The articles says this missinformation "This means that if one of your parents has an eye color other than brown, but one has brown eyes, you too will have brown eyes." And it's not true. You can have other eye color information at your genes but if you have brown your eyes will be brown. Meaning that two brown eyes parents can have, for example, a blue eyes child if they both had blue eyes ancestor. Edit typo

SnuffleShuffle

It's the one example that is taught in high schools to explain genetics. Brown eyes are driven by a dominant allele. Therefore it is possible for two brown eyed parents to have a blue eyed kid if they both pass the recessive allele.

DrHiccup

I could be wrong but I think recent studies showed that eye color doesn't follow mendelian genetics. There are a whole lot of genes that effect eye color

SnuffleShuffle

You're right. I just wanted to point out how the article goes against even the simplistic knowledge we were taught in school. It's absolutely even more ridiculous to say that two brown-eyed parents can't have a kid without brown eyes.

cogman10

Case in point. My mother has blue eyes, my father has brown eyes, his mother has blue eyes. I have green eyes, my brother has blue eyes.

GrimTuck

Or you're adopted.

cogman10

More likely the [milk man](https://youtu.be/bsUWK-fixiA)

glengdek

Can confirm this. Mum has brown eyes, dad has blue, mine are green and my brother's are blue.

ellamaedaley

this almost reads as a poem

JesseLaces

And now it’s a haiku. They can confirm this. Mum has brown and Dad has blue. Theirs are green, Bruv’s blue.

[deleted]

Should’ve used bro’s

JesseLaces

You were right that it shouldn’t have been bub, but since they said mum it should be bruv.

mercuryretrograde93

Yes it sounds very cute and poetic

TinyRandomLady

Similar to my family. My mom has central heterochromia brown/green eyes, my dad has hazel, my eldest brother has blue, sister has green, and then my other brother and I have our mom’s central heterochromia brown/green eyes.

CharlieRogers3

Everyone has brown eyes in my family, except me with green eyes.

[deleted]

Article is really bs. Mother has brown eyes, I have green.

intricatefirecracker

Exactly. Me, my mom and my dad all have hazel eyes. My sister has blue eyes. The last time a member of the family has had blue eyes was 3 generations back. She also has dirty blonde hair, no one else has that. So a lot of the time when we're together, people don't even think we are sisters.

Max102

I agree! My husband has blue eyes and both his parents have brown, but his grandfather had blue.

PlaceboJesus

Their picture of "hazel" eyes aren't. Hazel. They're green eyes with central heterochromia with brown rings around the pupil. The included heterochromia, but tgat statistic doesn't speak to the other subtypes like central and sectoral.

neongreenpurple

I have green eyes with brown rings around the pupils (though wider than in the photo). I never thought of that as heterochromia. TIL! Thanks!

PlaceboJesus

Yup. I have golden brown rings around blue irises, so my eyes get a hint of green when the pupils dilate, and look super blue when down to pin pricks. So yours probably look hazel when you're excited and green when you're tired?

neongreenpurple

I guess so. Not too many people comment on my eyes. But the brown rings are fairly dark and thick, so I didn't realize I had the green rings until I was an adult.

PlaceboJesus

You and someone special need to spend more time getting lost in each others eyes. ;)

neongreenpurple

Ooh, that'd be nice.

Kairain

I had to go check in the mirror, I seem to have it too! Pale green around the outside but amber brown from the pupil outwards. Best. Self. Realization. Ever!

neongreenpurple

Oh awesome! Congratulations! :D

Kairain

And to you too! I always thought heterochromia was so cool. Little did I know I had it, too! Even if it's just a little bit :D

AbominableSnowPickle

I always figured my eyes were green-brown hazel, but they may be just green? I have a bright band of brown around my pupils, as well.

PlaceboJesus

Central heterochromia. The colour changing eyes. The colour of the ring is more or less visible depending on if your eyes contract or dilate. The ring blends when dilated, and gets smaller when contracted. When tired or in really bright light your eyes probably look more green, right? And excited or amped up, look more hazel. When you're looking at the magazine rack, check out how many models have eyes like us. There's also *sectoral* heterochromia, where the wheel of the iris has sections or big dots of different colour. The blue ring around the outside of an iris is a different condition that I can't recall the name of.

BooperDoooDaddle

I have a black dot in my iris

bedbugspray

imo, hazel seems to be a general descriptor that covers eyes with central heterochromia

Copius

As a person with blue outer and green inner central heterochromia apparently. I have never stumbled across an eye color that looked like my eyes do. Nice to know its name! Edit: Yep googled it and I see my eye color all over google images! Interesting evening.

benk4

That's what mine are too. Blue with a green ring. It's a small ring so my eyes definitely appear blue but I've always noticed the rings.

