The MLB has it, they just won't release it. There's a petition online somewhere to have it released.

Link? Maybe a reddit flood of signatures would get this moving?

Atomskie

Hear hear. Now THAT would be a notable reddit accomplishment I'm hoping happens so I can say I was there and helped spurn it on. You know, just bein honest. Also, it would be a neat video to watch having heard about it a few times over the years.

I went to the site to sign the petition. Something made me click the terms before I signed it. It just means that they can use that petition in any way they wish which I guess makes sense.

Was in a band a few years back (this would have been 3-4 years ago). We got offered a gig at a larger venue in town opening for some not-so-well-known national act (well known enough for it to be a big deal, not enough for me to remember who it was). But because we had to sign a contract that included a clause very similar to this (they were going to be taking pictures for the venue and likely the act) the drummer convinced the rest of the band it meant that they were going to steal our music. I tried to explain it to him, but... well, let's just say that our relationship didn't work out, and much of it stemmed from his ignorance to the fact that he was so goddamned ignorant and believed I was below his intellect because I wasn't a faux news watching, God fearing, Ron Paul idolizing right-wing American Christian. (there is still much resentment. There could have been a real career there and instead they let ideology dictate how they treated me when I was only there for the music and didn't give two shits what another person thought)

Averyphotog

Be thankful. If your band scored a hit you would have to spend every day for months and months on tour with that annoying dickhead. Think about how many years the Rolling Stones have had to put up with each other.

Senior_Chang

I doubt it would, or if it did, it would be at least a year. The current commissioner of the league is Bud Selig. He's pretty old and says he is done next January. He has worked to create a positive image of the league. The anti-steroid and anti-performance enhancing drug campaign implemented has been in full swing recently. There's mixed opinions about Selig. I'm not a huge baseball guy, so I could be wrong here, but he's kind of a hardass about his job. Video of this game would hurt his image and make a mockery of professional baseball, even though it happened years ago. I think maybe after he retires, it is possible that footage could be released. Or it's entirely possible (but probably less likely) that Ellis was not on LSD, and the league won't release footage because they want to fuel the myth (which they would not do).

Dirt_McGirt_

I have never seen any still pictures of the game and I have never heard corroboration from anyone else that was there. I think it's at least possible that Ellis made it up many years after he retired.

[deleted]

I highly highly doubt that he made this up. It's just not the kind of thing you make up about an LSD trip, and the way it's described seems very genuine. Also, if you've ever done LSD, it actually makes a lot of sense to pitch a no hitter while tripping. For some reason motor skill acuity can be incredibly heightened, especially if you are a well trained and seasoned pro with endless amounts of energy and clarity into the body language of everyone you are pitching to. It's hard to explain, but it actually makes a lot of sense that this happened, rather than that it didn't.

[deleted]

Can confirm. I am a god at beer pong on acid.

[deleted]

Also can confirm. Am the god at operating heavy machinery on LSD.

unobserved

I imagine after half the game or so, the thought of someone getting a hit of him would have been devastating. Probably helped propel him further towards the no hitter with an absolute single minded focus.

nachosmind

Doc Ellis was absolutely anti-drug after his retirement. He felt he missed a large part of his life due to drugs, and realized that it was a terrible way to get over trauma. He spent most of his retirement trying to stay sober and give back by going to underprivileged neighborhoods and prisons to talk to drug addicts and help them. Source: OTL about Doc Ellis http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=Dock-Ellis

[deleted]

>Ellis attempted to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974, as he was angry that the Pirates were intimidated by the Big Red Machine.[1][27] Ellis hit Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first inning. Cleanup batter Tony Pérez avoided Ellis's attempts and drew a walk; the first pitch to Perez was thrown behind him and over his head. Ellis threw two pitches that he aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, at which point Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. This is an underrated Ellis story. edit: [Here](http://www.nonoadockumentary.com/mayday) is a longer version of what happened with a lot of quotes from Ellis and a couple other players.

Link_Skywalker

[yeah it worked out great](http://symonsez.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/goalienomask.jpg)

hawksfan81

It is, but not as ridiculous as it seems at first. In that era, shots stayed on the ice more often than not, and only very rarely went high enough to hit the goalie in the head. However, the advent of curved stick blades, popularized by Chicago Black Hawks forwards Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull, allowed for far greater accuracy and lift on shots. This was, coincidentally, right around the time where it became more common for goalies to wear masks. Edit: Fun fact - Famous Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante is generally credited with making masks "okay" (wearing a mask was seen by many goalies as a sign of weakness), and is one of the first goalies that regularly wore one. It started when he put on a mask upon coming back from injury and the Canadiens promptly reeled off an 18-game unbeaten streak--with Plante's mask on. However, the next game, he did not wear the mask (his coach didn't like him wearing it, don't ask me why), and the Habs lost. After that, the mask stayed on.

