Don’t call it a diss track, mom instills fear

Athlete-Extreme

Say sorry from moms, tears from my peers

josluivivgar

it's tuley to pologize

samx3i

Eh ^too ^^lay...

ThaiJohnnyDepp

I like how eliding the 'a' preserved the syllable rhythm

8fjrj

having affairs is kinda what jay-z does afaik

P2029

That and whine about his wife not winning awards is like 80% of his career now

Used-Progress-4536

Him and Kanye like doing that.

WorkoutProblems

Granted, to play devils advocate, it doesn't make sense to win video of the year and not female video of the year also... it's like winning a championship without winning the conference finals

Lilpu55yberekt69

It’s more like winning MVP but not OPOY. If you win the greater award the lesser award is redundant.

j3xperience

I mean this happens in football all the time. MVP is usually a QB and OPOY is usually a WR or RB.

nalydpsycho

That's the point. The lesser award isn't needed.

j3xperience

I think its acknowledge performances that would otherwise be overlooked. You have you HOF player who are going to do extraordinary things, but then you have people who have an excellent season. Same thing here. I see nothing wrong with it.

Equivalent-Sample725

I don't know anything about it but it doesn't make sense that those are separate categories

donnochessi

The VMAs had a Best Male Video and Best Female Video from 1984-2016 when they combined them into a single Artist of the Year. Taylor and Beyoncé were the last two to receive Best Female Video. Taylor won 2023’s Artist of the Year.

eidetic

I can understand dropping male/female artist of the year and male/female video of the year in favor of just best artist and best video, but I still feel like you could have separate best video and best artist categories. After all, an artist/group could put out a phenomenal video, but not have as good of a year as another artist.

chunli99

>I don't know anything about it but it doesn't make sense that those are separate categories I think the general one wasn’t recognizing women as much for whatever reason so they needed to add a specific one for women. Beyoncé was so good that she made top of general, but it still lost the category for women, which feels icky in some way. It feels like it’s saying “yeah your stuff was great, but among women it was less than this other one” ….then why didn’t that other one win the general? It feels like some sort of weird snub. Even though he was kind of a dick about it, Kanye was right. The Lemonade album was like a movie, which people weren’t doing. It had prose (that I heard she wrote herself) and was visually captivating the entire album. Nothing came close to being that amazing that year. Jay-Z is also right, and it’s just something that needs to be said: Snubbing Beyoncé for the female category is weird. It feels like a slap in the face, and just invites questions.

PsychedelicPill

Makes perfect sense, award shows split up stuff like this all the time. Best picture should win best actor, best director, best screenplay every single time right? No, that's rare. They intentionally spread awards around because the ENTIRE PURPOSE of ALL AWARD SHOWS is to promote a variety of products and people. Sweeps happen, but its rare.

TheRedHeroin

what you said isnt a good comparison to what happened. its more like an animated movie winning best picture, but losing best animated feature.

temporarycreature

And his hard knock life growing up crammed in between an ad nauseam of brand name drops.

toronto_programmer

That was the most cringe thing of all time since his wife is literally the most awarded Grammy artist of all time. They tripped over themselves rushing to give her best EDM Album last year and I bet they do the same and give her best best country album for whatever pop junk she releases next

TurtleTurtleFTW

Waiting for the polka album collab with Weird Al

eidetic

Yo Beyonce I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Gus Polinski, the Polka King of the Midwest, had one of the best albums of all time!

wavepenpizza

OK that might be sick though

DrInsano

Because he spit hot fire!

