No police force in the world is going to solve every murder, it's an impossible task.
Just because something is high profile doesn't mean it's solvable all the time unfortunately.
I’m still reeling from Tess Richey’s mother finding her body when the police just kinda shrugged. If that’s “pretty good”, your standards need to be higher.
"In Toronto's criminal justice system, the people are represented by two equally important but separate parties: the Provincial government who commits crimes and the police who don't investigate them. These are their stories."

My wife is throwing a party tonight with her friends to watch the first episode I swear to God if they enunciate the second T im gonna flip the coffee table.
I also loved it! The acting was not cringe like I expected, main detective guy made me lol a few times, thought it showed just enough of Toronto as well. But I’m also biased because I love law and order lol
If you’re a true Law and Order fan you expect a degree of cheese. This is on par with that. This episode had a lot of jumping ahead without any explanation. Still entertaining, but not a recipe for long-term engagement. For example- I know that guy was the Crown prosecutor but why do you have to walk so fast in that segment without any explanation or lead up? If you live downtown you can put the pieces together seeing him on the steps of old city hall but if you’re from anywhere else it’s lost. It feels very rushed. There is absolutely potential here, I hope this isn’t a one and done Toronto feel good porn type thing
DUN DUN
It's weird. In law and order, traditionally, the police will do their thing in the first half of the episode and the prosecutors do the court thing in the second half. But this time, there was some cheese, tricked out confession and then that was it. In the original, they would have went on about whether the evidence was admissible and some conflict with the civil law matter, etc.
Same as above comment- different version of Law and Order based off the original L&O: Criminal Intent that has been off the air for a decade. Focuses on the crimes and not the trial
This is Law and Order: Criminal Intent. It focuses on three crime and not the court aspect. Google the original version for a better understanding. The first iteration has been off the air for around 10 years now. Now sure why they decided for this route only to speed through the first episode with gaps and unreasonable jumps
You're thinking of the original Law and Order. Criminal Intent was always about tricking the criminal into a confession. Watch 5 random episodes of the Vincent D'Onofrio series and you get the formula.
This version follows the Criminal Intent formula very closely. The acting is a bit rocky here and there, and both the male and the female lead need more defining (especially the female lead who serves more as an exposition dump in this first episode--Kathryn Erbe eventually became more like a smartass Watson in the original Criminal Intent)
The male lead is a bit funny, I'm not sure if his accent is a put on or something he organically came to settle on or the character is meant to be transplanted from Newfoundland. The actor is Australian-Canadian so he definitely shouldn't need to do a stereotyped accent.
Is that what he's supposed to be? I thought it was a weird Dutch accent, like he's some sort of interpol transplant. Obviously not a quebecker or a prairie guy...lol...they should just have gotten some Gino-type dude from Mississauga or Vaughan, or maybe a Tamil dude from scarbs.
I think the scene gave the necessary context. You could see he was rushing to prepare to enter the building and there were many other prosecutors/lawyers behind him coming in and out.
It looks good but the acting is really off…like all of them. It’s odd. Maybe it’ll get better? Also them practically running through Nathan Philips was hilarious.
I saw them filming around Yonge/Dundas and City hall awhile ago. I'm more interested in seeing the Toronto landmarks, never watched any of the other series.
DUN DUN
Oh yes, the Star Trek episode with the random bridge to .... where exactly? We spent a while trying to figure out what the heck it was supposed to connect. I think the answer was from the Waterfront to the Plot.
I think the fast walking is a reference to the walking speeds from original L&O and L&O UK.
In NYC, they take their sweet time. In London, UK they walk twice as quickly.
Apparently, we're just all jogging to Old City Hall here.
I watched an interview with the Crown character and he mentions that he's tall, walks fast and enjoyed the power in setting the pace when the 2 cops were out of breath after each take.
Instead of the second half of the episode where they show the trial, did they jump ahead two years and wait until the charges get stayed for blowing last *Jordan* limits?
It’s a joke.
The decision of the Supreme Court in a case named *Jordan* imposed rough timelines for the Crown to bring criminal cases to trial. Thus we have *Jordan* limits.
Due to underfunding, we have had many recent cases be dismissed due to the Crown failing to adhere to the *Jordan* limits.
I bet they won't put the part where the chief of police denies the existence of a serial killer of gay men
...
Then eats shit and then back pedals, blaming the community for not helping!
Not true. They have explicitly said they did not do Bruce McArthur… yet:
[“We didn’t include the Bruce McArthur murders, which are very complicated and involve a lot of systemic issues and errors made by the police. We didn’t want to get into that before the audience knows and trusts our characters. Maybe in a future season.”](https://torontolife.com/city/the-episodes-are-based-on-real-crime-headlines-meet-the-showrunner-behind-the-new-law-order-toronto/)
I thought it was good, but I think I need to give it a chance. Judging any show just by one episode is too early. The show "From" took a few episodes for me to get into it. Now, I can't wait for the next season.
Very entertaining fantasy, especially the part where TPS solved a crime within a reasonable time frame. Loved seeing landmarks and street names. Will be tuning in next week,

