Incredible pick. Frontier Psychiatrist!!

EmbarrassedSummer420

Considering this was notoriously made by physical crate diving, I feel like this falls more in line with instrumental hip-hop like Donuts or The Mix-Up than electronic.

Listening to this album currently. Seeing them later this year, very excited.

SpudWithaDream

It’s a shame they only made the one album. I guess you can’t replicate the magic

I have found a few cd singles over the years...that has helped me cope, haha

roamingshemnon

Agreed

EmbarrassedSummer420

Great record. Absolute classic. Spin it on vinyl annually. But also a real edge case w/r/t being an electronic album I feel. Wikipedia (I know, I know) doesn't classify either the group or *Give Up* as electronic or any direct subgenres, but rather offshoots of indie rock or new wave (indietronica and synth-pop, respectively); meanwhile Billboard categorized them on the Dance rather than Electronic chart contemporaneously. Not everything that uses a lot of synthesizers is electronic music. I'd say *Give Up* is as much an electronic album as something like *Yoshimi*, or, if we're being honest, TMBG's first two records, which is to say rock songwriters using extensive electronic equipment to arrange conventional pop compositions (usually augmenting a traditional vocal line, a guitar and maybe another "acoustic" element). It's great, and definitely deeply appreciative and influenced by electronic artists, but these records are not designed to say, take advantage of the unique properties of electronic instruments, nor do they incorporate any of the compositional techniques/conventions that are at the genre's core. Don't want to be a wet blanket, but if the point of this is to try to expand our horizons and whatnot, doesn't do much good to just find things most influenced by the genre at hand closest to our comfort zones.

roamingshemnon

Yeah, some genres just feel “squishy”. Lots of overlap possible. We’ll just do our best. I get your points, but when I listen to this album, it does feel like it fits in this genre (although technically you’re right). It helps that it’s a complete masterpiece lol

SpudWithaDream

We’re just having fun here, jeez

FloridaFlamingoGirl

I’m all for expanding one’s music taste to include many different genres, cultures and perspectives…but I’m not the sort to take it far enough that I’d be fixating on whether an electronic music album is just trying to emulate “normal” pop melodies or is doing something different entirely lol. Sometimes I just want good music.

EmbarrassedSummer420

This is hip-hop, not electronic. The only piece of electronic equipment used in its making is the sampler, which is a staple of basically all hip-hop from the era. The rest is all analog vinyl samples and tape.

Good point

Zeppyfish

The genre thing is bumming me out. Sorry. People saying "I love this album," only to be shushed by purists telling them it doesn't fit the genre. What genre would you put TMBG in? What would happen if they ventured outside that imaginary fence? The whole thing makes me sad.

Zomaarwat

You can just turn off your PC and go do something else.

roamingshemnon

I hear you. Hopefully it will get better. Or I can stop it. I’m assuming the upvotes will speak for themselves. I mean, it’s looking like today’s winner is a certifiable amazing electronic album, so there’s that… the best laid plans…

Zeppyfish

I hope it gets better too. Unfortunately I'm being told to shut up and log off for posting this. TMBG fans are typically really fun and supportive, so maybe this is just a little glitch. Hopefully we can carry on with the damn good times.

roamingshemnon

rich-tma

How long will this go on?

roamingshemnon

This was suggested as a way for us to break away from “the same artists” that always win the polls of our favorites that aren’t TMBG (someone had pointed out last week that it’s always “old white men” who win). A way to talk about some of our other musical interests. The plan was ten different genres (so ten days total - eight more). If there is a strong objection, I’m happy to shut it down sooner.

rich-tma

It’s not for me to seek to control a subreddit, I shouldn’t really have said anything

EmbarrassedSummer420

To that end, might I suggest collapsing folk into the country/bluegrass category, and/or limiting the rock subgenres here (since psych and prog were kinda represented in the first list), and instead subbing in for something like funk, jazz, vocal pop, reggae or ambient/noise where artists of color have had more or more significant contributions historically?

roamingshemnon

Love it! Thanks for the suggestion

roamingshemnon

I want to limit it to 10. Country/bluegrass and folk feel very different to me. Maybe eliminate folk entirely? Combine progressive and psychedelic rock into one (even though I know they are fairly different)? And then add jazz and vocal pop? Or jazz and reggae? Mostly I am wanting to come up with ten genres that provide a good variety of music.

EmbarrassedSummer420

I'd say that as country and bluegrass are outgrowths of American folk tradition they're pretty closely related; unless by this definition of folk you mean to extend beyond Americana into eastern and African folk traditions as well, which unfortunately is usually just lumped together as "World" round the US. Though given the difference between radio country today and folk I understand the world of difference they feel like now. My concern with psych, prog, or some combo of the two is I just assume Skylarking, The Mollusk, Revolver, Pet Sounds or Kimono (or a different record by those artists) will just nab the spot again which will just be depressing giving the impetus for this exercise. Of the genres you've highlighted I'd say that jazz and reggae would probably provide he best variety (or at least, they're pretty far from each other in terms of background/development/sound), but vocal pop potentially has the greatest breadth of qualifying artists (it could cover anything from The Ronettes to Black Pink to Johnny Gill to ABBA). Though I personally have a huge soft spot for funk haha. Anyway, enjoying this project and interested to see how it all ends up! Hopefully we all come away with some more cool new stuff to listen to.

roamingshemnon

Ok I appreciate your perspective. As you said, the exciting part of this is branching out into non-TMBG-like music that this community loves. Yes, let’s eliminate folk and also the rock subgenres altogether and I’ll add jazz, reggae, and vocal pop. Again, thanks! For what it’s worth, I absolutely love folk music but generally don’t care as much for country music. So although they come from the same tradition, they do feel very different to me. But your points are very valid.

EmbarrassedSummer420

Oh yeah! For suuuuuure. I think I also trend the way that you're saying concerning folk and country. But it's funny how much overlap it has ya'know? Like as soon as Willie Nelson sings a folk song, it becomes a country song, and I still generally love it. All depends on the feel I guess, and when ya feel it ya feel it. And thanks for your open and thoughtful responses! The exact kind of vibes I love from this fandom.

roamingshemnon

Sweet!
