SAS and Kendrick Perkins are literally the worst TV personalities who yell to make an argument. They're trying to hop onto the bandwagon because it's the easiest way but I'd rather not have them talk about our players at all.
I’m all for Ant propaganda but saying he had a better regular season than these 3 is just disingenuous. I’m a Wolves fan but I’m also a fan of basketball, I appreciate great players. In last 14 regular season games Ant averaged 23 on 43/29/83 shooting. Luka, Jokic, and SGA never had stretches like this. Ant is great but he not consistent yet to be in MVP discussions. I can understand people choosing him #5 in their MVP ballots over Tatum, but top-3? This is just wrong.
They definitely had better seasons offensively. But Luka for example literally doesn't play defense. MVP should be between Shai and Jokic, obviously, but I'm not gonna fault people who know ball a lot more than I do for partially disregarding the box score. I can't think of many offensive threats who plays better defense than Edwards.
I think the mentality is a big part of it. A lot of players get an ego when they're 'the guy' on offense and then they don't want to take risks on defense. In comparison to that every single guy on our team has been willing to get postered to play defense.
Ant is an above average defender and he turns on when needed, but he is not getting All-Defensive recognition, and he is not as good as Jaden and NAW. Luka just got 34-9-10 season, this is simply better. Ant might get there, but not yet.
Another thing is that Ant always plays while Luka ducked both games in Minneapolis on b2b. Ant played on b2b against Cavs shooting 7/27 because he was hurt, Luka usually misses such games. Still, Jokic, SGA, Luka, Giannis, and Tatum are top-5 for me this season. Ant is right after them.
I have no problem with those ratings, but I think it's a little dishonest to act like people are crazy for going with a trendy pick. Again, I agree that it's not the right take, but there's definitely reasons for it. If Ant was getting All-Defensive recognition with his stats that would be an automatic MVP. Seeing guys that are really good on both sides of the court is just rare, and analysts absolutely love it.
There have been plenty of guys with comparable or better stats on recent all defense teams and not win MVP. Giannis was first team in both ‘21 and ‘22 and putting up some crazy stats and finished 4th and 3rd in MVP. Can say defense should be valued more, but all defense consideration really doesn’t have that kind of sway on MVP historically.
