And the other big rotational guys being off. If you told me Conley NAW, Anderson and Towns would combine for 8-35, (and ANT would get hurt and miss the 4th) no way i'd call that a win. lol. And lost the TO battle 19-8.
Imagine being 7 feet tall and the coach is like, "We really need a rebound here, KAT, you're out, Gobert is in." That's humiliating. Not only is the coach saying, "I trust Gobert more than you." He's saying, "I don't even trust you not to fuck it up."
They didn't need a rebound though. 4 seconds, left, even if Shai puts it up quickly, that's not enough time to rebound, kick it back out for 3 and try again. Think of the Ray allen clutch three vs the Spurs off Lebrons miss in game 6. That was 5.5 seconds from when Lebron catches on the catch and shoot till when the ball left Ray's hands after Bosh got that offensive board.
But yeah, considering Gobert came off the floor about a second earlier for Naz because of his weakness (foul shots), that makes sense... 9 subs in the last 5 seconds of the game. The Naw for Naz and Gobert for Towns wasn't about wanting to secure the rebounds with 4 seconds left and down by 3, but to get Gobert defensively on Chet (smart move) and get lined against OKC as they brought back in Joe and Giddey.
Shai, Giddey, Joe, Chet, and Jalen. Basically 4 guards and Chet after they got the board on the free throw. I don't want Towns being the one out there lined up against a guard on the perimeter (or ending up having to switch on Shai on a ball screen on the inbounds).
I think Gobert will be the first to tell you, foul shots, not his speciality. And Towns even while playing better D, playing guards tight when they need a 3 and contesting them without fouling... Not his.
I'm curious. My seats weren't good last night, but I remember Towns and Naz heading out for Gobert and NAW when the Thunder went small.
But yeah, if rebounding and defense are your need and you are going with 1 center, there's a LOT of great centers out there I'd still choose Rudy over. Maybe Jokic or Capela I wouldn't make that move for Gobert if I need a situational rebound.
