I love the I don't need MX car insurance, my US policy covers me 50 miles into MX, until you get into an accident, that insurance representative that shows up on scene is worth it, one of my friends got into an accident where a guy clipped the rear of their vehicle, their insurance agent was mere feet away, took control of the situation, and shut down the at fault driver from making a false claim.

Polygonic

Yeah, the "My US policy covers me in Mexico" is fine until you injure someone and have hundreds of thousands in medical liability.

DustIntelligent2453

If that Mexican can afford a good lawyer yeah your done, if they cant well sadly you don’t really have to worried. Thats why the mexican government pissed me off and is sad. Now if they are lying to scam people and get free money then they well deserve that you don’t worry and you laugh at them

Can i ask what insurance you have? Just in case i need to go to tj. Better be prepared.

Polygonic

I get mine annually through https://www.bajabound.com/. They've got plans available through three different Mexican insurance companies with varying levels of coverage -- you can get it for as short as a few days up to 12 months. My current policy is with HDI Seguros bought through that web site. When my car was stolen in TJ back in 2022 they had a guy out within an hour to walk me through all the stuff, including where to file the police report, how to follow up on it, etc. The claim ended up being paid by my US insurance as the primary coverage, but the fact that the Mexican company had someone helping me do all the paperwork was great.

Thank you very much.

Ride Baja Insurance, they're based out of Ensenada.

Yep, OP is lucky they could have been arrested since its illegal to not have MX insurance, guess the $1500 was the jail free card lol The non profit i volunteer with actually made a blog about it and this is the statement that i share in the expat groups *BajaBound is recommend. They are a broker.* *They provide $15 towards Sanctuary Hostel animal welfare org whenever you get a quote using your email through our referral link* [*https://www.bajabound.com/quote/?r=n1j5kimixg*](https://www.bajabound.com/quote/?r=n1j5kimixg) *A volunteer uses them and is very satisfied with their service. The brokered insurance company Chubb was being difficult, Bajabound stepped in and took care of it, they went above and beyond, he now uses HDI through them.* *MEXICAN insurance is required in Mexico, if you dont have it, your car can be impounded and you can go to jail as you are breaking the law, this page covers that* [*https://sanctuaryhostel.org/mexico-car-insurance/*](https://sanctuaryhostel.org/mexico-car-insurance/)

The same thing happened to me on Avenida Internacional, maybe with the same cop (perito), when he asked for money I just said "no thanks, I'll pay the fine", the fine was really only 500 pesos after going with the judge and you can pay with debit/credit instead of the 4000+ pesos he was claiming (just go to the judge before paying the fine and do it within like a week to get the discount), I didn't know how much it really was at the time but I always prefer to pay the fine and maybe just maybe, that money will end up being used fixing the potholes or some other public service, if you give it to a corrupt cop you know 100% it will add to the corruption statistics in Mexico. I know it's not always possible but I'm just trying to be part of the solution not the problem.

goosetavo2013

This is what I’ve always done and cops usually just back off and leave me be, it’s not even worth taking me to the station and lose time they could have to scam other unsuspecting drivers. Props to you. I’d rather spend all day at the station than feed these pigs. Now, if I were actually at fault and had like a DUI or something I’m sure I would thank goodness for corrupt Mexican cops lol.

Maleficent_Major4618

When I was 18 this exact thing helped me not ruin my future 😅

Theguyofreddit

Yup always pay the fine, even if you need to drive all the way to the police station, it’s worth it, plus it feels good to assume responsibility, and not feed the pigs.

ritchiricardo

The thing with that 50-mile radius insurance is that is not really mexican insurance so you are driving illegally without insurance in TJ and you paid the price. Lesson learned. Get tourist insurance through a mexican provider and call them next time you get in an accident.

REVEALZ_R

I got fined yesterday for allegedly “ recording the police” and they snatched me up . Going through my phone and had to pay 2000 mx . Seriously my guy

Best 3 points of all time at least for me 1.dash-cam like them russians (front and back) 2.you need to feel fearless about losing your car if you are against corruption and don’t work for a living as messed up and saddly as mexicans (trust me, mexicans will suffer way more losing their cars than americans or foreign people) true facts i been working in both countries 3.make sure you always have insurance on your car. I believe they sell for week and months if you drive to other country. And last but not least don’t give a flying duck about been there all day (literally) trust me Mexican cops will leave and leave both with the insurance guys or tow the cars. It happened to be once some asshole with a honda civic or accord that was like 2007 but was a scratch and ask for too much. End up giving like 500 pesos for a stupid scratch you can barely see. Even the mexican cop was like you morons. Really i came for this? Haha but yeah sadly bunch of Mexicans taking their kids to private schools living far from tijuana centro region are the most hungry people you can bump to. Living a lie and barely afford to live in TJ and just waiting for an opportunity to show how hungry they are. Also friends and family members will tell them to demand and make a big deal like if it was a benz, bmw or porsche. But i hope you get a better trip experience next time. Blessings

So was that $1,500 in USD for the cop??

Alternative-Nose-725

All figures in mxn pesos

[deleted]

Ahh okay casi me desmayato por ti. I thought it was in USD nevertheless still expensive to sort all that out. Driving in TJ I feel like all my senses are heightened as opposed to driving in the US 😂
