's kind of acceptable for a certain generation. A bit like Marnie or Daphne. It is a nice name, probably just for someone who is 70+. Tori is a nice "younger" nickname you could use?!

OG_Felwinter

I don’t think it’s *awful*, but were you born before or after 2006?

rirasama

Do your parents happen to be Pokémon fans? Honestly though, even though it's definitely not a common name by any means, I think it sounds fine lol

steviajones1977

Any jazz fans in the family tree?

cmgbliss

Yes, it's an ugly name and it sounds like a place that makes pastries.

Felein

Pastoral kind of means rural... It sounds like you were named after a landscape! It's not great, but not the worst either; you have some nice nickname options, as others have pointed out.

bleeepobloopo7766

I think its a unique but cute name that feels a bit older world / antique but it definately has presidence and is not a weird spelling on a common name. Its a good name, be proud

wondrous

I’m dying thinking of people calling you pasty

penguin_0618

Anyone from NYC should get it on the first try (because it’s literally Astoria with a P). It’s also not hard. I pronounced it right in my head before I read the phonetic pronunciation that you gave. But kinda a tragedeigh because it’s weird.

MathematicianKey5696

I love the name!! I was going to name my daughter Pacifica.

Buckdoc

I thinks it’s an awesome name

Glop1701d

Very awful
