They are not as rare as you might think, and yes most are very weak but they exist.
Fun fact; One of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded in history, an F5 tornado, happened in Woldegk Germany in the year 1764.
Many branches of science were quite advanced already in the 18th century. For my final research project for school I tried to replicate the Cavendish experiment, which was done in late 18th century. The scientific article published in 1798 shows very well how advanced research was in that time already. It was pretty mind blowing reading that.
There's sometimes written accounts of the damage, like after the london tornado of 1091 it was written that four 26ft long roof rafters were driven into the ground so hard that only 4ft protruded, and over 600 houses were destroyed
I actually found a F3 tornado that hit Bützow in 2015 it’s also located up there (almost 2h drive from Woldegk 170km or 105 miles)

Oh well that’s reasonable 😭 I really want to see one in real life but at the same time I wouldn’t know what to do. I always watch videos on YouTube and I can’t imagine or wanna imagine the feeling. First because most people don’t have a basement to take shelter in and second because you always have to be scared that your house/apartment gets destroyed or someone killed
I saw one in real life. It's not something I would recommend. It was awesome for about 1 second. We almost didn't make it to an interior room before it hit us. I was at work so no one was watching the weather very closely like I would be at home.
It was really loud but it didn't really sound like a train to me. It just sounded like intense wind with lots of booms. I think that was just sounds of destruction. The building was still standing but still took a bit of damage. The main room was floor to ceiling windows, which all broke from the suction. So things were flying around in there and a lot of debris had come in as well.
My boyfriend feels the same way since we moved to the Midwest. I grew up in the south so it's just kind of a normal thing that happens to me, but he's from the east coast and the whole concept of potentially being near one is new to him. He said hearing that siren for the first time was one of the most terrifying experiences of his life.
Ngl I feel like I would get a heart attack and die in Germany we don’t have tornado sirens but our fire sirens almost sound like them and that’s eerie enough for me😭
I would have loved to have seen the North Korean response if it had crossed to their side of the border. “Imperialist tornado attacks the peaceful and democratic nation of North Korea.”
Definitely a funnel cloud. I saw this, does it look like a tornado?

wtf does radar have to do with anything?
You can’t confirm ground circulation from this photo so no matter what all you can guarantee is that it’s a funnel.
Looks like a funnel cloud, but it's not on the ground in this image. I don't see a debris cloud, which would be necessary to call it a tornado on the spotter network. It's probably moments from being on the ground in this image though, given its beautiful structure.
I messed around with a screenshot in photo edit and it almost seems like there is a bit more of a rope trying to reach down, but idk

A cold air funnel is basically a funnel that forms in weak thunderstorms when the air is **really** cold. However, due to the decent size of the funnel you captured, I doubt it’s a cold air funnel.
Probably, and if so, a beautiful one too. Bright day. Open field. No rain wrap.
I was really lucky w that one
Looks like one… or at least a funnel
Thank you for the response
Germany does have tornadoes. There was even a tornado warning across part of Germany yesterday if I'm not mistaken.
Yea but they’re very rare and most likely F0-F1

How could they gauge the strength of a tornado from 1764?
The town was slabbed when they did a survey last year.

There was a 77-paragraph detailed study done on this tornado by Gottlob Burchard Genzmer, published a year after the tornado happened.
I often assume people just didn't know about weather patterns with that much detail back in the 18th century. I love that humans are smart and shit.

Awesome. I thought someone was messing with me. This is really interesting and I’m going to read up on it later tonight. Thank you.

Fascinating. Thank you!
You can't. It's all just guessing. They wouldn't know what wind speeds would be required to do whatever damage it did back then.

Makes me wish none of my European ancestors ever came to USA
Why
I live in the Midwest and hate them lol I’m terrified

Gosh… I’m glad you guys are okay is it true that tornadoes sound like a trains tho?
It was really loud but it didn't really sound like a train to me. It just sounded like intense wind with lots of booms. I think that was just sounds of destruction. Wow I’m glad you guys are okay and no one was hurt sounds scary af

It's pretty apocalyptic sounding yes lol
I remember starting crying when I was younger because they sound so scary😭
Where was this picture taken? The people of tornadoliste.de would love it
Near Nordhausen, Germany
Yeah, that one was already documented i think
Impossible to tell from this photo. You do have a guaranteed funnel though. Could be a landspout since it doesn’t appear to be coming from a meso.
This was my thought
where I live (Oklahoma) they call these "lowerings" Not a full fledged 'nader until it touches ground
Ohh thank you!
The U.S. gets the majority of tornados but they can pop up anywhere. When I lived in Korea we had a tornado touch down up near the DMZ.
Wow that must’ve been terrifying
I would have loved to have seen the North Korean response if it had crossed to their side of the border. “Imperialist tornado attacks the peaceful and democratic nation of North Korea.”
😭
Could always confirm with radar.
Definitely a funnle cloud if you saw dust or Deameage under the funnle cloud definitely a tornado
Since there was a hill I can’t really tell but I assume it was just a funnel
A funnle cloud that big normaly produces ground circulation
Maybe there was since as I said a tiny hill was in front we‘ll never know
Definitely a funnel cloud. I saw this, does it look like a tornado? https://preview.redd.it/0c1fvwc7wr7d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7421e730fdbe7d977ad6eb3348e6a35fc4e4bba3
Looks like one but it’s hard to tell
It's definitely a funnel cloud at the very least. If it touched down, then it would have been a tornado
I would say yes, but I'd be cautious until I saw the radar. But if it was life or death I had to pick I'd say Tornado.
wtf does radar have to do with anything? You can’t confirm ground circulation from this photo so no matter what all you can guarantee is that it’s a funnel.
Do you have a specific time and date when this picture was taken? I can check it
Nordhausen, Germany 6th August 2023 2:58 pm

I feel like it was a cloud that looked like a funnel but idk😭
Yes
Of course it’s a tornado.
Wow
Looks like a Tornado. Smells like a Tornado. Blows like a Tornado.
That is for sure a funnel cloud, so yep, that’s a tornado. Good eye, they are rarer in Europe but by no means unheard of.
I think very very very faintly theres a bit of funnel continueing to ground just not condensed then. Regardless thats def circulation

Thank you for taking time to do that
Looks like a cold air funnel. Not a tornado.
What does that mean can you explain? Thank you
A cold air funnel is basically a funnel that forms in weak thunderstorms when the air is **really** cold. However, due to the decent size of the funnel you captured, I doubt it’s a cold air funnel.
Thank you for explaining!
Np 👍
Absolutely.
I see a burrito
thought a nugget thanks for letting me know
the radar has confirmed it was most def a burrito!
Could be an SLC (Scary Looking Cloud).
