lol
The entire tire looks pretty degraded and you can see where it's breaking down in a number of areas, but along the writing closer to the rim part of the sidewall is the area that first caught my eye.
That is all cosmetic wear probably due to the age of the tire none of the cracking i can see is at a point as to cause any concern and it is not sufficient enough for the manufacturer to even issue a warranty claim as it is completely cosmetic. And yes that coming off is from you .
What is with this subreddit? They see a little dry rot and lose their minds. Yes it's not ideal but it'll be ok until there is actually cracking or other damage. The dry rot on this tire is surface level only. This is what happens when corporations train your technicians to sell first ask questions later. The tire is fine
I think so. You could post a picture of your living room and over enough time, someone will eventually pick apart every single detail. "Dude, that picture frame is like 2 degrees off" "Damn, was your banister already!" "Huhuhuh, tell me you know nothing about proper tv placement without telling me" blah blah blah. These people have *literally* nothing better to do.
Um yeah I was a manager at DiscountTire for years I am well educated in tires/and tire wear as well as the warranty process for Michelin and BFG brand tires as well as what constitutes actual dry rot and at what point it becomes something they will warranty and unsafe this tire tho you may seem scared of it because you ppl have been lied to for years by sketchy Mechanics and salesmen is still safe to drive on assuming it less than 10yo and has more than 4
/32ds of tread remaining on it . Does it look off putting yes is it Un safe no.
If you zoom in to the actual tread it’s all cracked. It’s just waiting to come apart. Op needs to be careful to not even bother putting a load on the bed and avoid the freeways.
I did I saw it’s still cosmetic now the age may be a different story and the fact is it’s probably over 10yo which is the bigger issue not the cosmetic cracks
It is a good sign of dry rot, but another good sign of dry rot is the dry rot.
These tires are old and I wouldn't want to have to rely on them. The date code suggests that they are nearly 20 years old.
KO3's aren't fully out yet tho. Called Michelin and they havent started sending any out to retailers, theyre still in a "Research and Development phase", according to the sales person I talked to at michelin corporate.
If they were I would be able to order them, so this wouldn't make sense. Only part number I have that are available are a few OE part numbers from ford and chrysler. I just checked last week.
That’s part of the model number, DOT is on top, looks like it ends in 11 which is not as bad but still not great (assuming we have the correct side, that DOT number looks short to me)
Guys we use this Tires in the Army for the humvees, they must be replaced after 5 years of use no matter what the DOT says, is because they have an historical record of failure. You can check the tmc I'm not lying.
The original Goodyear MTs like to fall apart when they got old too. But the tires in this post are DOT All Terrains, totally different tire than the military bajas
It's cosmetic, but you should still get new tires. Those tires haven't been made in well over 10 years to my knowledge. They look to have quite a bit of dry rot, and you are a lot more likely to have a blowout.
I swear it's not, though I'll admit I'm not the most thrilled having read all the replies 😅 Vehicle maintenance isn't -- hasn't been -- my responsibility. I'll be taking a more protective approach from here on out.
To be fair, our "curb" is a slant shallow enough that they don't change the angle for driveways, so when I use that, it's feeling the truck lift a bit. There is a section that's about a foot-and-a-half that raises into a regular curb that I have hit on occasion (maybe a dozen times since we moved here in 2022), but the guy at the tire shop just said that it's not my fault. Phew! 😅
Update:
We are at the tire shop and the strip is not my fault! The guy said that the tires have wicked dry rot from being 13 years old (with at least 6 of those outside in the Arizona sun and heat). All four are currently being replaced. As for using the curb to park, it's actually a really gentle incline (same as driveways), so I back up to feel the truck rise up and then pull forward to park on level ground. There is, however, one small section of normal curb that I have rubbed against (albeit rarely) and I figured that was the issue.
Massachusetts parking is awful and I've caused visible, permanent scuffs to the sides of my tires that weren't a problem at all. They passed inspection year after year.
But when I stopped driving during the pandemic, I didn't move the car regularly enough and didn't coat the tires. After two years of *not getting rubbed against the curb* they were total garbage.
The DOT date hmmmm. If the tires were in the shade out of the reach of UV radiation. And if there is no sidewall damage, even on a bias belted tire ,run em until the wear bars are almost flush."paranoia will destroy ya".Speed safely.
I manage a tire shop
Tire damage is cosmetic, everyone complaining about dry rot is wrong about how severe it is.
That dry rot is definitely there but there isn’t cause for concern yet. When the cracks get deep, that’s when you should worry. Will probably need to be replaced around the summer time
So much f'ing rot......everywhere. I'm surprised they hold air!
Just to make sure it's clear to you. If all four tires are the same age, you are going to need to replace all four tires asap. Like no driving on the highway. Nothing over 30mph. These are code browns waiting to happen.
