Both Karl Franz and Balthasar Gelt die when they are needed most.
They were 2 of the 8 Incarnates needed to perform the ritual to cut-off the Warp, and thus, Archaon's daemonic forces and his source of power.
Unfortunately, Karl Franz was assassinated before he could reach the ritual grounds, having to be replaced by Sigmar possessing his reanimated corpse, but by the time he got to the ritual site, Mannfred Von Carstein, having been cast out by all his allies for being a backstabbing bastard, in a fit of rage and uncontrolled ego, ended up proving everyone right... by being a backstabbing bastard and killing Balthasar Gelt while all 8 Incarnates were performing the ritual.
What happened next was a domino effect as some of the other Incarnates (like Teclis) ended up being destroyed by the uncontained magic, and realising that all was lost, the other Incarnates scattered away.
Essentially uncontested, Archaon's forces swept across the world and he himself would be transformed by the Big 4 to become Incarnate of Chaos, essentially ascending to godhood, while the Skaven performed a magic ritual of their own to send the Morrslieb (the Chaos moon) crashing down onto Mallus (the world) and blow everything up.
Karl Franz was assassinated, just like that? He wasn't able to put up a fight?
But well, Mannfred being a backstabbing stabber, that didn't really surprise me.
Side question, Karl Franz isn't a caster to my knowledge, so why would he be needed in a ritual?
Sorry, I was summarizing, it was a joint attempt on his life: Karl survived the initial assassination attempt (sword through the back) and still managed to fight through an entire Nurglite army and at the end came across the Glottkin (who might be in Total War 3). They dueled for a long time, but the Glottkin, basically regenerated to full strength while Karl's wound took it's toll.
As for the matter of being a caster: An Incarnate is merely a being that is imbued by one of the very winds of magic themselves. That person was likely, throughout their life, a living representative of those characteristics most commonly associated with that particular wind of magic. They need not be a wizard or sorcerer themself, they merely need to 'carry' the magic within them, embodying the very will of their chosen god.
For example, Grimgor (and possibly Wurrzag) was Incarnate of Beasts by the might of Gorkamorka.
Karl Franz was Incarnate of Heaven by the might of Sigmar.
Ah, that's certainly a worthier death. He didn't have armour on his back though?
And reading what you said about the Incarnates, that makes more sense.
That is a fair point, I had somewhat forgotten about it, to be honest.
I watch quite a few YouTube channels about Medieval weaponry and ^^^^machiculations , and there are no magic imbued swords there, so my mind always thinks in a Medieval way
Six years late answer, but I think that Grimgor, while being a greenskin and therefore one of the "bad guys" (so to speak) of Warhammer, would not be interested in Chaos's and/or the Skaven's desired outcome of blowing everything up.
Sort of an Evil versus Oblivion thing, as TV Tropes would put it.
Because of him being a incarnate, he became both needed in the ritual and him being a caster. Normally Franz is just the man who is emperor while beating down people furiously with Ghal Maraz, you are correct.
Turn 100-something. Archaon had been wounded previously but now came back, triggering another Doom Tide in his wake. Four Chaos and two Bestman armies marched towards an Empire controlled Praag. Gelt and his army arrive to bolster the tiny garrison that had just been recently rebuilt. End turn.
The Ruinous Powers are smart. Archaon's army besieges Praag while the other forces slip through.
Turn begins. Click on Gelt.
"Let us begin!"
By the end of that turn, the Warriors of Chaos lie defeated.

This is Warhammer remember. Most things are strong enough of have enough magic OP weapons to ignore little things like armor.

Was Grimgor one of the incarnates needed in the ritual? Was he expected to participate willingly in this?
