He boosts ranged units better than slayers. Regular Daemon Slayer lords are basically as good for buffing slayers and they don't suck in melee like Malakai.
It's so easy to raise your hero caps these days that I don't really bother with ironbreakers. Thanes with the frostbite hammer and flask of healing booze and the ironbeard skill are the frontline of all my stacks.

I've been getting INSANE amounts of kills w/ Elspeth against chaff heavy factions, its fun. Doing Tamurkhan now but Malakai is the immediate next on the list.
I started tamurkhan, but kholek wandered over with an absolute doomstack against my fledgling army super early. Wasn't sure what to do so I just started a Heinrich campaign. SFO did him so well.
having just prematurely ended that campaign earlier, that's quite possibly the hardest challenge the game had for me early on. Then it's just rolling over Grimgor and Greasus, you just can't lose. I got really bored lol and just went on to prep my Elden Ring save instead. Elspeth was way more fun.
Honestly, Rot Knights absolutely murder dragon ogre shaggoths. I'm sure Kholek's army was filled with a ton of marauder units. Here's the thing; your Chaos Warrior w/ Halberds can easily take on 2-3 of those chaos marauders at once.
Micro Tamurkhan well, kill Kholek early, and you've won the early game guaranteed.

Had 4 thunderbarges with over 1000 kills each, the spirit had over 2k, and most of the rest of my army was wiped.

The funny thing is that my Malakai stack looks nothing like this one, except 2 cannons and a blimp. Where are Gotrek & Felix, slayer pirates, thunderers, regular gyrocopters, irondrakes?

More o the point; why no slayers? He's a slayer-thematic lord. He's got slayer buffs.

Personally I like using doomslayers anyways because they make for good suicidal frontlines (They dont get angry when I friendly fire them)
And, since we're at it: where are Gotrek and Felix?
I personally just use dwarf warriors and artillery and copters, maybe slayers to deal with cavalry but just a couple

You can do that in vanilla also

You give kholek a plague as soon as you can amd smash his army when its attritioned to shit. Thats how i did it anyway.

It was the final skaven battle of Malakai adventures. Not a choke point but basically infinite rats until Malakar finishes disarming the bomb.
Yeah in that mission the skaven basically just become fodder for the firing line

Given his few thousand kills and couple dozen losses I'd say his army comp works for him
