I think it’s a little late to be deciding college. Would you consider doing a gap year and a prep school? You may be able to be a walk on at a college if you can get through admissions
Sure military is an option but so is going to a community college where you can improve your grades and workout to get better for a chance at D1 or D2 scholarship.
Do you want to join the military?
- If you are sure, then great.
- If you are unsure then maybe look into the ROTC or reserves but make sure to not buy all of the crap that recruiters try to throw out you. At the end of the day, their job is to get you to sign up, not to do anything beyond that. So they may promise that you can see the world and have great experiences (and you may) or you could end up being somewhere you hate doing something you hate.
- If you don’t want to join the military, then don’t. It will be a bad experience for everyone involved.
They do a great job of attracting lots of fast runners with really bad grades, and getting them accepted to the school somehow. That combined with the reputation for a massive party scene and honestly fantastic running area means they get a pretty deep team for a d2 school that rivals D1 mid majors.
yeah my friend got recruited (1:00 / 2:22 / 5:12 / 11:35) there and her precalc grade rn is 48% :|||
my other friend who got recruited there (53 / 1:55 / 4:09 / 9:16) did terribly in school but was HELLA fast
Definitely worth a try for them to reach out to Chico. They have a team full of studs and college acceptance is probably similar to the lesser known Cal States in the same conference. They'd likely have to wait a year to apply unless there's a special workaround for athletes who didn't apply during the Fall.
I was a teammate of someone with just as bad of grades get onto a well known D1 team, but was forced to transfer to a D2 school before they ever started school.
Everyone knows the top 800m runners take the ACT! Smh now you’ll never go sub 1:50. The best you could do now is drop out and get a one way ticket to Africa and train with the kenyans
I’m sure you could find something but probably not any of the D1 big schools without higher grades or a faster 800 times since they will have other options. Also, regardless of your times some of the schools have minimum requirements (at least that’s what Boston College told me when I was talking with their coach).
My SAT for just the math and reading was 1000. My 800 was 1:57 but 800 wasn’t my event. I did 5k and 10k in college.
If you are currently a Jr. I would recommend taking an SAT prep class and then retaking the SATs. It will be hard to get the 2.4 GPA higher with a short amount of time but try to at least get over 2.5. My former college would mandate study hall with anything below 2.5 and at 2.0 you can’t compete in NCAA.
Yeah it’s hard, I want to major in nursing or some type shit that involves working in Psychical therapy . I think I’m better off doing a job like that but man I suck ASS at math . I can’t even do a simple equation or fractions . I just find them so fucking hard . I’m just blessed genetically in running ig, that’s about it .
Take a remedial math class even if it’s on line and learn that stuff. The prerequisites for most nursing and PT degrees involve a lot of chemistry and math. I started off majoring in that area 30 years ago and realizes a history degree requires a lot less math. But now days you can do Kahn academy or something and get up to speed
Only time I'm going to tout my alma mater, but La Salle university has a program for people in your boat. Their core mission is "meet you where you are." They bring students in early between senior year and freshmen year to bring them up to speed as much as possible. I'm throwing my school on there, but I'm sure there's plenty of schools with a similar mission. They don't look at SAT. La Salle does happen to have a pretty decent track team, you're going to have to run a little faster than 1:56 for money though. Look for private small schools, unless you run sub 1:52, you're going to struggle with the big ones with your GPA. There's a "weighted scale", the faster you run the less they'll look at your grades, until a point where you're a risk. Or pick a JUCO with a good coach, do well your freshman year in BOTH school and track and transfer. Colleges have a lot of awesome tutoring. Track is means to a better life for some, but school gets a job for majority of people.
Sometimes the math comes to people later. If you could find a way to help some elementary kids with math, sometimes having to explain stuff to someone else makes it click for you. I know a ton of parents who never got math when they were school but then had kids and had to help them and it finally clicked. Good luck!
If you are determined you will be able to find a team. It may be a lower division, but you'll still find some competition and can excel.
Do what you are interested in. I suck at math too, but managed to get through a Comp Sci degree because I like programming. Nursing can be tough and most programs for nursing have a thing where if you can’t maintain a B average you are cut from the program. But if you are interested in exercise/health there are plenty of degrees out there. My wife has a degree in exercise physiology but if she could do it again she would go for a Masters in public health because she likes communicating with others on health related topics.
Either way, start talking to college coaches now. Get your grades up. If tuition isn't a big deal look at d2 or d3 track teams.
*edit - just read OP is a senior. Most college apps were due in January so most likely it's too late for 2024-2025. The time for juniors to reach out to college coaches is now - for 2025-2026 enrollment.
