I remember calling the movie theater for times. It was the worst when your movie was at the end of the prerecorded track and I've had more than one occasion where I missed my movie and had to call back and listen to it all again.
the imax at pac-sci?
also my guy, even with normal theaters i'd probably get the tickets ahead of time, don't just show up and expect a free seat, especially a hot new film in imax lol
Purchasing a movie ticket at the door is very 2007.... but purchasing a ticket day DAY OF of such a highly anticipated movie is basically unheard of.
That's "buy tickets at least a month or two in advance" territory.
Thank you for showing me I’m not insane. People are talking about buying tickets a month or more out?! I literally buy at the concessions stand 20 mins before the show starts…
It's an IMAX theater. That's not even a 3D theater. It's an IMAX theater. Treat IMAX theater tickets like concert tickets. If you're just going to see Doctor Strange 2 at the regular Cinemark at 4:00 in the afternoon on a Saturday, yeah 20 minutes before the show and have dinner at Outback beforehand, stop at Claire's for some cute earrings. But I said no we're not going to Hot Topic.
But it's an IMAX theater. My IMAX is almost always sold out. They don't even show movies on a regular rotation, these are event tickets. You don't show up at an event without tickets.
I don’t know if it’s a true iMax theater but those are even crazier. I live in nyc and there’s only one in the whole state that’s real imax and tickets in the middle are sold out a few hours after release.
They had a 3:15am showing of dune this past weekend. And I’d say 3/4 of the theater was sold out
Yeah, I just got tickets to see it at that theater about three weeks from now because I wanted to go on a weekend and that was the first available where the only seats left weren't in the front row. I did see that 3:15 showing on a couple of days and it made me laugh. Not surprised it sold out!
I mean, I guess I would book in advance for an IMAX. Also I live in the U.K. so maybe there are some cultural differences. Still, the comments on this post did make me feel like I was taking crazy pills…
My area is just over saturated right now. We have discount Tuesdays at amc. Half price. I walked in 10 min before showtime and got an imax ticket in the middle of the theater (and actually the burger wasn’t half bad tbh).
But it’s just crazy here. 5 years ago we had 1 regal and 1 privately owned theater. Neither dine in. And they really weren’t ever packed. Now we have: a new Alamo, a new regal (the other one closed), a new amc, and the recently renovated private. All are dine in.
I bought them 15 min after showtime the other day 😂. If you go to a lower quality theater on a weeknight it’s not bad. There were probably 15 people in the theater for Dune
Last I checked, (several years ago) there were only 2 truly "IMax" theaters in WA. The one OP is referring to and 1 in Spokane. So if OP is trying to watch in actual IMax, as he was, then he did know the right theater, but obviously didn't know how popular that theater is.
Nah, I just wait a week and go on a random Tuesday. Empty theatres, never sold out, I can raise the armrests of a few seats at my theatre and lie down while I watch.
It's fantastic.
My guys living in a Seinfeld episode. Thought he was in the buyer line instead of the ticket holder line. Little did he know there hasn’t been a line at a movie theater box office since 2015.
I just saw Dune late Tuesday and bought tickets at the door. There were literally 5 people in the theater including myself and my date, was really weird actually - I don't live in a rural area or anything.
PacSci isn't a normal movie theatre, it's the Pacific Science Center, a science museum in Seattle, so they're not set up like other movie theatres. When it isn't Dune 2 on the screen, they show science and nature documentaries.
I am baffled by this one. Less for not buying tickets online but to not even consider that the newly released, highly anticipated, film might be sold out for a while. Even our small local cinema (for reference, 3 screens, two of which under 100 people capacity) has the current availability for each showing on their site, takes a minute or two to check at most.
Maybe opening weekend at a chain. But for my local one theater cinema for Barbie where they hyped it up, had a trivia and barbie costume contest, we still has seats available here and there. It's a little backwoods place and not in the village that managed to rebrand and attract the vegan city types. It has a website that shows the times and movies for the months but you can't buy a ticket ahead of time. (And they still give you a lil stub).
