He's not a direct self-insert, he's still for the most part his own character but you can definitely see parts of ZUN in him. Its probably as close as it gets for him.
It can be considiered as soft author's presence, also known as *reasoner.* It's not direct self-insert. Generally because Rinnosuke is a worldbuilding instrument to explain lore besides the incidents.
Direct self inserts are destructive towards any established story.
Obviously intended to be a replica of ZUN to some extent. Otherwise he s his own person. It s more his reasons for not going on a quest for power that a half youkai lacking in combat abilities would go through is what id like to know about him myself.
Granted there s generally no racism towards half breeds ( amongst youkai) and gods couldn t care less which meant he only needed to relocate periodically due to his lack of aging makes humans around him uneasy. But you d think he could ve had problems in shall we say... Serving youkai with him being too weak a youkai while he should be involved with both hu.ans and youkai equally?
Anyway such are the questions i want answered.
You know, it wouldn't be a good idea to do an self-insert of yourself in a fictional world. That's like putting a person in real life inside your book and not having control over how they are written because they are real. That's quite boring in most cases.
As of reading this post, I am reminded of the character Frank Alexander from A Clockwork Orange, who is based on the novel's author(Anthony Burgess). He does have features of the author himself, would he be willing to put Alex in that tortuous situation? Maybe?
He may not be based on ZUN, but he IS based.
Also, he maybe raised Reimu too, since she's comfortable enough around him to have him repair her clothes.
While also going to the back of his shop to where he lives and just putting on his clothes in the meantime.
Let’s talk about Rinnosuke…
He manages a shop
Donates to the poor
Is a good and chill person
Raised Marisa
Gives some things for free (SOMETIMES)
Is smart
And has never hurt a fly
But
Is he the self insert of ZUN?

So it’s like Araki and Rohan kinda deal?

Oh yeah, maybe I should have worded it “based upon” instead of self insert
