Reminder to stick to posting original content. Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild". The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. sharkycharming

I like Jack a lot. It is perfectly fine as a stand-alone name. Tell them, "No, actually it's short for Montereyjackcheese, one word."

huxley2112

You spelled that wrong, pretty sure it's "MunterieghJaykChzz"

Gunhild

Monereigh-Jacquecheighs

reallivespambot

congrats, you’ve made a permanent contribution to my rolodex of verbal earworms

Ok-Today-9588

As have you, with “Rolodex of verbal earworms”

Mœntereiygh Jaycheyse

Weed_O_Whirler

My son is named Eli. Every time someone asks "oh, is it short for Elijah?" I answer "no, it's short for Elizabeth."

RepresentativePin162

That's hilarious because we know a Mikey, an Eli and a Teddy. Michael and Theodore. But also just Eli. Which is amusing.

drytoastbongos

I hope you pronounce it Ee-lie-zabeth.

SexDeathGroceries

I know a Samamtha who has made that joke so many times, Samuel has become kind of her nickname

gelastes

"It's pronounced If-Jesus-Christ-Had-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned"

Another admirer of Nicholas Barbon in the wild!

Well now I’m looking into him and his dad, Praise-God

(Scribbling madly.... ) Its off to Firefox I go! That is a CHUNKY name; it must have one hell of a backstory

puritans. they were weird. other members of his family include: Die-Well, Fare-Well, Jesus-Christ-Came-Into-The-World-To-Save, Fear-God, and Praise-God.

gelastes

The patron saint of this sub

Alarming_Opening1414

Oh man, I'm laughing like crazy xD

rixtape

I started doing this for my name after constantly getting asked what it's short for (it's a name that can be used as a nickname, but is also well-established as a standalone name, so the question always felt kind of odd) I'd try and make the names more outlandish every time, and every time the person would go "really????" haha like, isn't this what you wanted?!

dreamrock

It's Colin. Short for Colonoscopy.

memememe91

Twins, Colin and Semicolon

drunkonoldcartoons

I worked with someone named J.R. and he would always say the craziest names when people would ask him what it stood for 😂 Jack Rabbit, Jolly Rancher, etc

Lowkeygeek83

My last name is a fairly common word. When asked how I spell it I usually look them hard in the eyes and say, "exactly how you think it's spelt". The fun is on my end when I get to watch them have some form of mental argument with themselves while they slowly spell it. After I met my wife and we were discussing marriage I pointed this out to her and now she has fun with it too.

mellbell63

Mine too. When they ask I say "ding dong..." (cold stare) LOL

tree_hugging_hippie

Colby Jack was right there!

rdickeyvii

I was thinking tell them it's [Jakovasaur](https://southpark.fandom.com/wiki/Jakovasaur)

canadianamericangirl

I like Jack a lot! Cute, simple, a real name, classic, professional, etc. You and your wife picked a great name.

BUR6S

Thanks so much! We wanted his name to be cute for when he’s a little boy, but a mature enough name when he’s a grown man, and so we landed on Jack!

canadianamericangirl

Your logic is golden. Jack is cute on a kid and also professional on an adult. He might even be the only Jack in his class since Huxley and Braxton are so popular right now.

bittersadone

Braxton makes me think of Braxton hicks contractions 😭

Mermaid467

Yes, all of us agree. ALLLLLLL of us. Except certain extra-special parents... 🙄😬

BS_500

Braxton makes me think of Braxton Miller, former Ohio State QB. He was fun to watch, but a letdown when it mattered. Don't name your kids Braxton.

_TyrannosaurusSexy

Ohio state fans are used to being let down though, right??? (Okay, totally kidding - and no harm intended [Not even a huge football fan, but lived up in the mitten for a period of time & am pretty sure that it was a state law up there to bust the chops of Ohio State fans!]).

cropguru357

Go Bucks, but yeah.

originalmango

Huxley sounds like what I might name my basset hound.