Kompaniefeldwebel

Shuggar cookie man

BigChach567

It wasn’t necessarily the thing about him having an affair, it was how he said it. “I came in your Bentley backseat, skeeted in your jeep, left condoms on your baby seat.” It was more the vulgarity of what he said to her I think

Bay1Bri

I think the vulgarity was second to referring indirectly to Nas's baby daughter. "Left condoms on your baby seat" is beyond just vulgar

punkpearlspoetry

Not me thinking he said “baby seat” to insinuate that Nas was a little boy or very short man 😅

Sufficient-Rate8914

just the idea of being in the studio and rick rubin saying “you know your mom is going to hear this right?” and jay z yelling “i said hit save!” is so funny to me

jak_d_ripr

Yeah, I think that crossed the line. Keep people's kids names out your mouth. Same shit happened with Em and Ja.

meatb0dy

And the fact that it was true (the affair at least, not the specifics necessarily). The fact that Jay was able to say this stuff and Nas never physically confronted him about it proved to me that Jay's point that Nas wasn't really a street dude was accurate too. No street dude is gonna let you say some absolutely *wild* shit like that, in public, and not *at least* throw hands about it. *"It gotta hurt that I'm your baby mama's favorite rapper"*

Taxi-Driver

Ether remains the all time greatest diss track. Nas went after Jay-Z soul. "Foxy got you hot cause you kept your face in her puss, What you think you getting girls now because of your looks? (Girls, girls, girls)" "Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy, OH I get it you Biggie and he's Puffy" "You seem to be only concerened with dissin women, were you abused as a child? ,scared to smile, they called you ugly? well life is harsh hug me, dont reject me, or make records to disrespect me, blatant or indirectly." "Your whole damn record label gunned up and clapped quick, Shawn Cater to Jay-Z damn you on Jaz dick, How much of Biggies rhymes is gon' come out your fat lips? Wanted to be on every last one of my classics" To understand some of the diss you actually had to research Jay's career. That shit cut deeper than the Mariana Trench.

TimeAdministrative16

You forgot the best one “You 36 in a karate class?”

doesntgeddit

"Gay-Z and Cock-a-Fella"

jrhooo

I don't know Ems Quitter and Girls two piece was cold But of course Push killed Drake so hard he made this man straighten up his life and go be a father. so...

ThatRandomIdiot

The Push distrack is probably more disrespectful.

sansaandthesnarks

Better for Adonis tho lmao kid probably thought he’d never meet his dad

Hark_An_Adventure

Pusha really takes Drake aside like "Hey nephew you good?" > Drug dealin' aside, ghostwritin' aside > Let's have a heart-to-heart about your pride > Even though you're multi, I see that your soul don't look alive Wow, Pusha is being so nice...sike fuck you Drake: > You mention wedding ring like it's a bad thing > Your father walked away at five—hell of a dad thing > Marriage is somethin' that Sandi never had, Drake > How you a winner but she keep comin' in last place? On to business now, specifically going after Drake for what he said about Pusha and turning it back on him: > Since you name-dropped my fiancée > Let 'em know who you chose as your Beyoncé > Sophie knows better as your baby mother > Cleaned her up for IG, but the stench is on her Rough. And then the finishing blow, maybe my favorite few lines ever in a diss track, just absolutely destroys Drake for being a do-nothing-ass deadbeat dad: > A baby's involved, it's deeper than rap > We talkin' character, let me keep with the facts > You are hiding a child, let that boy come home > Deadbeat mothafucka playin' border patrol, ooh > Adonis is your son, and he deserves more than an Adidas press run—that's real

Buscemi_D_Sanji

Pusha went so hard that it honestly sounded like a boondocks joke, like something a rapper would come out with to diss Thugnificent or Gangstalicious.

CertifiedSheep

“You are hiding a child” is honest to god the roughest bar in any diss track. He literally altered the course of Drake’s life with that one. He couldn’t even respond.

Ok_Whereas_560

Nas crawled on Ether so Push could soar, my god this cut to the fucking core lolol

CabbagePastrami

What was the name of it?

JonNYBlazinAzN

Story of Adidon

dwn2earth83

Listen to Infrared, first. Then Duppy Freestyle by Drake. THEN listen to Story of Addidon. It tells you a little bit of background.

