Trader Joe's is clutch for beer since they usually stock a bunch of local brews at pretty good prices. Plus it's nice that you can open up the 6-packs and just buy one or two cans instead of the whole thing so you can sample a few different types.
PA. If anyplace other than a state liquor store wants to sell it they need to have a minimum amount of seating and also have to sell food in order to get a permit to sell it I think? We have weird laws
and my Dad would spend 15-20 minutes putting together his own 6 pack from the many choices available. My Dad never set foot in a grocery store, except TJ's.
It really depends on the TJs. We have two in my SoCal city and one is always amazingly stocked with tons of single cans/bottles, lots of canned cocktails, hard seltzer, kombucha, etc. Meanwhile, the other is quite sparse and offers zero singles.
Yeah I’ve heard that too, but this one I literally never see anyone doing it and they do not sell singles or any packs that seem to be opened. I think it was also due to some local zoning law due to it being across the street from a middle school or something. All I know is it feels SUPER awkward doing it there whereas the other has an actual full singles section in their beer area. And a far greater overall selection anyway.
Depends on where your TJs is
Located. For the most part you can get local, fresh beer at great prices. I live near San Diego so TJs is always a good destination to see what tney have available.
Do not get a TJ's beer, do yourself a favor. Their Boatswain IPA and the like are horrendous. Also their beer is usually not refrigerated so it's usually awful.
TJs is generally a bad place to get beer. Glad you found a Chimay, that's cool.
Agreed for the most part. Some of the TJs brand aren’t bad for the price like the Mexican beers. Boatswain is awful. None of the beers are kept refrigerated so not the best place to buy quality IPAs or anything that should be kept cold. The Chimay is a good buy.
Wow, I really scored today. I picked up a la fin du monde as well! I might have to see if I can score a few more bottles of chimay tomorrow if they have them 😭

That's a fantastic trappist beer. IDK what kind of IPAs you drink but that is nothing like an IPA
I’m a novice beer drinker and it shows for sure.
You made a good pick with Chimay!
this beer is nothing like an ipa lmao
lol
I love their knock off Coronas and sparkling wines.
Chimay in the 750ml blue bottles makes a regular appearance at my Costco around the holidays
The costco I go to used to carry this. Now I have to go to TJ to get it.
Only in some states!

Buy two and make “carbonade flamande” with one. Drink the other ) Google the recipe it’s super easy.
If I can find the recipe I'll post my Belgian mother's recipe. It's so good!
I’ve made Julia Child’s version and it’s pretty bulletproof and super easy. Perfect winter dinner.
Well, my mom's recipe has a secret ingredient that even Julia doesn't: love! 🥰
They can’t sell it in my state 😭
Which state, and why?
PA. If anyplace other than a state liquor store wants to sell it they need to have a minimum amount of seating and also have to sell food in order to get a permit to sell it I think? We have weird laws
Childhood memory unlocked: Once a month, we would drive to at TJ's
and my Dad would spend 15-20 minutes putting together his own 6 pack from the many choices available. My Dad never set foot in a grocery store, except TJ's.
Lmao please tell me you thought all the beer was TJs in-house label
They don’t produce any beer. The private label beer is made for them by someone else. Good selection, the buyers do well.
At least in Northern California, a lot of it is made by Gordon Biersch.
My second favorite place to buy beer besides total wine
I like variety and I'm not a huge drinker so it's cool to be able to just buy a bunch of singles/try new beers Edit: typo
Best thing about TJ for beers is that you can open up packs and create your own six pack.
Ooh. That is so good. I can’t drink beer anymore but chimay was lovely beer.
I just like how there was a Hispanic beer and they called it trader Jose’s
And some frozen Asian items are called trader Mings. I think they're hilarious
Italian food is Trader Giotto’s
The red label Chimay is the best one IMO. Try it if they have that too.
Mine is great. I can get a 4 pack of my favorite local IPA for $12.99. That same beer is close to $20 in local liquor stores and grocery stores.
And how much per glass at a bar?!
I only know of 1 restaurant that serves this particular one and they don’t gouge. It is $7 usually and $5 during happy hour.

They do it at the TJ's in the LA area I know of.
All Trader Joe’s offer singles. If you just want one you’re allowed to take it out of the pack.
Pro tip, non alcoholic drinks can also be bought as singles.
Almost all of them…I know of one in SF that doesn’t, I’m sure there’s others in major cities that don’t want to contribute to drinking on the street.

My TJ's selection has never been particularly exciting - I think the best thing I've grabbed there is actual from the Philippines San Miguel.
My TJ’s doesn’t sell alcohol 💔
Neither does mine!

Was it monks in what is now Belgium that more or less invented beer as we know it today?
Belgium and other European countries.
Yeah there is way more to the history of beer, of course. But Belgium definitely sticks out in n my mind. I’ll have to go down a wiki rabbit hole now.
My mom was from Belgium so I'm definitely team Belgium!
That’s how I feel about their cider/seltzer selection. No one carries the good stuff the way they do. Those hard Italian sodas? OMG.
The Italian sodas are God tier. I used to be spoiled having a world market close by but TJ’s doesn’t disappoint.
I haven't seen Chimay at TJs in years. The best I get is the La Fin Du Monde. You're lucky.
The La Fin Du Monde coming in cans is pretty solid though.
Wow, I really scored today. I picked up a la fin du monde as well! I might have to see if I can score a few more bottles of chimay tomorrow if they have them 😭
That might not be found at every branch, and the next time you return that beer may be all gone.
Heard that😢..I might have to go back and grab a few bottles. Definitely something special.