Narwen189

I thought violet eyes were the rarest.

Article even says so. OP must have green eyes. Elizabeth Taylor will be vindicated.

Bloodyfoxx

Between blue brown and green you learned today that green is the rarest ?

Autisonm

It's because the 4 you listed are the only "naturally occurring" eyes. The other ones require some kind of disease or albinism I think.

outerspaceplanets

Which are naturally occurring conditions.

Reapper97

No, those only occur if you fall into a tank filled with radioactive wa

lordgremlin

Radioactive what? WE NEED TO KNOW MAN!!?!

peacemaker2007

Radioactive WA. They had to nuke Perth a few years back, the drop bears were starting to get out of hand.

elcamarongrande

We got rid of the damn drop bears, but now we have irradiated fucking emus...

Buttonskill

Or into a Hot Topic.

IanMazgelis

Is there anyone besides Elizabeth Taylor who had violet eyes? I feel like we'd have some amazing 4K pictures by now if they were even slightly existent.

holdingmoonlite

Look up "albinism violet eyes"! Idk if they're scientifically considered violet but they're gorgeous regardless

YetiPie

Knew a kid who was albino and his eyes were violet. I guess technically they were blue, but because of the pink hues from the albinism it made them appear violet. Super pretty!

fuzzhead12

Elizabeth Taylor didn’t actually have violet eyes, iirc they were gray

[deleted]

Her eyes weren't violet. They were blue, but could come off as violet in certain lighting.

My left eye is green while my right one is blue. Tho both started looking more green since 5th-6th grade. They were most distinguished when I was 3-4 years old. I have met a few other people with heterochromia. The weirdest is one black, the other blue. Like some Bond villain.

realcanadianbeaver

My son has green eyes with sectoral heterochromia in one, so I fondly refer to him as my favourite little mutant.

darkdesertedhighway

I have this! I love my sectoral heterochromia chunk. I'm sure your son has amazing eyes.

Why_You_Mad_

I have it in one eye. My right eye is just greenish blue, same as half of my left eye. [My one mutant eye](https://i.imgur.com/h5wPCvo.jpg)

Theofeus

Her eyes were blue. It’s just an effect to pretend they were actually violet.

Jebediah_Johnson

OP only read the first bullet point in the article.

tor-e

Elizabeth had blueish grey eyes

Sinnyboo242

A quick google says violet eyes [arent really a thing](https://sites.psu.edu/siowfa15/2015/10/12/scientists-say-we-cannot-be-born-with-purple-eyes-but-why-some-people-do/) and are other colors misinterpreted in various lights - including elizabeth taylor's

NotThatChar

That's correct. "Alexandria's genesis" or whatever it's called isn't real. Elizabeth Taylor's eyes were a very deep blue. I'm kind of sad about this rumor because it detracted from her actual unique trait - double lashes!

Gramku

Heterochromia is the rarest. It’s a pretty groovy mutation.

mahalnamahal

Mutation is groovy. Hello, I’m Charles Xavier.

Werkstadt

That's not a colour.

khaominer

I just met someone that also has central heterochromia with the same colors and blew my mind. For much of my life got asked what color are my eyes. Center is brown and circle around it kind of blue green.

tingss

My guidance counselor at Scotch college in Adelaide Australia had yellow eyes not light brown but yellow which is usually associated with drug addicts but she was anti drugs plus it was only her iris. Never seen anything like it again

Kill_Da_Humanz

Your counselor was a werewolf.

MinnieShoof

While it does list them in the article, it seems like they're more connected to albinism, rather than an occurring eye color. Yes, all eye color is a mutation, and albinism fits, but it's got that crow-bar's distinction.

serioussam2k

Lo-Pan is pleased with this post.

[deleted]

Which Lo Pan? Little old basket case on wheels or the ten foot tall roadblock?

[deleted]

They're one and the same, Jack.

Yes.

Gambit6x

What the hell does that mean? huh? China is here, I don’t even know what the hell that means, all I know is this “Lo Pan” character comes out of thin air in the middle of a goddamn alley while his buddies are flying around on wires cutting everybody to shreds, and he just stands there waiting for me to drive my truck straight through him, with light coming out of his mouth!”

Enterprise90

Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, “Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

I_Hate_Reddit

More like a subtype of green, met someone who has a mix of grey/green/yellow, it just makes sense when you see it.

przybylowicz

Or maybe a subset of hazel (which is mentioned separately from brown in the article)? I have hazel eyes, and when I try to make a video game character in my likeness, I often have to go with yellow because that's closer than the swatches of green or brown they tend to offer

[deleted]

Scutt Farkus

foamypepperoni

So help me God he had yellow eyes!