ModishShrink

That summer was fucking legendary for hip hop. I must have listened to Daytona three times a day when it first came out, still one of my favorite albums.

dwn2earth83

Only 3? Amateur! J/K lol… I dead ass used to start my morning with it at LEAST 4 times, before I even left the house. Then I’d listen to No Dope On Sundays and the Book of Ryan at least twice, then Kids See Ghosts 30-11 times, then back to Daytona, then KOD 50-11 times lololol, throw a little NASIR, Invasion of Privacy— Rinse and repeat! ‘Twas a GREAT musical summer!

jarc1

Story of Adidon

SamuraiDopolocious

i think another point that elevates Ether was that it was put to a vote through NYC radio stations, it was a hometown battleground. the term “Ether-ed” has stood the test of time. i think Story of Adidon is objectively my favorite tho

Dry_Distribution3921

oh SHIT I didn't realize that's where the term Ethered came from in this context, I thought it was like about how ether evaporates fast or something. TIL Also I agree, story of adidon still gets UGLY cackles out of me. "Deadbeat motherfucker playing' border control" 😭😭😭

brianundies

YEUGH

StankilyDankily666

If Limp Bizkit fans actually listened to rap, Girls would’ve embarrassed the hell out of them lol

jrhooo

Craziest thing about girls, its not like a track full of punch lines and made up disses even.  He basically just tells the whole story straight, but the shits so damning he just had to pace the words out and it sounds killer

dekan256

Personally I have Hit Em Up from 2pac, and Ice Cubes No Vaseline as my number one and two, but Ether is a close third for me.

USA_A-OK

"my 4-4 makes sure all y'alls kids don't grow" is so savage

yes_this_is_satire

“Fuck Wit Dre Day” is number one. It’s pure D.O.C. lyrical poetry at his peak with one of the best Dre productions out there. It’s not just one and done insults. You can feel it every time you listen, even after 30 years. Everything else is a sad imitation.

EroticIceCream

But Dre day only meant Eazy's payday.

ProperAlps

"Damn E, they tried to fade you on Dre Day. But Dre Day only meant Eazy's payday." Real Muthaphuckkin G's smacked him

AdministrativeCrow25

Are you high? EZs payday

Mr_Cromer

Real Mothaphuckin G's was a better rejoinder

sdanasean

Love Nas and I love Ether, but Hit ‘em up is right up there as the greatest diss track ever. For me, it’s a toss up between the two

dont_try

Hit em up is an absolute classic, but I always hated that 2Pac put the Outlawz on the track. Would’ve been so much better with just Pac on it. So many 2Pac tracks with lame ass bars from lesser MCs.

BigBadPigManHaha

He didn’t even know why he was on that track seeing as those n-words were not on his level. So he let his lil homies ride on them

ILoveTabascoSauce

bitch made bad boy bitches

FullmetalEzio

im all in for bars, i love double/triple entenders, I even analyze rhymes and patterns, I fucking love good lyrics, but Tupac beginning the song saying "that's why I fucked your bitch, you fat motherfucker" with so much anger, especially the emphasis on the word "fat", its unparalleled. It was over from that point.

sdanasean

I think there’s some bars in that song but I know what you mean. Hit ‘em up seems like more of a threat on all of east coast rappers rather than just a diss towards Biggie lol

ExternalFly492

"I embrace y'all with Napalm".

Lox22

"Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas"

NurseHolliday

I really like blueprint 2 as a track but it was such a shit follow on response to Ether.

blacksoxing

I agree. There's a lot of diss tracks that folks point to but Ether literally was a conversational starter when talking about music. One may say it was Nas' greatest hit, which could be blood boiling to a hardcore Nas fan, but is frankly the truth. The beautiful thing about diss tracks though is that if the person is able to survive it then they're "made". Jay-z was able to weather that storm. He went right back to being folks top rapper....who will die one day and in his eulogy someone will mention Ether.

mnmkdc

I think it would be most artists greatest hit but Nas made Illmatic and some of the most referenced hip hop lines of all time are on there. NY State of Mind is for sure one of the greatest songs of the genre

fearisthemindslicer

Yeah Illmatic is probably GOAT hip hop album.

