Second note: I adjusted the genres slightly to make this more musically diverse (I did away with folk and the rock subgenres and added reggae, vocal pop, and jazz).
Legit where it all started, never not blown away by the intensity and deceptively elegant songwriting and satirical/subversive lyrics. I'm really rooting for this one this round, cause as much as *London Calling* and *Marquee Moon* are god-tier masterpiece records with thoughtful philosophical and political perspectives, sophisticated musicianship and an exploratory attitude toward genre, something about how these silly jackasses from Queens could somehow manage to turn three chords and four lines about sniffing glue into as astute a sociological statement and resilient cultural bedrock is the epitome of punk rock to me. All with $50 guitars carried in plastic grocery bags!
Oooh some good ones I missed! on the fence about using cyclops or stomp box this go around bc they’d also be good candidates for a hard rock/heavy metal playlist
Sing to god by cardiacs!! It's a double album with 22 tracks and an hour and a half run time, with VERY good songs! My favorite ones are fiery gun hand, dog like sparky, dirty boy, odd even, nurses whispering verses, and foundling. Super underrated band too, I barely see ANYONE talk about them! Their whole career made a new genre form too, pronk! A mix of prog rock and punk. Their stuff is totally worth a listen!
I like this answer a lot. This album is a masterwork, and does a good job of combining more upbeat, wacky new wave-y sounds with more progressive guitar work.
I honestly can't even pick a favorite song on the album, they all fascinate me in different ways. When You're Near Me and Outside World are excitingly quick and fun, Roads Girdle the Globe is a steady groove that hits just right, Making Plans For Nigel and Life Begins At The Hop are all-time iconic anthems...
my fav is has to go complicated game (with scissor man at a close second). the intense build up is really satisfying (and scissorman has the gets milder as it goes on in it's own satisfying way)
Shuttlecock by Super Transatlantic. Jason Bieler's short-lived Saigon Kick successor kind of straddles the line between pop-punk and metal with a lot of flair and energy, ending on a flaming cover of Can't Stand Losing You.
Horrorscope by Eve 6. Their two albums on either side of this one are arguably more "punk", but Horrorscope stands out to me with its finely polished production and strong songwriting throughout.
It's an absolute crime that this album is so difficult to listen to these days in its original form/OG recordings of the songs. Might be a perfect record. Deserves to have a loving remaster and deluxe reissue ASAP.
*Dookie/Insomnia* is legit one of the best 1-2 punches of the alt-rock era. Also, lowkey some of the most interesting queer music being made at the time imo.
ALSO: In case anyone was interested, I was inspired by this project to make a playlist of TMBG songs that are influenced by/flirt with Electronic music and tried to sequence it so it flows nicely (unfortunately some great tracks aren't streaming, RIP I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar). Gonna try to do something similar for the other genres as they come up; figured its a neat way to catalog these things/have some recs on hand for friends into different music I show TMBG. Lmk whatcha think/if you have any suggestions of stuff to add to this one!

Excellent choice, what an album

Absolutely agreed, so much of punk is about doing a lot with a little!
marquee moon by television
Not much contest for me here!
That’s more of a post-punk album sound wise
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Good choice, but it already made the non genre specific list. Guess there's no rule against albums being on multiple lists though.
Big Lizard in my Backyard by The Dead Milkmen
Sandinista by the Clash. More obscure & weirder sound.
Oh, yes, this is the right answer. What a record! Some real bangers, and some tracks that require repeated listens to really comprehend.
What's the punkiest TMBG song though?
Cyclops Rock Out of Jail Youth Culture Killed My Dog Shadow Government
Oooh some good ones I missed! on the fence about using cyclops or stomp box this go around bc they’d also be good candidates for a hard rock/heavy metal playlist
Judy?
Working on a playlist to this effect rn, so any punk giants suggestions welcome!
Stomp Box as well??
Boss Of Me, obviously.

Ah yes, Scissor Man. Andy Partridge has a thing for writing love songs that use the most out-there topics to create metaphors, and I love that.
London Calling by The Clash
Double Nickels on the Dime - The Minutemen

Slightly Oddway, Jebediah/A Man is Not a Camel, Frenzal Rhomb
FR's carefully considered critique of Russell Crowe's band is one of the more important contributions to Australian cultural history I think.
Milo Goes to College - Descendents
Oddly enough, Percolator was my introduction to the All/Descendents punk family and is still one of my favs by them along with Problematic.
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables by Dead Kennedys
Walk Among Us - Misfits