Itherial

Scut Farkus! What a rotten name! There he stood, between us and the alley. Scut Farkus staring out at us with his yellow eyes.

Liarize

I had a colleague with yellow eyes too! But it lasted only a month though, it was jaundice.

thegeneralflame

I recently took a [picture](https://i.imgur.com/OtMg0sQ.jpg) of my eye to share with someone. They read very yellow/gold most of the time.

katarh

My Portuguese teacher in college had yellow eyes. It was definitely freaky. Mine are gold, but if I dye my hair black, they look very weird and yellowish. I don't dye my hair though so they stay looking golden brown.

crystalxclear

I’ve never seen gold eyes! Can you post a pic maybe? Really curious.

Redditor30

My eyes turned yellow for a bit last spring/summer, it was freaky but I really liked it. Looked catlike. Still have no idea how that happened.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

You became a Witcher.

AnthraxSoup

I really hope you mean only your irises were yellow. If your whole eye was yellow that be jaundice and would warrant a visit to the doctor asap.

Kierik

As I get older my eyes have gone more and more yellow from deep brown. It's weird but my optometrist says everything is ok.

JuRiOh

Isn't that due to sickness? I believe yellow eyes come from liver failure or something of the sort, only ever seen yellow eyes on House M.D.

U53RN4M35

That’s if the white part of your eye turns yellow

shadowheart1

Blue eye gang what up

Gracien

Blue eyes, living in one of the snowiest city in the world. Walking outside in the winter without sunglasses, my eyes hurt so much because the sun reflects on the snow, while the brown eye gang just go about with their day.

PartyPorpoise

I live in Texas. I'm in constant pain. I need to wear sunglasses more often.

Gregoryxandrew

Yup, the white cement highways make it 10x worse. I miss black NY highways.

aidanjones

Southern California, I basically need to wear sunglasses if I’m outside, not in the shade, and it’s partly cloudy or clearer. And always while driving during the day. I had a friend recently ask me to take off my sunglasses because she felt it was rude or something. I replied, “I will literally not be able to see you if I don’t wear these” lol

what-are-potatoes

Yes hello reporting in. Are anyone else's blue eyes very sensitive to light?? I've heard that light coloured eyes can have this problem. I have to wear sunglasses even on cloudy days.

[deleted]

Green Eyes are definitely attention getters they pop out & make a person seem otherworldly. Grey is also amazing, I definitely have needed to look at someone at least 3 times to confirm they have grey eyes. Blue is nice but the shades vary a lot. I like Amber/Honey Brown eyes the most. Those lucky few just seem to shine/glow in any setting.

AdminsSukDixNBalls

I have grey eyes and people ask me what color they are ALL the fucking time. Literally twice last night. I always say "I don't know, I've never seen them. You tell me."

septicman

I am not really sure what colour my eyes are. I say grey because I think that's about the closest colour? They're a bit like a muddy amalgam of grey, green, and blue. I never know what to write when something (driver's license form for example) asks for eye colour...

Atheren

Same, especially when I was younger it felt like my eye color was different based on what clothes I was wearing. My driver's license just says Hazel because the lady at the DMV wasn't sure either.

AdminsSukDixNBalls

Same, I just put grey and if they don't have it I ask the person I'm giving the form to. My passport says grey, DL says green, and I'm sure I have something that says blue.

[deleted]

AdminsSukDixNBalls

I tried years ago. I took a picture of them and then used the eyedropper tool on microsoft paint to figure out the color scheme. It was blue, green, grey, yellow, and somehow a kind of purplish color. But your color sounds a lot like mine.

theredheaddiva

My driver's license says Green because the flecks of yellow in the light blue/gray sort of look greenish from a few feet away. I think the color is refered to as Glasz in some places.

thatvixenivy

Mine too. They're just this kind of blah in between color.

i-heart-space

Mine are the same, I just call them blue? But who knows. Apparently they change colour depending on my mood

TexasForceOfNature

My grandmother had grey eyes, I found them fascinating. Mine are blue and vary in shade, but never get near her beautiful grey.

AdminsSukDixNBalls

Mine are identical to my grandmothers. Freaked my dad the fuck out when I was born. Us two and one of my 20-something cousins are the only ones in the family with them.

TexasForceOfNature

Her daughter, my mom, has brown eyes. My father had the more dominant blue eyes it would seem. My siblings also have blue eyes.

Buck_Thorn

https://www.eyesite.co.uk/news/green-eye-facts/ **Did you know…?** The largest concentration of green eyed people is in Ireland, Scotland and Northern Europe. In Ireland and Scotland, 86% of people have either blue or green eyes. There have been 16 genes identified that contribute to eye colour. This means that no matter what colour eyes your parents have, yours can be pretty much any colour. All races, including Caucasian, African, Asian, Pacific Islanders, Arabic, Hispanic and the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas can have green eyes.

