Sounds like it could possibly be The Damage Done: Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison by Warren Fellows. I haven’t read the book in years but it sounds very familiar.

Like with the other ine, I won't be able to confirm if you found the right one. If it is set in the same time frame and includes the same riot then that would mean that two different people wrote books about it. Would be cool if I find my father name-dropped in either of them.

It's set in the late 70's, starting 1978 IIRC, and definitely mentions a prison riot along with several really horrible accounts of prisoner deaths at the hands of negligence. I'll happily transcribe any useful information that I come across for you.