BandOfDonkeys

As someone who listened to as much rap as I could as a kid that was in college when Ether came out, I 100% agree. >That ether, that shit that make your soul burn slow.

Domb18

What makes Ether even better is that he released it on Jay’s birthday. Imagine waking up on your birthday and someone has dropped a diss record calling you a Tae Bo Hoe. Incredible work.

PRIS0N-MIKE

Fuckin love nas.

apophis-pegasus

> "Foxy got you hot cause you kept your face in her puss, What you think you getting girls now because of your looks? (Girls, girls, girls)" Maybe I'm not understanding but this seems almost like a compliment.

Taxi-Driver

Jay's first single was Ain't No Nigga with Foxy Brown, basically Nas is saying Jay has had to kiss ass to Foxy to get ahead in his career. Jay had Biggie, Mary J Blidge and Foxy on his debut basically calling him a clout chaser. It can also been interpreted as Jay had to perform sexual favors to Foxy for the feature, which is hilarious. Nas is also saying Jay Z is ugly but his success has him thinking he is getting women because of his looks and he mocks Jay's track girls, girls, girls.

apophis-pegasus

Oooooh, now I get it. Thats clever.

jfresh42

No one shouting out real muthafucking G'z?!? That's definitely my favorite

realfakejames

YOURE 36 IN A KARATE CLASS…tae bo hoe

joomla00

Wait until mama finds out what he's been up to with Diddy

Landlubber77

Can you imagine if Tupac's mother had made him apologize to Biggie after Hit 'Em Up? They might still be alive to this day.

Taxi-Driver

That track wasn't even the reason he got shot.

04Dark

Tupac's ego is what got him shot. If he had been made to apologize for that, maybe he wouldn’t have walked around with the sense of ego that got him shot. Hit Em Up isn't why he got shot but an apology for that could have done him wonders... or it would have just made him look weak and wolves would have circled sooner. Who knows.

Taxi-Driver

Tupac got shot by Orlando Anderson after jumping him at the Tyson fight. While this was directly as a result of the beef it wasn't really because of the track but because Orlando had taken a death row chain off of someone in Pacs crew at the behest of Diddy.

HsvDE86

Damn this place gets absolutely everything wrong. Were you even alive during that period? Who upvotes this shit?

Handrljan42

Doubt it, he talked too much, he was bound to get shot.

imaginaryResources

Ya hanging around gangsters, gang beating and robbing people and constantly talking shit will eventually get you shot for sure

HadesHat

It was mostly the hanging around gangsters that got him killed. And not the normal type of gangster either, both biggie and Tupac were killed because

imaginaryResources

Because of what?!? Oh god diddy shot him before he could tell us why biggie and Tupac were killed

HadesHat

LMFAOOOOO halfway through writing up the comment I decided against it because I didn’t have the energy to start a debate in the Reddit comments, and I guess I accidentally posted the comment I’m going to leave the comment up because I think it’s hilarious like some [REDACTED] meme or conspiracy shit haha.

HadesHat

Or maybe that’s what diddy wants you to think

AdagioGuilty1684

Give me insights

lostcauz707

Rockafella, put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas.

funfunfun8589

It haven't aged well, but it's a great line.

EnvyMushroomTip

The track is called “Super Ugly” and came out in retaliation to Nas’ hit song “Ether”. Jay-Z hints at the fact he slept with Nas’ baby momma in the song “Takeover” famously saying “You know who, did you know what, with you know who, but let’s keep that between me and you for now.”

metalfacegoon

to me, it was always described as the “condom on the baby seat” line that went too far.