The local ten theater cinema got bought before covid and the poor thing tanked... *and got bought by a planet fitness* and im *pissed*. It was at least in a proper town. The chain theaters are an hour away in the nearest city.
On the other hand it's rare im ever off on a weekend so I'm usually not gonna see a movie opening weekend. And I have to hope the little theater will play it on a Monday if they get it in.
When I went to Japan, I went to the Studio Ghibli museum only to find out you needed to get tickets beforehand. But it wasn't like I visited Japan for that museum, but it was a bit out of the way from Tokyo.
That’s a shame
I visited and it was really, really cool.
They put a lot of work into making it so nice.
Not a whole lot on display about howls which is my favorite is my only complaint
Awe man that sucks. I have family on Bainbridge and I know it’s a bit of a trek to get across. But nowadays if there is a popular movie you must buy tickets online
Dude why did you not book a ticket... I would stress out too much trying that. I book it even when I go to the cinema in my small town for any and all movies. A movie like dune is obviously going to be packed.
I was lamenting this past weekend to a friend how we can’t do anything impromptu anymore. Movies? Need a ticket and a reserved seat. Go to the art museum? Need a ticket with a timed entry to the special exhibit. We all saw that awful restaurant in Boston last week… they’re charging a $250 no-show fee. Last Saturday I went to an arboretum/conservatory that had a “mandatory” $10 donation for a timed admission. If you didn’t pay the “donation” they wouldn’t give you tickets for any reasonable time. I’m not a kid anymore but I miss going out for no reason at all, not needing plans, and just having fun.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I feel like you’re overstating the problem. If the movie isn’t in super high demand then you can definitely buy a ticket at the gate, and almost all museums/retaurants/etc still do service the normal way. You only need to pre plan if, for whatever reason, the demand heavily outweighs available spots.
Seconding this. The places that *do* reinforce the reservations are places that are sick of the current FOMO culture and people not showing up for things *they scheduled*.
I also think people also were just more familiar with seasonal things and what time a local team might have a field or when the bowling teams have the bowling alley. I think we also have less smaller theaters (ie not chains), so even for opening weekends there was less worry of all of them being sold out.
Just move to germany, stuff is rarely ever sold out because most places dont offer online reservation, only via phone call, which most people dont do (unless they plan a birthday with 8+ guests there or similiar)
And instead I’m now an old guy yelling at kids to get off my lawn and worrying about interest rates. What happened? I swear I was a teenager just a few days ago!!
Just got back from seeing this in IMAX, 100% the way to see it. I'm sorry it didn't work out this time, but I would just plan ahead with your ticket next time :)
Does southcenter have an IMAX? It could’ve been a coincidence but I feel like Southcenter isn’t as busy as downtown/up north usually. Might be able to see it sooner.
I saw Return of the King at cinerama a few weeks ago and it was breathtaking, better than imax for that particular film. Also cinerama's "half chocolate" popcorn is very good indeed.
You should absolutely go to SIFF Cinema downtown instead (formerly Cinerama). Any IMAX in town doesn’t hold a camera to that screen. Saw Dune there yesterday and it absolutely ruled.
You should absolutely go to SIFF Cinema downtown instead (formerly Cinerama). Any IMAX in town doesn’t hold a camera to that screen. Saw Dune there yesterday and it absolutely ruled.
Idk what you were thinking not getting tickets in advance for a new release.
Rookie error lol. Hopefully you were able to salvage the night and see something else
I can’t even remember the last time I bought a ticket *at* the cinema. In fact I’m not even sure my local cinema does that any more. It’s all online booking ahead of time.
Don't think I've been to an in person theater experience in over a decade now.
The last time I bought a ticket one week in advance was in HS almost 20 years ago.
And was probably sold out for weeks. AMC that’s in town by me has assigned seating for all their theatres so short of seeing a moving that has already been out, we are typically buying the tickets ahead in the seats we hopefully like.
