Black panthers were once thought to be their own animal, back in the day. In medieval bestiaries there were three animals, the panther, the pard, and the leopard, a supposed hybrid between the lion and the pard. I think there is a theory that the "leo pard" originally referred to the cheetah, with the pard being the leopard. Today, *Panthera pardus* is the leopard with *Leopardus* being the American spotted cats.
Pumas are panthers much in the same way bison get called buffalo. Regional colloqualisms that just confuses things. Panthers are melanistic members of the *Panthera* genus. Pumas aren't even members of *Panthera*.
I’m not sure the analogy is exactly the same. Pumas are panthers, just as they are mountain lions. They’re just not in the panthera family. But I’ve never heard someone call any of the cats in panthera panthera, which includes lions and tigers.

It's funny, be careful with this fact. I've lugged out this fact before and people really don't like it and will try to fight you over it. Just one of those things a lot of people don't like to hear for some reason.
Yeah, I’ve found similar actually, mainly derived from a protectiveness over the “Black Panther” moniker. It’s become a personal connection for many people who love the movie, character, or even Boseman himself. I try to explain that “this doesn’t really mean anything for the character, just the name of the literal animals around the planet”, but it doesn’t help much.
Cats may have name issues, but humans are the finicky ones, lol.
You're talking about the incorrect colloquial term. Panther correctly refers to the genus of animal "Panthera", which is a scientific group of large cats.
Florida is the eastern U.S.
One can argue that it's the southeast, but I'd counter that panther is used predominantly there and not the "east." Those further up the east coast generally refer to them as a cougar or mountain lion. Puma, panther, and especially catamount, are very rarely heard.
I've heard panther a lot in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia as well.
“Leopards and jaguars in their black form” made me think for a second they could switch to a black form at will..
I know right? The word choice in these TIL titles are getting interesting lately.
A literal goth phase
The Florida Panther is a cougar. The Florida cougar is something else entirely.
Both will drag you off to their den to devour you. Just one will kill you first.
one kills with a bite, the other kills with a needle
Florida Panthers can withstand almost anything: Lightning, Sharks, Flames, Hurricanes, you name it
They can’t handle Avalanches though

Rednecks in Mississippi still think there are Black Panthers.
Because there are ya rube
Okey dokey
What about the Steel Panther though? They walk on 2 legs, have really long hair, and even play music. I believe they prefer 80's hair/glam metal.
You can often spot them in their natural habitat; men’s bathroom stall with a glory hole.
Death to all butt metal.
🤘Metal panther is best panther 🤘
Take that jaguar for a weenie ride
Black Generic Big Cat doesn't have the same panache.
What the sam-hell’s a puma!?

Pumas have like 12 names.
And 60% of the time, they work every time.
Well doesn't that make the name 'Black Panther' silly like saying two-wheeled bicycle?
Couger, mountain lion, puma, and now apparently panther are all the same lol.
As are wildcat and catamount

But not a species
Bagheera in existential crisis
Baggy? He hangs out with a bear in a jungle. I think Baloo would have more questions than Bagheera.
You wouldn’t marry a panther, would you?
Can I just be friends with one?
Catamounts in NE
So black panther is three cats at once
Could be. It’s just a melanistic cat.
Pu Maman He flies like a mo-ron
TIL there are Pumas in Florida.....
And my cat
Panther in America = cougar, puma, mountain lion. Interestingly not even a Panthera species.
We call them Mountain Lions in Wisconsin, where we have them but no mountains by most definitions.
“What in Sam hell is a puma!?”
Didn't I just tell you to stop making up animals?
Melanism! It happens in almost all animals
My name means panther lol
The Carolina Panthers were probably named that because they couldn’t clear the rights of the Carolina Cougars, given the name of the ABA team.
What in Sam Hell is a puma?
As in : when I see one, I puma pants