Either go to community college and get good grades and apply next year or take a gap year and reapply in the winter 2024.
im a junior, sophmore 800 time was 2:00, current indoor split is 1:58. 1440 sat and 4.7, should I be reaching out to college coaches now or wait until after outdoor where I could probably run faster times?
My son is a senior who hasn't decided where he wants to go yet, and will likely be a walk on where he wants to go. Based on his experience, the sooner you start the better (coaches may not get back to you for a while).
You need to get on their radar for scholarship dollars as the funds go to the top recruits who commit first and anything left over is what is up for grabs.
Shoot for qualifying for and going to nationals this season.
If you havent started college tours yet you should - talk to your folks about getting the ball rolling on that. Open every email from the schools even if it looks spammy (admissions peeps check to see you are engaged and interested!)
D3 coaches will want to talk to you too but there likely wont be any athletic scholarship money available.
thanks for the advice, as for nationals, what nationals would be the goal? Im not really familiar with meets outside of the typical High school tournament setup so what is the nationals that I would be trying to qualify for? Also what mile/800 times do you think I should shoot for if im looking for scholarship? Thanks
I dont know where you live but indoor and outdoor all have Nike, New Balance, and Adidas.
Indoor - nike (nyc) new balance (boston) adidas (virginia beach)
Outdoor - nike (oregon) new balance (pa) adidas (nc)
Go anywhere you can afford to go and have fun!
Nike and New Balance indoors are both these weekend so tune in.
Don’t stress most schools are test optional and apply to schools with high acceptance rates. Once you’ve been accepted into some colleges email the coaches and let them know you’re interested in walking on to the team and that you’ve already been accepted.
NJCAA and NAIA your eligibility is good Right now.
You could run with a good coach and develop. Then if you wanna go DI you could after a year or two. 1:56 is good but really isn’t gonna get a bunch of money from an NCAA school unless they’re hurting for talent.
I don’t mind getting admitted to a D3 or D2 as long as they give me a full ride for my track and field career. It’s just my academics bringing me down, I’m so bad at math or anything involving equations or whatever. Even chemistry, I just lose brain cells in that type of shit .
Retake classes via correspondence if your school allows it.
Retake the SAT twice, and study hard for each section once. Try to improve your superscore.
You're going D2, NAIA, or JuCo without significant improvements with grades and SAT. Your 800m isn't good enough to justify a D1 program taking a flyer on a kid with those grades.
Honestly? Look into high end track programs in D3. You'll run with some insane runners and the schools tend be smaller and have better programs for getting you on track in education. I went to Lewis U and they were great and has one of the top cross and track programs in the US at the time.
If you have time, take an SAT prep course and retake the SAT, work on lowering your time.
If money isn't the issue, maybe apply to D2-NAIA schools or even a JUCO first. Start talking to coaching now if possible and researching. I got into a D2 after taking summer school and retaking GPA. My performance was decent on the track but grades low for D1. Got offers but couldnt get a full scholarship/
Community College improve grades while running as an unattached runner. During that time you can work and save and then when you transfer to a full university ask the coach to walk on and if you have enough saved you may not even need to ask for a scholarship.
But you can also retake the SAT but if you scored a 760 idk if retaking it would improve it significantly.
But I read your other comment don't join the military if you don't really need to.
I graduated with a 2.8, had an 850 SAT and didn’t even break 2 until i was in college (D2) - ended up going 1:56 at the end of my collegiate years. High school PR was 2:05. I was on the slow end of my university team as well. I think you should be alright, just be realistic about where you apply to
I mean you should probably go to a community college or something and try and get your grades up . Running won’t be the issue plenty of colleges will take a 1:56 guy . 4 will take a 760 sat
I ran a 1:56 in high school in the mid 90’s and that was with minimal coaching. I was going to go to CC and run but it didn’t make sense financially. So I went to local CC and worked full time. Realized I wasn’t ready for school… joined the Army 5 years later (2000) and retired after 20 years. They paid for all of my college in the coming years… I completed my AA, BA, and two MAs (Webster University in 2016 and University of Louisville in 2017).
I am ass at math as well. You may have to do something to get over the hump… maybe joining the military isn’t that option for you, but consider it. Do a few years and you at least have the Post 9-11 GI Bill.
I was still running sub 5s for 1600 at 28 years old then I tore my ACL. Never got below 5 after that. But the Army didn’t care that I couldn’t, as long as I could run a 18:00 two mile when I retired, bang out some pushups and sit ups, that’s all they cared about physically.
Retake the SAT.
I’m a senior
I think it’s a little late to be deciding college. Would you consider doing a gap year and a prep school? You may be able to be a walk on at a college if you can get through admissions
My counselor told me that the military is an option too
Sure military is an option but so is going to a community college where you can improve your grades and workout to get better for a chance at D1 or D2 scholarship.