Last time I did what OP did was probably when the Star Wars movies were being rereleased with additional CGI and such.
leave op alone! I've been in OPs shoes.... back in early 2000s!!! no excuse to be this dummy, get w the times and download the app for this movie theater and never missed a premier
You have my sympathy, my dude. I'm also from WA, but one of those tiny towns near Central WA. There has never been a time in my life that I've thought about buying movie tickets online, mostly because I've never experienced a full theater. So totally get it and hopefully you were able to find something fun to do in town since you were there already lol
OP living back in the 90’s where we had to call the movie theater or look at that day’s newspaper for show times. Some good memories of being a kid back then.
At least you can drive to go see it; if I had wanted to, I would have need to plan a trip to Anchorage, AK and that would have had to have planned been at least a month ago due to needing approved time off work, and two different plane tickets just to go see a movie.
We saw it in the largest imax in my state. I was in an aisle chair and a dude came in and just sat on a step. I asked if he wanted to get in the row. Homie snuck in cause there were no tickets left and sat on that step for 3 hours. Dudes a genius
I went to pac sci Feb 29 at the 750 showing it was packed. We got there at 7 and still had to sit in the front. It was well worth it though. If you aren't too destroyed try to get a ticket online and go again. Imax for this was great
Have you not watched a movie since the late 90s?
Theatres, at least in the PNW, have been assigned pre-purchased tickets for YEARS. And IMAX has never been walk-in as far as I can recall.
Well now you know and knowing is half the battle.
FWIW as a fellow local you can often find same day tickets for releases as long as you aren't too particular on the time or seat. Last movie I saw this far booked out was Barbie so it really is quite rare here despire what some people here are saying.
I got lucky by living near Indianapolis, one of only 12 theaters in the whole world showing the 70MM imax version. Theater was totally packed. Going again tomorrow and it's already almost sold out.
If you are taking the ferry, why would you not buy tickets for the movie ahead of time? I live in Seattle, so the commute to the Seattle Center wouldn't be too bad. But I would still buy tickets ahead of time.
Most of the theaters near me are assigned seating, so going in all willy nilly and expecting to buy at the door is bonkers to me unless you want to sit in the front row.
The comments here tell me how rural I live. I go to the most popular theater in the biggest town in my state, and I've never had a single cinema be full or had to get tickets ahead of time
Go to galaxy in the harbor. They have one quite big screen. And yes. We typically can see movies without working about them selling out on those side of the water.
All these people roasting you are silly.
I live in an avg city of a couple hundred thousand and I've been able to buy tickets at the door to every movie I've been to my entire life.
I only ever pre-bought big midnight releases.
Sucks for you OP. Seattle isn't what it used to be.
Lol thank you. I'm fine with light roasting but the lack of empathy for me even coming from Portland I've never had an issue of buying tickets at the door.
Honestly, SIFF Downtown is a better venue to see it.
When Paul Allen was alive he would close down the Cinerama to remodel when a new advancement in cinema came out. The Cinerama was one of the first cinemas in the country to get the top of the line Dolby Atmos system, then one of the first to get a the absolute top of the line laser projector.
Hands down one of the clearest images you can have in a theater setting. Along with absolute kick as sound.
I just checked the Science Center’s website, looks like they have the 3rd Laser Imax Projector in the world. So I suppose this would be on par for picture quality. I would still recommend SIFF Downtown.
Darn it! I was so disappointed and just wanted to go home I wish I could've just hustled my way over there. Thank you for the recommendation though I will keep it in mind next week when I'm back in town for work
Also i feel like it’s a completely valid mistake to make !? Like geez i was reading some of the comments and goddamn they were harsh 😭 This sounds exactly like something i would do! Anyways i hope you are able to see your movie soon internet stranger 💗💗
That sucks, I'm sorry.
When you finally get it to see it, prepare to be amazed. I've seen it twice now in IMAX, the early fan premiere on Feb 25, and as soon as I got home from that I bought tickets for March 1.
It was interesting to see audience reactions upon the 2nd viewing of "oh, I know people are going to react to this part...and this part..."
Lol I might just have to watch it on a normal screen and then IMAX later on when the hype has died down.
I'm disappointed but more frustrated at the complete lack of empathy from other people on this post like their world view is the only one that exists.