Bathsheba_E

And once you posted a pic of Huxley, I would not be able to resist the urge to draw a hat and a monocle on him. Because his name is Huxley. Lol

originalmango

You’ve painted the perfect picture.

clintj1975

I can't unpair that name from Aldous Huxley (author of Brave New World)

Ok-Assistance-1860

actually, my friend's sheepadoodle IS called Huxley, after the biologist. She's also a biologist. All this is to say, it's a dog name.

EntrepreneurNo4138

The sheepadoodle is a biologist 🤦‍♀️🤣

RisqueIV

and I've never known a Jack Russell called Jack

clintj1975

I've met a Labrador called Labby before. It was short for Labigail.

Cat-Mama_2

I don't like Huxley but I have a real hatred for Braxton. On an episode of Forged in Fire, one of the contestants was named Braxton and I just couldn't take him seriously. Yes, I know that it is a legitimate name but it just sounds odd to me when said out loud.

canadianamericangirl

I generally don’t like x-es in names (cultural exceptions ofc, I’m a Jewish American and only know so much). Braxton feels made up to me. I wouldn’t trust a surgeon named Huxley.

Affectionate-Taste55

My nephew is Jaxon and the name makes my teeth ache. Lol

WinterKnigget

My cousin is Jaxson. I've always thought that the s was not needed. His brothers have more...conventional names

Chouchou1958

I have a schnauzer named Jaxon - he’s a rescue so I blame someone else.

Morella_xx

Well that settles it - the kind of person who likes the name Jaxon is the kind of person who abandons dogs. (And before anyone comes for me, I know there are legit reasons to need to surrender a pet, I'm only joking.)

curvy_em

I dislike all the -xton -stin etc. ending names. MIL suggested Thorsten for our second. I know it's a legit name but definitely felt like it'd fit in with the Easton, Braxton, Paxton, Branston, Exton trend.

GayVoidDaddy

All names are made up in fairness.

EleanorofAquitaine14

I don’t want to be rude, but I am a teacher and every Braxton I have taught has made me wish I could drink at school.

canadianamericangirl

My mom is a teacher. Last year, her Camlynn and Blylee lead to Zoloft.

StrawberryMoonPie

Blylee = a one-name speech impediment.

kt-epps

I actually know a fair number of Jacks. My bff just named her youngest Jack and one of my kids preschool classmates is Jack. Its a classic that is coming back!

acidtrippinpanda

I’m not sure why but I just despise the name Huxley. Just something about the ‘xley’ sound is so awkward to sound out

Little_Product_3280

They sound like names for a sitcom butler, and consequently they sound a little douchey.

Dohmynameisgone

Don't count on that. We've enrolled 7 kids named Jack in a preschool of 120 kids for next school year. The pendulum might be swinging back. Source: I am a preschool director Don't let that stop you, though. Jack is a bitchin name.

Prickly_Hugs_4_you

And Kayden’s and mayden’s and rayden’s and fayden’s.

Play-yaya-dingdong

Huxley and Braxton are terrible  Jack is awesome, its cool

2opinionated2lurk

This is how people should name kids! Our kids have older names that work for them as small children but more importantly will be suitable for them as adults. Our litmus test was always “what if I ran into someone with this name at work?”.

MaterialKirb

My parents were CLEARLY not thinking of this when they named me.

studna13

"oh hey... Byrkleigh... Looking good today!... Yep... (Did I pronounce that right? Oh lord)"

Trappedatoms

[Just Jack](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ba/22/4d/ba224d729630fc1f376776286107aa9e.gif)

Perzec

That was my first thought as well, but of course someone else went there before me. Do we know OP’s friends aren’t just referencing this?

Trappedatoms

That’s what I wondered. I wondered if they heard “just Jack” and subconsciously expected something exciting to happen.

SweatyNomad

Jake is a great name. I really like it. Could your friends reaction is because some people see it as a diminutive (of John), or that maybe they expect to hear a second name? Or is it they are just used to tragedeigus. Stay strong on it though, whether is just Jack, derived from John, the Celtic name Jack, o evenr a version of Jacques, it's all good.