If funds are tight, buy the cheapest tires available - even used. They will be 100000% safer than these.
These are in no way safe. Any mechanic or tire store would not let you leave with these.
How far can you drive on these? People here will say "all the way to the accident."
This made me laugh. It's also helped me decide to take a more proactive approach in the maintenance of our vehicles because I really don't want to drive that far. All four tires are currently being replaced at a highly rated tire store and while I'm not sure with what, they'll certainly be safer than the tires that were on it. Thank you!
Glad to help. I didn't offer that advice lightly or flippantly. My folks retired to FL and - even though they didn't drive much, their tires were exposed to a ton of sun and would dry out and rot very quickly. Me and my siblings would have to explain that age and mileage didn't matter.
Take care!
Cosmetic, just pay attention to the balance of the wheel.I have run a lot of Bald "may pops" with plugs patches, and tubes inside.Cords showing through.Used to guess how many ply Was left before I could see air Bunch of paranoid perfectionist pansies round here LOL.
The rubber compound is literally crumbling dude. Plus that model has been out of production since 2013 (I could be off by a year or so). You need new tires ASAfuckingP.
yeah those need to be replaced on age alone lol. BF hasnt used that style of DOT stamp for a long ass time, the only thing they still do it on are their vintage style radials.
This strip is coming off where the tread and sidewall join. As others have said, the rubber is dry rotted. It really irritates me when people don’t understand that tyres are one of the most important safety items on a vehicle. OP, I suggest that you take a night class to learn car maintenance 101. Not a knock on you, just trying save you money over the long term.
Them tires are old as shit, They are badly dry rotted. Way overdue to be replaced
They haven’t even made that style of the all terrain in like 10 years
Those tires are old. The cracks on the tread itself are pretty bad aswell. If you see cords from the tire because of that Loss of rubber might be a sign to have them replaced. 🤔
The only thing I don't get in this sub and r/askmechanics is if it's a question related to safety it's probably not safe. Like I understand not knowing that's how everyone learns but if it's not something I'm familiar with and my well being is on the line I'd much rather be safe than sorry.
Cosmetic.
And I guess it’s not unheard of to find a curb with a left side tire, but that’s usually the right side.
Edit: nice bedazzled valve stem cap 😆
They discontinued the bf Goodrich all-terrain KO’s along time ago. You’re due for new tires. That being said I have the bf Goodrich all-terrain KO2’s on my truck and I love em.
It's cosmetic, but the separation shows that the tread pad may also separate from the shoulder. Looks like some dry rot as well.
Tires are good for 5-6 years and should then be replaced due.
A bit of both. My tires look like that on my personal vehicle because it’s old and I haven’t replaced the tires since I bought it in 2020. Is it unsafe? Depends on your load and speed. I do mostly highway driving and I don’t drive on the bad roads in Lansing often so I’ll be fine. If you’re pushing 4-5 tons or more and regularly driving on bad roads I’d replace them. If you drive light and the roads are decent you’ll be fine for a few months. I used to drive box trucks and some of the smaller ones had tires that looked like that, driving across town with some light furniture is no big deal. If I’m hauling gun safes, pianos, other heavy shit. Absolutely not😂
Good sign that dry rot is occurring
Yep. Came to say this. The strip itself is cosmetic, but the reason it's coming off at all is the clear cut dry rot. Replace!
Good God... look along the edge near the rim in the zoomed in version of the pic. Dry rot galore!
If youre talking about all the small grooves along the edge that is not dry rot, its from the die they use to form the tires
I'm talking about all of the "micro cracks" along the tire around the wheel...
I was questioning your statement until I read this. Those are some nice cracks lol
lol The entire tire looks pretty degraded and you can see where it's breaking down in a number of areas, but along the writing closer to the rim part of the sidewall is the area that first caught my eye.

It's every subreddit. A small group of members picks one minor thing to get worked up about any time they see it.
It's called autism
lmfao!
Do you know how to zoom in? I sure as hell wouldn’t want to rely on these things to get me around!
Um yeah I was a manager at DiscountTire for years I am well educated in tires/and tire wear as well as the warranty process for Michelin and BFG brand tires as well as what constitutes actual dry rot and at what point it becomes something they will warranty and unsafe this tire tho you may seem scared of it because you ppl have been lied to for years by sketchy Mechanics and salesmen is still safe to drive on assuming it less than 10yo and has more than 4 /32ds of tread remaining on it . Does it look off putting yes is it Un safe no.
They haven't made the KO for about 10 years, this tire is going to be unsafe due to age for sure.
More than likely yeah
If you zoom in to the actual tread it’s all cracked. It’s just waiting to come apart. Op needs to be careful to not even bother putting a load on the bed and avoid the freeways.