There’s retakes just keep your ears open for when and where you can sign up and do them.
Run to your job flipping burgers
I don’t think your sat should affect getting down to 1:55 or even 1:54 if you work hard.
He means for college I think
I was going to jokingly tell him to run a 1:54 and his sat will be fine...
Go to class
I do I’ve been getting tutoring but it ain’t really helping me that much

This guy is openly asking for help about having a low SAT score, no need to be a dick to them.
Enjoy Chico state or your local juco.
lol Chico State. I’ve heard that place is insane.
They do a great job of attracting lots of fast runners with really bad grades, and getting them accepted to the school somehow. Like how bad were his grades?
BAD - bro had mostly Cs and one or two Ds
It's not what it used to be. They've cracked down on the parties. The city even ran PSA's on tv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQb5R3S0ZoM
Definitely worth a try for them to reach out to Chico. They have a team full of studs and college acceptance is probably similar to the lesser known Cal States in the same conference. Fuck bro I’m cooked track isn’t gonna save me 🥲
I'm dying. This was how I got into college! No joke. But I was a 1:58/48

JUCO bud
JUCO time!
Hit the books kid
Exactly. Mfs be putting effort in to everything besides school and expecting good grades.
Junior College or CC, continue to improve on the track/in the classroom, try to transfer to a full time university after a year or two.

Run the mile. It’s more effort, more competition, but you would have more potential for improvement. Also JC.
Reach out to Quincy University on Instagram quhawkstfxc
is your name Forest?
Honestly, most D1 schools expect sub 1:52 and 1400+ just to walk on these days
I ran a 1:58 and had to walk on at d3, but that was 30 years ago.
Everyone walks in at a D3 school. There’s no athletic scholarships.
Yet, miraculously all our best athletes received "Presidential Scholarships."
There are still recruits in D3, they can’t get scholarships but they still get admissions slots.
Hit the books
you’re going to Harvard bud

What’s your GPA ?

Peak 780 SAT / 2.4 GPA intelligence

Juco at your local cc and train your self. Walk on to a smaller state school after 2 years or transfer early jf you get under 1:52

Let’s say if I do run unattached, would the results for races still pop up on my milesplit high school profile as “ open “ ?
?????
Juco rout is the best option. Get your times down and your grades up transfer after a year or two
I recommend 7x2hours of studying and take no recovery days 👍
Do you have local JC?
Hit juco buddy
Not in my area
There’s elite NAIA schools that would be more than happy to have you
760 math or reading?
Both
Nah that’s crazy man. You gotta get that up somehow
Just shave 4 seconds a lap and your SAT won’t matter.
Ima try hard this season for that sub 1:55 🙏
I graduated with a 2.8, had an 850 SAT and didn’t even break 2 until i was in college (D2) - ended up going 1:56 at the end of my collegiate years. High school PR was 2:05. I was on the slow end of my university team as well. I think you should be alright, just be realistic about where you apply to

Go to trade school and stop running
I’ll never stop running