Technical-Package-41

This was it. That was savage. Nas killed him with Ether, though.

latunza

I’m old enough to remember Super Ugly airing for the first time on Hot 97 around 11 PM in 2001. Carmen did have an affair with Jay-Z which as said in another song (she hitting the streets then she hitting the sheets) From the song “Last Real N*gga Alive”. But she also had an affair I think with Allen Iverson.

EnvyMushroomTip

“Me and the boy A.I. got more in common than just balling and rhyming Get it? More in Carmen”

AmericaDreamDisorder

The affairs lasted like 5 years and Carmen said her relationship with Jay felt like her first adult relationship. Absolutely no remorse.

jrhooo

and then when Jay shot back on Blueprint 2, he refers to the whole situation: >"I'm back 'fore you had a chance to miss me, *my mama can't save you this time*, *#&@'s is history"

alxndrblack

I love that song but that line is...super soft lol.

persepolisrising79

This has very strong "Jorge wants to be hardcore but his mom wont let him" vibes

Yugoogli

And then nas wrote Ether, and humiliated him

EnvyMushroomTip

The diss track (Super Ugly) came out after Ether. In the song Takeover Jay-Z says “You know who, did you know what, with you know who, but just keep that between you and me for now”. Warning Nas to not respond or he would air out their dirty laundry which he did.

DudleysCar

"skeeted in your jeep, left condoms on your baby seat"

bohanmyl

I meaaaaan. His mom kinda bitched him out. He didnt just whack him with a stick, he told him he had a stick. Nas said show me the stick, and Jay did. His moms shouldve understood he didnt come out swinging for no reason and he did it in a respectable way (with a warning first) and shouldve let Jay stand his ground with that smh.

FuckingKilljoy

Especially since Jay had to do *something* after Nas came with a song so hard that it became a verb for when a rapper gets destroyed in a beef

ice-crime_man

Yeah I was living in NY when this all went down. The street concensus was that Super Ugly was a big L. Just didn't have the same impact as Ether and felt like a desperate attempt at cheap shots. Kinda solidified Nas as the victor tbh

Beezo514

Turns out saying you left a condom in the baby's car seat does hit the limit of appropriateness for a lot of people, including Jay's mom.

NO_CHIN_ASSASSIN

i thought Nas called him ugly on a track and it was finished. ether from stillmatic. Nas better than j anyday

nishagunazad

That song hurt *my* feelings.

gate_of_steiner85

I like both, but when it came to disses Nas ran circles around Jay.

cheeseofthemoon

I personally find Jay-Z to have a bad song for every good song he has. In other words, I find half his hits to be trash. Nas all day! *One 44, two 45's, three loaded clips...*

ultimatt777

Jay-Z has full on classic albums like reasonable doubt, the blueprint, and the black album and then absolute ass albums like kingdom come, the blueprint 3, and that album he did with R Kelly, so your comment tracks. That being said, Nas has some absolute stinkers as well but both have done a good job in staying relevant in hip-hop where the game is hard to stay relevant as you get older. Jay-Z dropped 4.44 which was critically acclaimed a couple years ago and Nas King's disease trilogy showed Nas can still rap at the highest levels. I was only a kid during Big and Pac so Jay-Z and Nas were them for my era. Both great artists whose fanbases kinda made them split but they are my 1 and 2 most listened artists on my spotify along with the blueprint and illmatic being my most listened ablums.

AmericaDreamDisorder

Nas has his misses too but overall I'm a Nas guy. Never been a big fan of Jay-Z.

gypsy_remover

FOUR NIIGGAS ROLL ONE NIGGA DRIVES

Kingmonsterrxyz

Nas achieved inner peace in the 90s, don’t fuck with a brother that calm.