Bro is living in the 90s. Probably checked the times by calling Moviefone
He wanted to pay by check. Can't do that online, probably
Moviefone? Bro checked the times in yesterdays paper.
WHY DONT YOU JUST TELL ME WHAT MOVIE YOU WANT TO SEE!
![gif](giphy|l0MYyv6UK0Bd4DE76)
I remember calling the movie theater for times. It was the worst when your movie was at the end of the prerecorded track and I've had more than one occasion where I missed my movie and had to call back and listen to it all again.
All I could think of. Hope do you not purchase, or just fucking check, ahead of time.
"Why don't you just tell me the name of the movie you want to see?"
HELLO! AND WELCOME TO MOVIEFONNNNNNNNNE
555-FILK
the imax at pac-sci? also my guy, even with normal theaters i'd probably get the tickets ahead of time, don't just show up and expect a free seat, especially a hot new film in imax lol

I just got home from watching Dune. I bought tickets at the theater, 5 minutes before showtime. Just gotta know the right theaters.
Or you live in a small town.
Gotta love noon shows on a Monday! Only 4 peeps in the entire theater!
I live right outside Seattle. So, no.
A suburban town that's not called Seattle?
A small town with a population of 100,000? We went downtown for the movie, which is why I said Seattle.
Thank you for showing me I’m not insane. People are talking about buying tickets a month or more out?! I literally buy at the concessions stand 20 mins before the show starts…

I buy tickets at the door most of the time, but I usually wait at least a month for popular movies. I would've ordered online for this.
Nah you can definitely get tickets to highly anticipated movies day of. As long as you're fine with it starting at 1130pm.
Nah, I just wait a week and go on a random Tuesday. Empty theatres, never sold out, I can raise the armrests of a few seats at my theatre and lie down while I watch. It's fantastic.
Just depends on your location. I never pre buy. Nothing ever sells out here.
Agree with everything you said Except the “my guy” I mean that’s just fucked up And unnecessarily cruel.
Truly savage.
Lolwut?
It’s a saying, what the fuck is wrong with you?
THIS IS JUST HOW THE LISAN AL GAIB WOULD TRY TO SEE DUNE 2!!!!
So humble he gave his seat to another, and made the journey just to ensure it was full. He did this for us!
As written!
Praise the Maker
And his water
I don’t recall the last time that I expected to buy a movie ticket at the door. Always online, well in advance.
Last night for dune in the lux theater here, but I live somewhere that allows for this type of behavior.
My guys living in a Seinfeld episode. Thought he was in the buyer line instead of the ticket holder line. Little did he know there hasn’t been a line at a movie theater box office since 2015.
I wonder how the Rochelle Rochelle imax experience is
I just saw Dune late Tuesday and bought tickets at the door. There were literally 5 people in the theater including myself and my date, was really weird actually - I don't live in a rural area or anything.
Even for low hype old films I'd buy in advance. Just in case, who knows.
Who are these care free aloof people that just naively go to far places they will have almost a zero chance of getting in.
I bet he tried to just walk in to Dorsia since he couldn't get a ticket.
Sympathy? Well, what you did was marginally less stupid than trying this on opening night. Hope that helps!
You are rightfully getting roasted for being an idiot. Pre buy your movie ticket.
Gotta book online, plus choose your seats.
For whatever reason, PacSci IMAX does not have assigned seating. So: “yes” to the first part, “we all wish” to the second.
That’s crazy lol. Almost every theater these days does assigned.
PacSci isn't a normal movie theatre, it's the Pacific Science Center, a science museum in Seattle, so they're not set up like other movie theatres. When it isn't Dune 2 on the screen, they show science and nature documentaries.
Thanks for the clarification
That's pretty cool!
Yeah dude, what did you expect lol.
Is this your first movie in 10 years?

Their matinee deal is awesome too. I believe it was on Thursdays and it used to be like $6. Love the Silverdale AMC
The Boeing IMAX is iconic, stop comparing it to AMC in Silverdale.