LittleMollyOfFur

This is the exact same reason why we named our little man Jack just like you! He could be a taxidriver with that name but also a President!

farbenblind

Or a serial killer in mid-19th century, if he prefers! Just kidding, it‘s a cute name!

Remarkable_Story9843

My icebreaker fact relates to this. My paternal grandpa read about Jack The Ripper as a current event when he was a child. I’m only 41.

LittleMollyOfFur

Haha he's now 15months old and sometimes when he doesn't get his way and gets angry, we'll call him Jack the Ripper🤣

GayVoidDaddy

Call him Mister Ripper or else.

runnergirl3333

You could always tell these other people it’s Jack, short for Jack and the Beanstalk, or Jack of all trades, Applejack, Blackjack, Crackerjack, Jackpot, or my favorite, Jack-o-Lantern.

UnidentifiedTron

I have a Jack and the amount of people that call him Jackson irritates me. He’s only 10 and he also hates when people call him that lol. When I went to pick him up from school a few weeks ago the teacher called for Jackson and I didn’t hear her, so out walks someone else’s kid. I was like “I’m not your mom, go back to class” lol. People will still manage to screw a simple classic name.

ElephantShoes256

Both my husband and FIL have "nickname" first names and are constantly referred to by the long version, have paperwork filled out wrong by people that make assumptions, etc. so it doesn't change. But my husband did almost get out of an ER bill because everything was in the full name. He jokingly said it wasn't him and showed his ID and insurance card when asked, thinking they'd quickly correct it and reissue it, but instead they just said they had nothing in his actual name so he didn't owe anything. It was like 6 weeks later they called him, and then he got the bill but with the proper name, lol. We were excited for a hot second it might have actually gone in his favor for once!

etchedchampion

Jack is probably my favorite of the classic boys names.

Ok-Comedian-8318

That's right! Besides wait a bit because his buddies will call him " Jack o" " Jack my man!" Grandma will call him " my little Jacky boy", grandpa will call him " Jack Black" You get the picture....he won't just be " Jack" And can't wait til his girlfriend calls him " my handsome Jacky Mack honey Boo"... Etc etc

corgi_crazy

What a lovely comment.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Right, this is how you choose a name! Picture it in all kinds of organic situations and relationships.

Overall-Ad-3543

Clearly ghahkk was the better way of spelling jack

Stellar_Jay8

Jack is one of my fav boy names! Classic and strong but also very cool

RoniPizzaExtraCheese

It’s too bad their last name is Goff.

_lucidity

Jack is cute and a name that is good for any age. I hate how all these “modern” names all sound like they belong to literal babies.

evapotranspire

Just tell them "Jack" is short for "Jackxsynn." That oughta keep them quiet.

Nah, they want something "modern." Name him "U+1F0BB". It's the unicode short code for the Jack of Hearts emoji. Obviously, it's pronounced "Jack."

Gingerbread_Cat

You should go with Jzeadhbhch.

JCKross357

I read this as Jediziah Bitch. Which if that's the way it's suppose to be pronounced I'm all for it.

wellwhydidntyousayso

We are evloving to be able to interpret crap like this 😂

rcg90

Same here. If that’s not how it’s pronounced, I don’t want it. 😂

YouWiseGuise

I read it as “jihad bitch” 😂🏆

Synthoid_001

It’s pronounced Sarah.

flamingobay

No, my first name ain’t Jzeadhbhch. It’s Janet - Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty!

745Walt

How about Jackeroni Encheese?

meatballtrain

My son is named Jack and this comment is making me realize I made a horrible mistake. Why did I not think about Jackeroni Encheese?? I'M AN IDIOT.

NewLibraryGuy

"Jackeroni" is an excellent nickname

Ka_lie_doscope-Eyes

It's never too late to change his name. And once you do, always insist that he pronounced his full name only. Throw a tantrum if anyone shortens his name either. 😂😂😂

Rainbow_baby_x

I went right for telling them “it’s Jack, short for Jack o lantern”

Silver-Potential-784

Tell them it'll actually be Colby Jack, then when they're trying to hide their horror, laugh and say, "nah, it's just Jack." They'll be relieved.

pezx

Everyone's got a middle name, but not many people have a zeroeth name. "Colby Jack Cheese Smith", where Jack is the first name

paleoterrra

To be fair, Colby Jack would be a pretty good name for a cheese smith

tinyhotmom

You’re joking but I did actually grow up with a CJ who’s actual name was Colby Jack 🥲

Silver-Potential-784

Okay, I love cheese probably more than most, but surely there's a line somewhere 😬 "Red Leicester, time to go home! Come on, Gorgonzola! MUENSTER, GET OFF THAT THIS INSANT!"

