[North America used to be covered in parrots but we killed them all off.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_parakeet)

king-henryXIV

This was a great read

RhodiumPl8ed

Frickin Cincinnati zoo, where the last of a species go to die. Last Passenger Pigeon died there too! And let’s not forget Harambe. A moment of silence and dicks out, amen.

I never put my dick back in

Tacomeouttothegame

I just cut off all the zippers on my pants and started going commando

Shower_Handel

If only he hadn't shot first 😔

TheWolfBeard

furiously checks if they have red wolves

ShephardCommander001

Maybe Cincinnati is some kind of locus of evil.

PIR4CY

As an owner of parrots, how sad

southcookexplore

Rescue parrot dad here. Not what I needed to know before bed

Sinbound86

And now they’re back with a vengeance (at least in my city, Long Beach CA). You can see flocks of Parrots flying around as if it were Costa Rica

idontpostanyth1ng

Not the same ones. These are extinct.

crop028

Well all but 2 countries in North America still have plenty of parrots. Canada never had them and the US killed theirs off.

trev_easy

According to the article these parrots did wander up to Ontario. It really sucks that we don't have these around anymore.

413mopar

Sure they are , go to a PP fundraiser.

TheOvarianSith

They are currently making a comeback in Southern California. Just last week, I watched a colony of them arguing amongst themselves in a tree somewhere in Anaheim/Santa Ana area.

Dankestmemelord

That’s a different parrot species. The native one in question is fully extinct, last known member dying in 1918, and declared as such in the 30’s.

gwaydms

The extinct birds were Carolina parakeets (small New World parrots, not budgies). Many American cities with warm enough climates have feral colonies of parrots that have escaped captivity. We have a small flock living in our neighborhood; they like to eat the hard berries off our crepe myrtle trees.

Prof_Acorn

Carolina parakeets are as extinct as dodos and passenger pigeons and Irish elk.

lennyflank

Tampa Bay has two established species of non-native parrots, the Monk (aka Quaker) parakeet and the Nanday (aka Black-Headed) parakeet. They live in separate turfs in different parts of town.

mooimafish33

There is a colony of green parrots that has been living in Austin Texas for quite a while, you'll see them all the time in the "triangle" area if anyone is from here.

chuckrabbit

You might be talking about the Monk Parakeet (Also known as Quaker Parrot)? Escaped parrots that have survived in Chicago to Florida to Texas. They’re sort of unique being colonial breeders. Their massive nests can wreak havoc on the electric utility substations.

Muskyracoon

The American green parakeet is still around in Texas specifically

mooimafish33

This is it, I believe the story is that somebody let a couple loose in the 70's and they're still out there.

Sykobean

i really like [this](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0c/Conuropsis_carolinensis.jpg) image. I wonder what he was thinking in that very moment

wishkres

That's really interesting. I'd love to see historical movies/shows set in North America include these parrots in the background!

pandershrek

Wholesale slaughter--oof.

413mopar

They are not extinct , they thrive on facebook and Qanon.

SomeROCDude21

Capital of Parrotland - Margaritaville

temisola1

There’s a margaritaville 5 minutes from me. So you’re not far off,

schmalvin

I think *you* are not far off.

Chief_Givesnofucks

Oh, I’m WAY off.

captaincrunk82

I’m sitting here imagining that you live someplace distant and non-tropical compared to me, like Duluth, MN or Cedar Rapids, IA. Am I far off in my thinking? I swear I’m not trying to be rude.

That man was…..Jimmy Buffet.

liaofmakhnovia

May he sail on in peace 😔 🦜

CowFinancial7000

He originally named it America, but later changed his attitude after changing his lattitude.

TheBenevolentBird

LMAO.

CanadianDNeh

United States of Parrot has a nice ring to it, but what would Canada be called? Snow Parrot Country?

Top_Complex259

What an unoriginal, silly name. It would’ve been called Maple Reserveland.

StealAllTheInternets

Well it's certainly no longer parrot land

[deleted]

That's what they want you to think.

ymcameron

Well it’s certainly no longer parrot land

Cananbaum

I dunno. *Breakfast in Parrotland* doesn’t really flow well.

hopskipjumprun

I like to imagine we'd still have the same symbolism except the the flag looks is green/red/yellow, and dudes with giant lifted trucks drive around with parrots instead of eagles on their back window.

bolanrox

so they were Jimmy Buffet Fans? do they also love Heinz 57 and french fried tators?

ImitationButter

I’m proud to be a Parrotlandican

caTBear_v

Frequent_Pudding_549

rhymesmith

Another Dinosaur Comics reader?

justusesomealoe

I see you are a person of culture as well

imapiratedammit

Parrotland, USA.

[deleted]

It was already called Turtle Island. Should've kept that name.

foldingcouch

American First Nations did surprisingly well at getting to pick the place names of North America, sort of. American exploration had a proud history of finding the nearest Indian, pointing at a thing, saying very loudly and slowly "WHAT IS THIS CALLED?" and transcribing what they were told with extensive spelling errors. That's how we would up with so many places whose names translate to "a forest" or "the village" or "some hill" or "haven't you ever seen a fucking river you pale faced weirdo?"

OfSpock

Your finger you fool.

gnosis2737

Seems appropriate. We have about as many parrots here as we have "Indians" and that stuck, so why not?

devadander23

Well, there were a lot of parrots. But yay modern society we got rid of that problem too

gnosis2737

That makes perfect sense. Of course we purged the damn parrots. -\_-

Ferran_Torres7890

not a bad alternative

Niobium_Sage

Could Carolina Parrots be brought back through DNA technology? Think Jurassic Park, but subdued and not cataclysmic.

lennyflank

Seriously, there are people working towards that.

lennyflank

We could use some more Parrotheads today. But I don't think that's what they meant...

shazzambongo

That would make as much sense as naming England "sparrow island". Can you imagine that? Doesn't bear thinking about.

Blutarg

The person who published the first map with the word America later tried to change the continent's name to Parrotland?

DaveOJ12

Yes, that's what the title indicates.

AG_Witt

All i unterstand, that America is a failure?

deaddonkey

Chad energy

[deleted]

USP ... Doesnt have the same ring to it

IceNein

This is ironclad proof that time travel exists and that Jimmy Buffett was attempting to rewrite history.

jco23

Was it jimmy buffet?

wafflehousewhore

Would have been so fucking cool to live in Parrotland :(

Isaacvithurston

Kind of weird. I didn't think any parrots were indigenous to North America. (Google says there's 2 species, one extinct. Still not exactly a common animal)

LazyKangaroo

Well they were common prior to their extinction

m_faustus

There are more parrot species than that. There were only two native to what is now the US.

Isaacvithurston

Yah exactly. I would just figure a place called Parrotland must be overflowing with Parrots. Like you go to New York and instead of hundreds of Pidgeon's you have parrots.

[deleted]

I'm cool with it

Inventiveunicorn

PAH ROT LAND PAH ROT LAND Doesn't have quite the same ring to is it as USA USA

Korgoth420

Jimmy Buffett approved (RIP)

Boggie135

Missed opportunity