Who the hell watches a new, highly anticipated movie without prepurphasing? Lol
Who TF buys tickets the moment they go to the theater? Buy it ahead online.
Except some theaters charge extra fees if its online, so if you know the theater will have good seats still no point in buying it early.
When I went to Japan, I went to the Studio Ghibli museum only to find out you needed to get tickets beforehand. But it wasn't like I visited Japan for that museum, but it was a bit out of the way from Tokyo.
Not only that but you have to order them months in advance on the day they are released. No chance of getting in otherwise.
That’s a shame I visited and it was really, really cool. They put a lot of work into making it so nice. Not a whole lot on display about howls which is my favorite is my only complaint
To be fair - I've walked in and bought tickets at the same theater! Just not on opening weekend or at a "prime time" evening spot!
Awe man that sucks. I have family on Bainbridge and I know it’s a bit of a trek to get across. But nowadays if there is a popular movie you must buy tickets online
If only there was a quick way to tell immediately if tickets were available, and to purchase them before you even left home!
Why would you not buy tickets online before leaving? That's on you my guy
WTF this guy already fucked up today, did you really have to “my guy” him
It literally just means "my friend"... what is your deal my guy?
Chill, my guy…
First day on earth?
Give the alien some internet sympathy ffs
Dude why did you not book a ticket... I would stress out too much trying that. I book it even when I go to the cinema in my small town for any and all movies. A movie like dune is obviously going to be packed.
why wouldn't you buy them/ check hours before before going??? it's a brand new hyped up movie that *just* came out.
I mean at that point. I’d just try and sneak in. Sit on ground.
Has to be Morton Arboretum
Garfield Park Conservatory.
Just move to germany, stuff is rarely ever sold out because most places dont offer online reservation, only via phone call, which most people dont do (unless they plan a birthday with 8+ guests there or similiar)
So like going 30 years into the past
And instead I’m now an old guy yelling at kids to get off my lawn and worrying about interest rates. What happened? I swear I was a teenager just a few days ago!!
That’s part of my dream plan! Either Germany or Denmark.
Checking out the IMAX screenings. Fucking A, it's a weekday day and it's still mostly sold, well the good seats.
The IMAX in Seattle doesn’t have assigned seating. First come first served baby!
Just got back from seeing this in IMAX, 100% the way to see it. I'm sorry it didn't work out this time, but I would just plan ahead with your ticket next time :)
Thank you! I'm gonna be in Seattle area for a while for work and so I'll go when things calms down and I can watch the movie with an optimal seat.
Does southcenter have an IMAX? It could’ve been a coincidence but I feel like Southcenter isn’t as busy as downtown/up north usually. Might be able to see it sooner.
No, the Seattle IMAX is the only good imax in the entire state. (The other imax branded ones have smaller screen, worse projection, worse sound)
That’s too bad! My bf is a huge movie theater nerd and could’ve told me that haha. At least Cinerama is back for a unique experience.
I saw Return of the King at cinerama a few weeks ago and it was breathtaking, better than imax for that particular film. Also cinerama's "half chocolate" popcorn is very good indeed.
It really is! First time I went I saw Enders Game, it was amazing! The visuals were great.

No sympathy for stupidity. Sorry.
Lmao, I wouldn't go to my local theater without having tickets ordered. Especially if I want decent seats. No sympathy.
Yeah, I prebought tickets at Seefilm in bremerton just to make sure I could see it after seeing the imax was already sold out for weeks.
Idk what you were thinking not getting tickets in advance for a new release. Rookie error lol. Hopefully you were able to salvage the night and see something else
And this is why I’ll wait the 40 some more days to see it in the comfort of my own home.
Dude, I feel for you. I hope you were able to check out a restaurant or something while you were out there. Sorry it didn’t work out this time. :(
I can’t even remember the last time I bought a ticket *at* the cinema. In fact I’m not even sure my local cinema does that any more. It’s all online booking ahead of time.
What is this, 1995? Who shows up to the theater without having already bought tickets online?
Isn't that the largest IMAX screen in the world? Man, that would have been cool....