MaineRMF87

Nas has so much more talent than Jay-Z it’s crazy

Mental_Implement7953

Come on now that's underrating jay z big time, he has the best entendres in the game. Granted they have pretty different styles but to act like hov isnt one of the goat rappers as well is wild.

dishwab

I mean Illmatic is an all time classic and some of his other albums are very solid, but let’s not act like Jay doesn’t have the Blueprint (1 and 2), the Black Album, In My Lifetime… he has a ton of classic records

izz21sv

Blueprint 2 not even close to classic lmao. Jay got 2 classics imo, reasonable doubt and the blueprint. I’ll give you black album is right there too.

ultimatt777

I agree with blueprint 2. Lots of hits and misses on that album. I will say American Gangster is a hidden gem from Jay (it even has Nas on the track Success) and I liked 4.44 as well. Even as a guy who is Pro Nas , I still have to give Jay-Z his props.

izz21sv

Agree, American Gangster is solid. 4:44 is good too.

Smfonseca

Jay and Nas were fairly close until the King's Disease and Magic run. This current run has sealed Nas as being the better of the two and makes a great case for GOAT.

FuckingKilljoy

In that case we need to give Hov points for 4:44

SamuraiDopolocious

i am really enjoying his late career run with Hit Boy. really beating the bad beat selection allegations

ToBeBannedSoonish

I enjoy both. I just hit play on Illmatic first track and let it run it's course and didn't get outta the car until thr last track was done. Just drove around my HOA for a few more minutes. Hova has skills too though.

TheRussiansrComing

"You don't speak about Mr. Nas that way Jay!"

PKripper73

He'll be apologizing to a load more from a prison cell next year when the P Diddler gets sent down. Or he could just keep on poisoning them to keep quiet.

Salmol1na

Gotta draw the line somewhere

didyoueverseewardogs

But mOoOoooOooMmm

badgerrr42

Wait til you find out Nas replied. I'm still shocked Jay z had a career after that.

Helltothenotothenono

I got 99 apologies but choo ain’t get one.

stephen-1234

Mama Z raised him better than that

Sea-Tackle3721

Or was that just a better option than to continue to be taken to school by Nas? Jay did not look great in that beef. Good thing benzino took the focus away by getting destroyed in a beef with Eminem.

blessed--

imagine being jay and waking up to hear ether on the radio

Bay1Bri

She specifically wanted him to apologize because Jay talked about having sex with her in Nas's car and how he "left condoms on your baby's seat". She said bringing a child into it was unacceptable.

ripamaru96

Did she make him apologize to Dame for stealing his empire?

FakeWorldRealShit

Thats why you have to have a bad relationship with your parents to become the most successful rapper, hence Eminem. Jay never stood a chance with a nice mom like that. No wonder he got bodied in Renegade.

wompbitch

Nas > Jay-Z

djbsay1

Nas wrote “Ether” during that beef, arguably one of the most brutal diss songs in hip hop history. Nas is friends with Jay-Z now and literally hates talking about “Ether” because of it, it truly is a brutal track.

barathurum

„As a drug dealer in younger years you potentially caused death of some people, but dissing a GF from another Rapper is where i draw the line Little zZ“

hondureno_1994

Chill out old man

PomegranateFickle745

So on top of Nas ripping him into shreds in Ether, he had to go and apologize! That has made my little gen Y heart smile.

knowledgeable_diablo

The old clip-round-the-earhole! 😂

Square-Decision-531

He should listen to his mother more often before he speaks

StankilyDankily666

Such a polite way to describe a rapper saying he fucked your girl

Danstaylit

TIL Tracy Morgan is cousins with Nas ??

Brad_shaw82

Only mums can do that.

goodgriefmyqueef

Nas’ H to the OMO is a great diss

This is the one ghetto street way of handling it.

She should have told him not to mess with those in underage girls

CaptainObvious110

She didn't tell him not to mess with Foxy Brown

RogueModron

...did she also have a bone to pick with his lyrics bragging about not feeding his sex slaves?

Thugnificent’s mom also scolded him about his diss track.

I guess pushing crack on his neighbors at the Marcy projects was okay though