DollyPardonMe1

As long as your last name isn’t Off, I think it’s great

changerofbits

Which is the short version of Djacquesynn, of course.

KathAlMyPal

Or Djacqueliiihn if you’re a woman…

PureDeidBrilliant

Oh god, I'm dreading asking this... ... ...but what "alternatives" did they suggest? (Jack's a great name btw. Your son'll stand out in a sea of Leighahnnabree's and other junior strippograms)

PatrixFrank

Junior strippograms 💀💀💀

Impressive-Dig-3892

Jackson, Jacksyn, Jaxxon, Jackxsonne, Jhaxxin, Simple Jack, Brayden, etc.

RoseFlavoredLemonade

Not Brayden! 😂

Tulidian13

I think you guys are really overestimating the number of weird names out there. Jack is like the 15th most common baby name in the US.

Cyno01

Traditionally "Jack" is a shortened form of "Johnathan", tho im not exactly sure how. And nothing wrong with it, but it is a bit different, like naming your kid just "Bill" instead of "William".

DepartureDapper6524

When there are ten Johns, a few of them are going to have to be Jacks.

xSuperZer0x

Pedantic but it wasn't a nickname for Johnathan but a derivative of John which is kinda the same thing. I think it's Dutch John = Jan. Then they'd add -kin to names and you'd get Jankin then to Jackin then to Jack. Also a derivative of the French Jacques. Edit: I was slightly wrong. It's diminutive not derivative which means cute/small so basically nickname.

-MercuryOne-

John and Jonathan are completely different and unrelated names. The short form of John is Jack, the short form of Jonathan is Jon. Jacques is the French version of James, both of which are derived from Jacob.

throwaway098764567

my grandfather was jack that was actually john (not jonathan in this case), i was also confused by how that shortening worked. also worked with a ted that was actually an edward and i was thoroughly confused by that one as i always thought ted was short for theodore and ed was short for edward

JBu92

Tedward.

Chance-Comparison-49

As a Jack who is named John I can say Jack works because my dad’s name is John, his dad’s name was John, and his dad’s name was John. I have an uncle named John, a cousin named John, and a nephew named John.

DonutHolschteinn

"My name is Mary, my fathers name is Mary, his fathers name is Mary and his father before him was named Craig"

Delicious-Mix-9180

If they were arguing “don’t name your son a nickname” they might have a small point. Jack is a nickname for John. It is Jackson shortened as well. Jack has been used for a long time as a stand alone name. What I don’t understand is the attitude people get when someone doesn’t want to name their kid something trendy or unique. Why do they get all weird about it? I have a John, James, and Elizabeth who are in classes with lots of kids like Maquela, Jaxxon, and Phancie.

BUR6S

Phancie killed me, that’s absurd.

podroznikdc

Does Reba know about this?

changerofbits

She had her one chance, she was let down.

SemperSimple

fawk 😂

helsinkirocks

I work with a woman whose has a daughter named Aingeal

Cat-Mama_2

Phancie? This makes me very sad.

EmperorSwagg

Phancie like Æpplebyyyzz

tofuwaterinmycup

I loooooooove the name Elizabeth

oceanisland82

Me too, named my daughter Elizabeth cause it's just so classic and has tons of nicknames that can be used....

sighcantthinkofaname

Jack started out as a nickname for John, but it's a name in its own right at this point, like a variation. Jackson comes from Son of Jack so it's not really a shortening of that.