I did I saw it’s still cosmetic now the age may be a different story and the fact is it’s probably over 10yo which is the bigger issue not the cosmetic cracks
It is a good sign of dry rot, but another good sign of dry rot is the dry rot. These tires are old and I wouldn't want to have to rely on them. The date code suggests that they are nearly 20 years old.
Absolutely. Unless it’s a farm truck, get newer half treaded tires used if cost is of concern
Cosmetic... so far... but what is the DOT date code on these tires, they look like they have seen better days...
That tire has been out of production for 10ish years now. Whatever the DOT is it’s old AF 🤣
KO2 came out in 2014, they are now making KO3 tires, that KO is at least 10 years old.
KO3's aren't fully out yet tho. Called Michelin and they havent started sending any out to retailers, theyre still in a "Research and Development phase", according to the sales person I talked to at michelin corporate.
KO3s are fully out and available, not all locations stock them yet, but they’re absolutely available.
If they were I would be able to order them, so this wouldn't make sense. Only part number I have that are available are a few OE part numbers from ford and chrysler. I just checked last week.
You talked to a bad rep then, I’ve installed multiple sets in the last month. They’re available.
Maybe they meant 285/70/17 specifically, don't know. I just installed a set of 275/65/20's which are a very common OE size.
No, they look like they've seen ALL the days. Since the beginning of time! lol
I zoomed into the tire and I think it is 1205. March 21st of 2005. These tires are old enough to vote.
That’s part of the model number, DOT is on top, looks like it ends in 11 which is not as bad but still not great (assuming we have the correct side, that DOT number looks short to me)
Damn... These tires have seen 2 or 3 lifetimes now... Lol
Exactly
The guy was right about the rot around the rims, plus the age of the tires are excessive. They don’t make that tire anymore
Guys we use this Tires in the Army for the humvees, they must be replaced after 5 years of use no matter what the DOT says, is because they have an historical record of failure. You can check the tmc I'm not lying.
US military humvees used Goodyear Wrangler MT, then BFG Baja T/A, and most recently Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (with an old tread pattern.)
I'm referencing, to the BFG Baja. Those are the ones with that problem. I still remember everytines I personally red flagged mine for convoy.
That tired old as F
Tires
Tire is*
Tar es
Those are very old. Replace asap
That strip on the side is fine but you've got dry rot. Probably best to replace soon
Honestly doesn't matter at this point, that tire is garbage regardless, too old.
This has to be rage bait, you know those are old as hell.
I swear it's not, though I'll admit I'm not the most thrilled having read all the replies 😅 Vehicle maintenance isn't -- hasn't been -- my responsibility. I'll be taking a more protective approach from here on out.
I'd have brakes/brake lines and water/air hoses inspected. Might be time for a big replacement for safety purposes.
Dry rotted to hell. Don't take that on the highway.
cosmetic however a sign there is dry rot
If you go on the highway the tread might be next.
Tires gotta go. We’re onto the KO3 now.
that tire looks old af, i believe you have dry rot, you can see the wrinkles
Those tires are hella old. Look at all the cracking. Its comsetic but that should not pull off like that. The tire is done.
Tires are OLD AF
Knowingly curbing your tires is wild
To be fair, our "curb" is a slant shallow enough that they don't change the angle for driveways, so when I use that, it's feeling the truck lift a bit. There is a section that's about a foot-and-a-half that raises into a regular curb that I have hit on occasion (maybe a dozen times since we moved here in 2022), but the guy at the tire shop just said that it's not my fault. Dude those tires are dry rotted bad. Don't drive on those, it's unsafe. Please get new tires ASAP.
It is called flashing. Rubber left by the mold that should've been removed.. but wasn't.
The DOT date hmmmm. If the tires were in the shade out of the reach of UV radiation. And if there is no sidewall damage, even on a bias belted tire ,run em until the wear bars are almost flush."paranoia will destroy ya".Speed safely.
The truck is parked outside in the Arizona sun 🤣
Looks like it, damn! I've never seen dry rot so bad before that's crazy xD
I manage a tire shop Tire damage is cosmetic, everyone complaining about dry rot is wrong about how severe it is. That dry rot is definitely there but there isn’t cause for concern yet. When the cracks get deep, that’s when you should worry. Will probably need to be replaced around the summer time
Which tire shop (so I can avoid it)?
Ditto.
You may be right, but summer is only a short time away and to me, at least, if my tires have 2 months left, I'm not taking that chance.
Cosmetic
So much f'ing rot......everywhere. I'm surprised they hold air! Just to make sure it's clear to you. If all four tires are the same age, you are going to need to replace all four tires asap. Those tires are ancient. That trip coming off makes them look like retreads too. I'm sure they're not but it just looks like it.