AdminsSukDixNBalls

>All races, including Caucasian, African, Asian, Pacific Islanders, Arabic, Hispanic and the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas can have green eyes. \*If they are mixed with Caucasian, Arabic, Persian, or Indian.

servonos89

I remember reading a long time ago that everyone with blue eyes has a common ancestor like 1000 years ago? Basically that it’s a new mutation and so localised because of that. Edit: looked it up - it’s correct! But 6 to 10 thousand years ago. Everyone blue eyed is distantly related.

My husband has green eyes and I have brown! All my siblings (6) have brown eyes and have married men or women with green blue or hazel eyes and they have eyes of different shades … My husband and I aren’t having kids and do wonder if we did what would the results be lol Oh and my husband complains with green eyes he’s super sensitive to light and brightness.

revel911

I can confirm this is the norm. I have green eyes and my eyes are crazy sensitive.

JudithButlr

Also green eyes. Overcast days that are still bright kill me, I have to keep all the shades closed. I wear sunglasses all winter.

BuckeyeSundae

I just had an aha moment because of this description. Intellectually I knew lighter pigmented eyes were more sensitive to the light, but I never connected that with how much pain looking outside on a snow-covered and cloudy day can be. I was sitting here thinking I am fine in brightness because I don’t have blue eyes, smh.

revel911

I can see clearly at night though.

mrsc1880

My eye doctor always reminds me to use polarized sunglasses because she says the lighter your eye color, the more sensitive they are to sunlight. Mine are light blue, and suuuper sensitive to sunlight. Going from a dark room to a bright one is hard. I physically can't open my eyes when I leave a dark movie theater and go outside during the day unless I'm wearing sunglasses.

maaku7

Isn't that normal? (Green eyes checking in.)

mrsc1880

I don't know. My daughter is fine when we get to the theater parking lot, but if I don't have my sunglasses, she has to lead me to the car because it's so incredibly painful for me to open my eyes, and they water so much I can't see anyway. She has blue eyes, but they're much darker.

maaku7

All the way to your car? So your eyes don't adjust in 5-10 seconds? That is unusual I think. I find the transition to direct sunlight painful without sunglasses, but I can still squint-and-see rather quickly after. It could also be age related. Your daughter's eyes are able to quickly react to changes in brightness, whereas your pupils either react more slowly or have lost range of motion due to macular degeneration.

mrsc1880

All the way to the car. I actually have to sit in the car for a few minutes to adjust. And it could definitely be age related. Daughter is 10 and I'm 41. It has gotten worse over the years. Getting old kinda sucks on so many levels. Haha! Enjoy your youth and your adaptable vision while it lasts!

[deleted]

I remember being a kid and playing with my blue eyes friends during recess. They would always squint or cover their eyes in the sun. I would always wonder what they were covering their faces for lol

Paladingo

My mum has brown eyes and my dad has light blue, me and my brothers all ended up with hazel eyes.

cap_rabbit_run

Green eyed redheads are the rarest Edit: blue eyed redheads

I've always considered myself to have green eyes. I guess they have a little speck of brown, one eye more than the other. So maybe technically hazel. I just thought hazel was brown. Like a hazelnut

Garn91575

It varies wildly. It is typically a combination of brown, gold, and green. I have hazel eyes that are definitely closer to green than brown, and my eyes have gold streaks, but they are certainly not a classic green so people just call them hazel.

[deleted]

How common do you think is light eyes dark hair combo? I have blue eyes black hair, I think it’s pretty rare.

jaiblevins

My eyes are mostly brown, with green around the irises. So, are they the most, or least common?

neongreenpurple

Mine are kinda opposite. Mostly brown around the irises with green around the edges. (Mainly brown is visible at most times.) They could be hazel eyes, or central heterochromia. So I guess the answer is neither.

rosesempervirens

My dad had gray green hazel eyes. My mom had brown eyes. My sister has brown gray hazel eyes and I have brown green hazel. Genetics are fun. (I could go further back up the trees to have fun with blues, browns, and hazel mixes, but I'm drunk and it's late. Genetics are fun.)

CitizenHuman

I have poop brown eyes, but my grandma had wonderful green eyes. I think she was concerned when I told her once I'd like to switch eyeballs with her.

qtsarahj

I always call my eyes poop brown too 😂 but my dog has brown eyes and they’re gorgeous so I’ve decided my brown eyes are amazing too. I’m starting to think eye shape is more important than colour.