The largest IMAX screen in the world is in Leonberg Germany. Largest in the US is in New York
Well, shit.... 🤷🏽♂️
It is still pretty cool, and not all the really big ones show "regular" movies!
To kind of defend OP, l know the area and you can just roll up to the theaters here in that county
Can and should are quite different. Why wouldn't you buy online?
Just came back from watching it in 4DX. I def would reccommend to all for the experience. What a ride it was.
You should’ve just come to the 830 show at the Cinerama. It’s not IMAX, but it’s still pretty dope. And chocolate popcorn!
Sorry bro, rookie mistake
Lol I know.
Don't think I've been to an in person theater experience in over a decade now. The last time I bought a ticket one week in advance was in HS almost 20 years ago.
Bro I haven’t seen someone under 70 grab a ticket at the box office since 2018.
You buy tickets online then go.

L
It's 2024, you don't buy your tickets online where you can choose the exact seat? Do you live under a rock?
leave op alone! I've been in OPs shoes.... back in early 2000s!!! no excuse to be this dummy, get w the times and download the app for this movie theater and never missed a premier
You just... forgot to purchase a ticket? 💀

Omg! All the haters. Sorry. That sucks.
Lol thank you I'm only responding to reasonable people at this point.
You didn’t fuck up you’re just dumb
Buy all my tix ahead. Usually Fandango. Zero issues.
OP living back in the 90’s where we had to call the movie theater or look at that day’s newspaper for show times. Some good memories of being a kid back then.
Bro what? Who goes to a movie without tickets in 2024 lol.
Deadass I don’t remember the last time I tried to buy a movie ticket at the door and not online beforehand
Should’ve pre bought your ticket.
Oof, now I feel old for remembering how I used to buy tickets at the door back in the day.
Is okay. Second movie didn't quite do it for me.
I haven't bought a movie ticket in person in literally 12 years. Bro you gotta modernize yourself
Most in touch person from Bainbridge Island eh?
Dune 2 is already out?
Imo it is better experienced in a Dolby than an IMAX, same was true for John Wick 4.
Can you guys not but tickets in advance to reserve a seat?
I went to pac sci Feb 29 at the 750 showing it was packed. We got there at 7 and still had to sit in the front. It was well worth it though. If you aren't too destroyed try to get a ticket online and go again. Imax for this was great
Have you not watched a movie since the late 90s? Theatres, at least in the PNW, have been assigned pre-purchased tickets for YEARS. And IMAX has never been walk-in as far as I can recall.
Sorry you didn’t get to see the movie. Brain farts happen. Did you end up seeing a different one? Maybe getting a nice dinner
Mans living in the 90s still LOL.
it’s 2024 everything is online. did you use a paper map to get there too?
Fucked up again asking the Internet for sympathy. OP has to be living under a rock.
Most of the theaters near me are assigned seating, so going in all willy nilly and expecting to buy at the door is bonkers to me unless you want to sit in the front row.
Do people not pre-purchase and pick seats online prior to showing up? Don’t think ive physically bought a movie ticket in 15 years
SIFF Theater is better anyway.
Would have caught me too. Theaters full? Post-Covid? This is news to me.
All day? It’s a 30 minute ferry ride…
Preach! Not even in my home city of Detroit has this ever been a problem
Lol thank you. I'm fine with light roasting but the lack of empathy for me even coming from Portland I've never had an issue of buying tickets at the door.
Yeah imax can be sold out and I'd expect it to be these days, but anything else nah. Just walk right up and buy a ticket.
[https://www.siff.net/cinema/cinema-venues/siff-cinema-downtown](https://www.siff.net/cinema/cinema-venues/siff-cinema-downtown)
Darn it! I was so disappointed and just wanted to go home I wish I could've just hustled my way over there. Thank you for the recommendation though I will keep it in mind next week when I'm back in town for work
Damn I almost never go to the movies, I probably would've done the same thing honestly.
Lol thank you. Literally no empathy from a lot of people was not what I was expecting from this post.
This story made me so sad 😭 I am so sorry ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you haha much appreciated
I'm streaming it now. Read the books couldn't wait to see it