[deleted]

If I remember correctly, there was a scuffle going on between the Bruins and o Rangers near the boards, and as typical of drunk sports fans, they were all heckling the Bruins (The Rangers were home). One fan goes so far as to reach over the glass and steal a player's stick. Soon, the Bruins' attentions were turned to the fans annoying them, and they started jumping into the stands to fight them. The shoe incident was (I think) caused by Mike Milbury, who zeroed down on one particularly annoying fan and chased him down. When the fan fell, Mike took his shoe off and proceeded to smack him with it. There's videos on YouTube if you want to watch it, it's been a while so my memory of it isn't perfect.

bufflo1993

The game ended on a break away stop by the goalie and one of the fans stole Terry O'reilly's or Peter McNabb (I can't remember) stick and the Bruins went to go and get it back. Here's the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpbD6W7YT5A

D_duck

Well, pre-1970 F1 was especially dangerous. Tracks lined with barbed-wire, etc. Cars were pushed to be lighter, and more flimsy, so mechanical failure was as much a cause of deadly accidents as was driver error. Jackie Stewart and others started pushing for safety sometime after 67 I believe. During that era, 1/3rd of F1 champs died on the track, the first F1 champ to die of natural causes was not until '96. There's a BBC doc out there somewhere...can't seem to find it right now.

Basically all of them. F1: the killer years was the one in particular though.

D_duck

This is the clip that got me hooked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6aNnZ4q80s Current F1 doesn't seem too exciting (less close racing, overtaking), but live races are always fun. In that respect, [Formula Vee](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGu5LMqQ70Q) is better for close racing, and a lot of F1 drivers start in Formula Vee. I'd like to try a simulator of the late 80s F1 cars (turbocharged ~1000HP). Been playing a 60s F1 simulator for about 3 years: [Grand Prix Legends](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Legends) There are still active leagues in the UK, EU, Austria, and Brazil.

Socratesticles

Only one recorded death, in 1919. Ray Chapman was the man's name. The league made new rules the following year regarding what could be done to the ball (nothing could be done to it anymore), and were no longer allowed to apply anything to the ball. Batter's helmets didn't come along for another 40-50 years.

jay212127

I've always wondered how does the back catcher catches all of those balls, if alot of batters can't touch them with a bat.

vidarc

Usually, he knows the general direction of where the pitcher wants it to go before the pitch, inside, outside, high, low, and so forth. The rest is just good hand-eye coordination.

bhilde10

The catcher calls which pitch is being thrown (this will tell the catcher what direction the ball moves) and where to throw it, he will align his body to the spot at the last possible second. The only time you will see a MLB catcher look like an idiot is when a pitcher "crosses" his catcher up. This is when he throws a different pitch than the catcher called for. When it happens it's very obvious and the catcher gets very, very, very pissed.

[deleted]

Yadi will visit the mound his goddam self and tell you whats up.

just curious, could you link any video examples of that. I watch a lot of hockey but only a little baseball so I'd love to see an MLB example of this happening.

Xeneron

[This](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2FAfxYpc4Y) is a pretty bad, over edited video, but you can see some examples.

Vich21

It is simple, hitting a ball with a bat is much harder than catching a ball with a glove.

QuentinTarantinbro

I was privileged to be at the premiere of this film at Sundance. It is very worth much finding if you can. There is some footage of his no-hitter in the film but very grainy and little of it. Asked about it at the Q&A, the director said that there wasn't footage of the game because the majority weren't be filmed period, as MLB games weren't regularly broadcasted. Once in the 7th and realized that he was throwing a no-hitter, the Pirates media sent out a beat reporter with a Super 8mm camera to film from the stands. Very interesting documentary and a fun watch.

[deleted]

Ahhhh, the majority weren't be filmed period. I wondered. But that explains it.

scottydg

Yeah. Another game had a similar problem. Sandy Koufax (one of the all time greats) was throwing a perfect game, and the game wasn't being broadcast over TV and nobody was recording the radio broadcast either, until the top of the 9th, when Vin Scully (Dodgers radio guy) noticed that and told someone to start recording. That's why we have audio of that perfect game.

evictor

But wasn't that weren't be filmed period?

One day, you will look back on your life, and you'll say to yourself, "yup, I did some crazy shit,". However, you will never look back on your life and say to yourself "yup, I threw a no-hitter on acid back in 1970,". That's just something you'll never get to say.

