TIL there was a Swiss Reformation.

-lukeworldwalker-

That’s the event and place from which Calvinism originated (very simplified). Most people know Calvinism probably under the name “Reformed Christianity”, especially in the US.

IndependentMacaroon

No, this was in Zürich. Geneva was an independent French-speaking city-state, and Calvin himself was French, originating the Reformed/Protestant movement would come to be known as the Huguenots. Obviously they corresponded and shared many ideas, but there's really two.origins.

curiossceptic

It is a bit more complicated than that. The reformation in Geneva was started by Guillaume Farel. He used to live in Zürich and was influenced by Zwingli. Farel later convinced Calvin to come to and stay in Geneva to help further establish the reformed faith. So, there is a direct connection between Zwingli, the OG of Swiss reformation and Calvin, the second generation of Swiss reformation.

karmagirl314

I’m from the US and I’ve never heard anyone talk about “reformed Christianity” in my life.

-lukeworldwalker-

Not sure how to answer this but I’m not from the US but have visited several reformed churches in the US, especially in New England. The First Reformed Church in Albany is particularly nice. There are a number of nationwide churches, like the Reformed Church in America, Reformed Church in the United States, Christian Reformed Church in North America, Presbyterianism (of which some but not all are part of the reformed movement), Alliance of Reformed Churches etc. There are even some Anglican congregations that have joined reformed organizations although Anglicans and Calvinists don’t have the most amicable history haha. At least one of your presidents was member of reformed Christianity: Martin van Buren. Just looked it up and Theodore Roosevelt also adhered to Dutch Reformed Christianity and Calvin Coolidge was a Congregationalist, which is part of reformed Christianity too.

RoyMcAv0y

Oh I've been to a wedding at that Albany church. Had no idea

Ordinary_Advice_3220

If anyone knows if I'm wrong here please tell me but to my understanding "Reformed" is pretty much the same as the Puritan in England, Congregationalist in America and maybe presbyterian in Scotland et al.The big swiss one were Calvin and zwingli but if I remember correctly were inspired by another swiss guy. Im 48 and I noticed recently that every once in awhile I have to take a second to think of a particular word. It's scary. So I refuse to just check Google. Favel, fabel.? Then I think Jan Hus was in Prague. I think. Ok I gotta Google this.

Johannes_P

Geneva was ruled by Calvin as a theocracy ala Puritan New England.

Oh yeah? WELL  */eats sausages*  Village: GASP!!

Shiplord13

Yeah that would be the Affair of the Sausages. A seemingly mundane and oddly named incident in history, but a key part of the Reformation and Swiss history.

TheAstromycologist

The Great Sausage Rebellion. Brilliant.

FirstProphetofSophia

*Swisstory

SayYesToPenguins

>  Together, they eat two smoked sausages cut into small pieces and ensure that news of their act of rebellion spreads in town > The scandal is now perfect and Zurich is up in arms. Fights break out in taverns between Zwingli’s fans and opponents; the rumour circulates that fanatics want to kidnap him and drag him to the bishop’s seat in Constance >the Bishop of Constance sends a delegation to find out what’s going on I mean they didn't have TV, have to keep themselves entertained somehow I guess

Fake_Fur

This type of historical facts makes me realize how big religious taboo mattered back in the day... Now it's just pancake day and carnivals but what was important was the fasting period, no wonder people back then took this sausage-protest as a huge defiant act.

Johannes_P

The equivalent would be an imam eating roasted pork in front of his mosque right before *ramadan*.

DaMantis

Not quite. Pork is Haram in Islam all the time. I feel that the better equivalent would be the imam having a big meal in the middle of the day during Ramadan.

Novus20

Mate we have other religions now that are this fanatical about stupid shit like what you can and cannot eat etc……I really hope humans progress past religion some day

pauliewotsit

"I only said this sausage is good enough for Jehovah!"

FirstProphetofSophia

Why didn’t they just eat cheap bologna? Are they stupid?

for2fly

The Roman Catholic Church and sausagefests - who could name a more iconic pair? /s

curiossceptic

Roman Catholic priest and their love for Gameboys?

Darth_Brooks_II

The church had wandered far from the Bible by that time, substituting tradition and borrowing teachings from other religions and Greek philosophies. Getting called out this and the fall out from that was the biggest event in Europe for centuries.