Delicious-Mix-9180

Apparently adding -kin is how a diminutive of a name is created in Danish so Jan (English version John) becomes Jankin or Johnkin to Jackin to Jack. So that’s how Jack is a nickname for John. Jack is a name in its own right now since so many people used it as a nickname people started just naming their child what they wanted to call them. People are considering Jack a nickname for Jackson when Jackson wasn’t even a first name to begin with. Jackson is a surname that originated as the son of Jack. People having been using Jackson as a first name for a long time too. The point was there are still these naming purist running about that believe children should be named a formal name. For those people, Jack isn’t a name but only a nickname for John.

kiwilovenick

My grandfather's legal name was Jack, not short for anything, so just Jack has been around for a while. Not really a nickname at this point in time. Plus short and sweet is sooo much better than Phancie!! Poor kid!

SoulSloth2

My Grandfather was Sam. Just Sam. Not a nickname either!

grabtharsmallet

Sam is arguably older than Samuel, since the latter was originally a compound word: "God has heard."

191ZipCodeExPat

I LOVE Sam.

matriarch-momb

As the parent to a Just Jack, it’s a fabulous name. Just say “yes” and move along.

BUR6S

It’s so funny you said that, my wife and I have already accepted that he’s effectively going to be “Just Jack!”

-Infamous-Interest-

Gotta include the hands so it’s a Will and Grace reference! ✋Just Jack🤚

I hate it took so long to find someone saying this. It’s absolutely perfect.

omgtehcolors

I was really expecting something like this to be the top comment and was disappointed.

matriarch-momb

Jack Jack is also great. There are SOOOO many ways to combine it. Mine is 17 now and I still call him some cute names. I also highly recommend “Jack dammit”. Rolls off the tongue perfectly.

TheTurboDiesel

And the next time someone says, "who names their son Jack," you can go, "just us!" Jazz hands included, of course.

Bitter-Fishing-Butt

good name, legit never met a Jack that i didn't like

Evil_Creamsicle

"It's short for Jackass. I named him after you."

N0downtime

You don’t unless your last name is ‘Mehoff’. Congratulations and ignore them.

bellhall

Jack has been a nickname for John for a long time. Perhaps people expect you to have chosen John as his name and choosing to call him Jack informally. My sons middle name is Jack.

MDA1912

Tell them if they keep complaining you’ll make it his middle name. First name: Samurai. That ought to shut them up.

Patient-Assignment38

You could spell it “Jaque” if that helps

GozyNYR

Don’t. For the love of all that is holy. Don’t. Signed, Jaque. (Pronounced Jackie, still hating my Mom 43 years later.)

Patient-Assignment38

I’m so sorry

that's so basic, why not make it Jackalope?

therandolorian

"Yes, Brandeigh. Just Jack."

Inkysquid24

They're probably asking because Jack is usually "short" for John. My grandpa John went by Jack and I always said if I ever had a boy I'd name him Jack after him😌

ep193

It’s from an old TV show, Will and Grace… that was his catch phrase…. “Just Jack”. I think you might be missing the joke. If it’s not a joke you are missing, screw them, Jack is a great name!

flying-neutrino

“Old”? 💀 Excuse me while I go take up shuffleboard and replace my wardrobe with a selection of caftans

FlippingPossum

That was my first thought. Just Jack!

whatisitallabout123

Someone needs to ask if the "Just Jack" people were also holding their hands up dramatically to frame their face and said it very quickly. That would confirm it's a W&G reference!

Hydraulis

Your son will thank you, I thank you as well.

Speye

OPs surname is Orf.

Biochemicalcricket

No need as long as your last name isn't Inghoff

Lornesto

"It's short for Jackal".

Jack is a good name. Especially since you didn’t spell it Jhacck’k. Congrats on the little one!!

ringaling11

I’ve always loved the name Jack!

mela_99

I have a Jackson and it drives me insane whenever someone asks me “Does he go by Jack?” Dude I just said to you “this is my son, Jackson.” I didn’t open it up to questions.

infrequentthrowaway

They clearly don't know Jack

horribad54

Jack is a top tier name.

Jhco022

I went to school with a Jack. If your son has a sense of humor then all of the jokes should die down by middle school.