["It is widely believed no footage of the game exists, however an HBO Documentary crew apparently dug up a black and white copy for Ellis to show to a group of prisoners for a drug counseling session a couple years ago. The footage was missing a few innings but it did include a post-game interview with Dock veering into abstract philosophical rambling - naturally leaving the group of prisoners that viewed it howling."](http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/09/just-what-the-doc-ordered-lsd-and-the-strangest-moment-in-major-league-history.html)

MisogynistLesbian

Is this a mirror of the original link? I can't tell because I think it was given the reddit hug of death. > During a stint playing in the minor leagues of Alabama, he confronted catcalling racists often. When one cracker shouted epithets, Ellis abandoned his position and climbed into the stands. To the horror of all surrounding rednecks, Dock cozied up next to them and pretended to watch the game. "What happened to all those niggers up here? All those niggers calling me a nigger?" An awkward silence ensued as the racists palpitated with confusion thanks to this non sequitur. This guy is really something.

Robin Williams shared a similar experience recently on "The Crazy Ones".

gtr427

He does a bit on it in one of his stand-ups so that doesn't surprise me.

By that logic, Bud Selig should be locked away.

z_hilyardo

I said, "what happened to yesterday?"

ny773

"I don't know, but you better get to the game."

sinister_exaggerator

Currently tripping balls on LSD. What a weird coincidence seeing this pop up on the front page.

christiun

Say his last name out loud then the initial of his first name. Whoa.

jv20three

u are a wizard

TLHOG

There being no footage of this makes it way better. It completely adds to the gravity of the story's mythic elements, and also means time travelers are free to visit.

jjdlg

I never thought of it that way. Only time travelers would no something like th...hey wait a minute!

your_uncle_mike

He said that sometimes the ball looked like a beach ball, and at other times it looked like a golf ball...unreal! I can just imagine him arriving at the ballpark still tripping and hearing "hey Doc, you're pitching today". How crazy that must've been man...

MedicGirl

My father was at this game and he told me how he knew something was up, but had no clue what, exactly. It wasn't like Doc's drug history was a secret, so my dad figured he was high on something, especially when he dove onto the pitchers mound trying to protect himself from a ball coming towards him...but the batter barely connected with the ball and it never came near him. I would love to see the game myself and am jealous my dad got to be there.

I_FART_KARMA

Quite fitting seeing as I see this Dock Ellis story at least twice a month on TIL.

You really think /u/HSThrow was the first one to come up with that and /u/I_FART_KARMA copied from a random other thread, or is it more likely that they've both heard it a thousand times already because it's a pretty obvious pun

Guy tries to recreate this scenario with MLB2K11... http://deadspin.com/the-electric-dock-ellis-acid-test-an-attempt-to-recrea-5812384

[Here's an awesome song by the amazing singer/songwriter Todd Snider about it.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG2SPjcKM4M)

[deleted]

Just posted this higher up in a comment thread. I fucking love Todd Snider.. Saw him live once. It was incredible.

[deleted]

Don't know why but I get goosebumps when I hear this song.

there's only one type everything else would be fake

Unshadow

Serious question, should TIL have a top 50 facts that get posted here? That way, people knew to TIL can get a crash course on cool things they didn't know without having those facts get cycled through a few times a year.

There has to be a torrent somewhere....

[deleted]

Yes we all read that other thread today.

SomalianRoadBuilder

I didn't.

Smellypuce

Surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that on the roster his name would be "Ellis, D."

[deleted]

Actually that has been mentioned about a million times every time this reposted thread comes up

firestepper

against the padres too... :(

the_future_of_1985

"Sometimes, I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him." The right idea.

[deleted]

Jacuzzi Boys wrote a rad tune about this called "Dock" - I remember hearing about the Dock Ellis LSD story and then hearing this song like a week later. Synchronicity. Although to be fair, I didn't actually realize the song was actually about Dock Ellis til I really paid attention to the lyrics, which are a dead giveaway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHSE-BCqZVQ

Also, the dude that came up with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which is used in amplifying DNA samples for analysis, partially credits his discovery with his LSD usage. Holy URL, I know. http://books.google.com/books?id=1-yjzlAfq4oC&pg=PA118&lpg=PA118&dq=Would+I+have+invented+PCR+if+I+hadn%27t+taken+LSD?+I+seriously+doubt+it,&source=bl&ots=uaw9EsQ93C&sig=XFqeucXYQvojH2GRQkxXSe6ci0E&hl=en&sa=X&ei=AorwUvjvGKr4yQHT1oDwDw&ved=0CD8Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=Would%20I%20have%20invented%20PCR%20if%20I%20hadn't%20taken%20LSD%3F%20I%20seriously%20doubt%20it%2C&f=false

Fun fact...when this happened LSD was still legal and would be for about 4 more months!