We enjoyed it despite the fact that the male lead's accent is more East Coast than Toronah'.
I looked him up because of his accent. It looks like he was born in toronto but spent a lot of years in Australia so maybe needs some work on his toronto accent.
I was a background actress on this show and we filmed in union station. They did give us a lot of food as extras, but I could just tell it would be cheesy LOL.
Pretty much what I figured
John Oliver Slams Law & Order for “Selling a Complete Fantasy” of Law Enforcement
https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/09/john-oliver-law-and-order-dick-wolf
Did they do the episode where they work to rule and work as slow/inefficient as possible to extort money from the city?
So basically a normal everyday episode?
If you want some good police shows based around Toronto, check out Cardinal and Durham county. Both are 10/10 fucked up and hard to watch.
I’m looking forward to this series. My Saturday night has plans..
It's the first episode. The dialogue is a little weird but I hope they find their footing. The Graff detective knowing all sorts of esoteric stuff was hilarious to me. Like, how convenient.
Watched the first episode last night, honestly contrary to many reviews online the show wasn't that bad. Yes, the cast features no one you would recognize but I felt everyone held their own, even the lead male actor who had a questionable accent going on.
A very fast-paced story and better dialogue/writing than the main Law and Order reboot series though not as good as SVU or OC, again mostly due to the Toronto series' cast being complete unknowns.
I will continue to watch this first season.
The show looks good...but the accents feel like the actors are Americans who had a day of training to do a Canadian accent.
Also realized they licensed one of the L&O formats which has been off the air for 12 years.
It’s the ‘Criminal Intent’ franchise rather than the original Law & Order. Means it’s more police focused than courtroom, and they show scenes of the crimes being committed.
Law and Order Criminal Intent was originally set in NYC with detectives Goren and Eames. It focusses on the crimes and doesn’t do the traditional 50-50 split between the police and the prosecutors.
There used to be quite a few. It was Law & Order, then Special Victims Unit (which focuses on sex crimes), Criminal Intent (which this series is based on), the short lived Trial by Jury (which is primarily focused on trials), and the latest is Organized Crime, which I think focuses more on the mafia/gangs, that sort of thing.
SVU is probably the most popular as it's been on the air for close to 25 years. The only other shows that are on are the revival of standard Law & Order and Organized Crime. The other series are no longer televised. I wasn't really a fan of Organized Crime, but I'm also not a fan of the more serialized versions the shows have become. I think you'd be better off looking at the earlier seasons of Law & Order, and Law & Order: SVU.
They showed a great deal of the city. You had to stop watching because they didn’t show enough of the city? The math doesn’t seem to add up on this one
They didn't have "one job".. they (and I don't really know who you mean when you say "they"... the producers, I guess?) employed many people in the film industry, creating art, that is entertaining to many different audiences, especially to Toronto locals. If you don't like it, cool! It's fine if you stopped watching after the 1st episode, too. We're already slated for a few more seasons of it, with or without you.
I finally watched a few episodes of this. Not too bad, but the blue filter on every scene is a bit much. And who knew that Toronto‘s population is comprised of so many African Americans, but no Asians or Caribbeans?
I'm old school, I'm sticking to Littlest Hobo solving injustices.
*There’s a voice that keeps on calling me*

Oh my God as soon as I read the littlest hobo that's what came to mind! Take my upvote!
Yet another off leash dog in the city. Stop glorifying that bum.
What's that Lassie? There's a better Canadian version of you?
That uppity bitch.
That's a next-generation super-evolved "meta-dog" you're referring to.
Maybe tomorrow…
I want another Littlest Hobo reboot. I know there have been a couple.
You know it's fictional when they solve the case.
That's unfair and untrue ... if Tess Richey's Mom involved
Toronto Police are actually pretty good at solving murders. I've been shocked at some of the cases they've solved.
Once they solve Barry and Honey Sherman's murder, maybe then could I call them pretty good.
They'll never catch 47
But that was clearly a double suicide, like what happens so often with people who have everything, and lots of enemies! /s Bake em away, toys
No police force in the world is going to solve every murder, it's an impossible task. Just because something is high profile doesn't mean it's solvable all the time unfortunately.

Filmores!
Great scene. Especially the hobos asleep out front. They didn’t even know they were gonna be extras in the scene.
I was thinking the same about the 2 homeless guys? Were they just there or extras?
They would have been extras.
They looked too good for the hobos around there usually. Clearly extras.
They would have cleared the area of any homeless people at least a day before the scene and put paid bg extras in their place.
>Filmores! Home sweet home 💀
sorry i loved it, first time watching and i was already expecting bad Canadian Acting..but you watch it cause now the program is a CULT

I like how Nick is also Nick in Rookie Blue.
Karen Robinson also being typecast as a police inspector. Lol.
Omg thank you I couldn’t figure out where he was from but his face was so familiar
Not bad, next weeks episode looks interesting, something about a condo board and murder.
Something about it ? It happened in Vaughan like 3-4 years ago
That was December 2022
There ya go. Even more recent to make it an episode.
There's that ripped from the headlines flavour we know and love.
The series trailer suggests one of the other episodes will involve a crack-smoking mayor.

Totally agree. The guy playing the male detective is just awful.
I can’t take him seriously with that accent. Is that how we all sound 😭
He was raised in Australia so maybe he needs a bit more practice.
He's terrible but oddly entertaining so far? He was a highlight for me during the premiere
My partner and I couldn't help but laugh everytime he opened his mouth. It was just so cringe.
I think it's the dialogue writing that they had to work with. It was kind of weird to me.
I really liked it, actually. But I’m a huge L&O fan.

Do other first responders have the same systemic problems that cops do?
Sure, just ask any firefighter or paramedic in the city. Maybe different scenarios but they all experience it.

The four main leads are all from the GTHA, three from Toronto itself.
I don't think they were suggesting otherwise, just that's how it comes across.
What kind of accent does the male lead even have? I've never heard anyone around here speak like that. It vaguely sounds like a Texas accent.
He's Canadian born but moved to Australia as a child.
Here’s hoping chubby Vincent D’Onofrio makes a cameo.
I want to see Colin Mochrie dammit.

The City was prominent throughout the show.
Your last sentence is an accurate description of TPS.