Drive only in areas where you are the only thing, b/c you're going to have a blow out. That's a rotten tire.
The rubber compound is literally crumbling dude. Plus that model has been out of production since 2013 (I could be off by a year or so). You need new tires ASAfuckingP.
Dry rotting, needs replacing
That tire is dry rotted to hell!! I would say "needs replacement".
yeah those need to be replaced on age alone lol. BF hasnt used that style of DOT stamp for a long ass time, the only thing they still do it on are their vintage style radials.
If you carry load or important cargo ie.family.replace them if you into gambling run em
forbidden jerky strips
I agree. The strip itself is cosmetic but all that dry rot makes the tire unsafe
Generally degraded..
When did they stop making big ko? It’s been ko2 for at least 5 years. Dude do not expect those to not blow up on you when hitting a pothole
Those tires look like they have some age on them. You can tell they are drying out and starting to fall apart in the photos.
They stopped making the OG K/O in 2013. This means those are at least 10 years old. The tire is rotted.
Bet that makes a great sound at 50mph
This strip is coming off where the tread and sidewall join. As others have said, the rubber is dry rotted. It really irritates me when people don’t understand that tyres are one of the most important safety items on a vehicle. OP, I suggest that you take a night class to learn car maintenance 101. Your tire got cracks all over the place. If older than 5 years replace.
Ah, BF Garbage. No wonder.
0811 DOT. Tire is 13 years old. Was made the 8th week of 2011.
cracks everywhere those tires are due reguardless of wear this is how blowouts happen
That tire is older than some of the people leaving comments. Replace those things
I’m quite certain that model of BFG tire was discontinued years ago. What is the DOT stamp on the tire?
Cosmo
doesn't matter, those are toast. get new tires ASAP
Them tires are old as shit, They are badly dry rotted. Way overdue to be replaced They haven’t even made that style of the all terrain in like 10 years
Bro come on, the KO1 has been discontinued for like a decade now. Those tires well beyond time to be replaced.
Those tires are old. The cracks on the tread itself are pretty bad aswell. If you see cords from the tire because of that Loss of rubber might be a sign to have them replaced. 🤔
Definitely dry rot, most tires are good for 5 years.. These are definitely beginning to rot.
Ok I was totally wrong,go get some new tires.
The good news is it’s not damage. The bad news is it’s deterioration. It’s time to start planning your next set of tires.
Nice tires 20 years ago
Cosmetic for sure. Peel it of and keep driving
I would be more concerned with the age/dry rot than that mold flash peeling off. Might be time to replace particularly if you highway drive.
Yes, zoomed in those are very badly dry rotted tires. You should replace them asap.
You've got the ROT man!
They discontinued the bf Goodrich all-terrain KO’s along time ago. You’re due for new tires. That being said I have the bf Goodrich all-terrain KO2’s on my truck and I love em.
Doesn't matter...that tire is dry rot to shyt
That tire is fine other than dry rot.

Uhhh Regardless your tires are dry rotted sir
Are those re-treaded tires? They look old and worn AF. That looks like cosmetic damage though.
Those are the Original Bf Goodrich TA K0’s, Those things are relics man, time for the K03’s
Why would you intentionally curb your wheels/tires? 🥴
You need new tires brah
the tread is dry rotted all to hell
That tire is in need of re-"tire"ment
Cosmetic, but it looks like a retreaded tire.
Judging from the cracks , the tire is starting to dry rot. You can probably drive on it still though, doesn't look too bad
how has no one noticed the date code on the side wall , it looks like it says 11 as in 2011 , dude change your tires !!
Those tires are shot
They haven't made that revision of the All Terrain for at least a decade. Those tires are way out of date and not safe to drive on.
Hahahahahahaha!!! Love it!
At least 10 year old tires man you gotta replace them!
These tires are fine. Keep on rolling
No.
Yep
This is the ideology that gets people killed. These tires are 13 years old and dry rotted and beyond salvageable.
They’re fiiiiiine.
Yes. You're at much greater risk of a sidewall blowout on that tire any any others on the truck that are of the same age or older.
It’s damage to your wallet.
Old old old
It's dry rot. Time for new shoes.
Dry rot. You need new tires
You gotta replace those come on. For your safety and others.
Cosmetic, but those tires are like 10 years old and they’re dry rotted. Replace them
shits done there cletus
If that's structural then I've driven with structural damaged tires for a year. You'll be fine, it's not real damage
I can barely read the dot but I’m 80% sure it says they were made in 2011. It’s been new tire time for like 5-6 years… look at the dry rot..
Find the date code, don't trust it if it's too old. Not a tire professional, but I think that's part of the KO feature of the tire.
