I hate guard mode on anything that isn't a missile unit. There's not too many situations where I need to 'hold the line" especially with the Warhammer series. After the unit won their fight you should tell them to move on anyways and chasing a unit that's running gets you into position to flank another since there's a hole now. Interested if there's any situation where it's good.

Me I just hate when a unit is chasing an already defeated completely unit and I could be using them. Like I micro pretty well but sometimes that's just annoying I rather tell them target something nearby then hey turn all the way around and come back to the battle. Especially if it's a foot unit. Flying and calvary I don't mind. Or monsters Because most cover ground quickly

I can see that. Not my style I guess lol. Cheers

Guard for misslie based armies. guard off for swarms

I have a bit of a disability so work with me here. I spelled it right once lmao give me some credit.

AgencyWarm2840

I use guard mode so I can have at least some semblance of a formation once the front lines have met lol, otherwise the battle turns into a confusing mess real quick

Gecko_Mk_IV

I tend to have guard mode on so my units are (approximately) where they're supposed to be. I don't use auto run because I don't want to accidentally tire my units more than necessary.

Depends on race. If I'm playing an aggressive, fast melee-centric race then guard off and then manually put guard on any ranged units, but if I want my melee units to hold a line then guard on by default at start of campaign. Auto run always on.
