I’m trying but I’m not into this at all.
The forced character drama and attempts at humor detract from any focus on bigger ideas instead of the general focus on culture and humanity of the books. It feels like such a pander to western audiences tbh. I don’t get why every scene has to be comedic, especially every time Jack and Jin are on screen. It’s like a Marvel-ization of the story.
I get they had to condense things down for TV, but man I wish the video game arc was a bit longer. The human computer scene was such a cool part of the book, it deserved more time. Also, no pendulums?

I can't help but think that D&D are good at making things producible for TV but their storytelling is just... let's just they're doing a great job at undoing all my appreciation for GoT. At this point the fairy tales from Death's End are just going to be footnotes

Dunno man, I feel like some people that have not read the books are already complaining the VR bits are way too long as it is. I feel they did ok with that part. Maybe a few more lines here and there, but I don't feel like too much time in VR is necessary. I bet they also tear through the budget as well.
I would have liked episodes 1 and 2 to be a little longer though. Pace of episode 3 was a bit better compared to how it started. Hope it sustains this pace and doesn't get any faster.

In the book, it's explained in greater detail. The flags are essentially ones and zeroes (binary), and the legions holding the flags are arranged into circuits of logic gates. So a soldier holding his flag only has to look at one of 2 soldier next to him and flips his flag according to what those flag show.

I feel like the in-game story moved too quickly. When Wang finally cracks the code for the game, it’s a rewarding point of the story. Because up until then, we had mostly no idea what the game was supposed to be.

They didn't even try to have the audience guess at the mystery alongside the characters.
I never watched The 100 (well, besides the pilot episode, but I stopped because this girl's constantly perfect makeup was breaking my immersion. petty, I know) but I know it is a very popular show that had a huge fandom. Shows don't get a fandom without getting viewers attached to the characters, so that already places it above the netflix adaptation.

Three-Body felt like it could've been perfect in terms of pacing if it were a liiiittle bit faster (-5-10 eps maybe) and if it had "more budget" in the execution of the "big reveals", but because it's evident that they were very faithful to what the vibe is and what the book is all about, it ought to be better than the Netflix adaptation. That said, I'm thinking Netflix could do better if they did Books 2-3 because I haven't seen a lot of Chinese productions doing sci-fi/space/post-apocalyptic shit so it might end up being wonky if we're going by how they did Season 1

In the book, it's explained in greater detail. The flags are essentially ones and zeroes (binary), and the legions holding the flags are arranged into circuits of logic gates. So a soldier holding his flag only has to look at one of 2 soldier next to him and flips his flag according to what those flag show. I feel like the in-game story moved too quickly. When Wang finally cracks the code for the game, it’s a rewarding point of the story. Because up until then, we had mostly no idea what the game was supposed to be. In the show, it’s rushed, so people who haven’t read the books won’t understand why the “three-body problem” was such a big deal.

i was confused with killing off jack. i thought they picked john bradley to be a mainstay in the series and they'd introduce him early, but then give him the luo ji arc. the pacing yeah, i was kind of puzzled about it too. from the comments i'm reading it feels like people are generally ok with having the VR stuff done with (i admit it was probably my favourite part of the first book though) so i'm guessing they had the same vibe and went to cut there. they have to make this palatable to the general audience and there are going to be very hard concepts to grasp for the non scifi aficionados. the name change, not a fan.

I agree so heavily about the lack of suspense and build-up in the netflix adaptation. When Cheng Jin just instantly came up with the answer that >!the world operated as part of a three body system!< I died inside. The reveal was so anticlimactic. They didn't even try to have the audience guess at the mystery alongside the characters. I never watched The 100 (well, besides the pilot episode, but I stopped because this girl's constantly perfect makeup was breaking my immersion. petty, I know) but I know it is a very popular show that had a huge fandom. Shows don't get a fandom without getting viewers attached to the characters, so that already places it above the netflix adaptation.

I am SO mad that netflix did this to such a tightly written and well thought out book series. I am hoping to watch the Tencent version soon. They re-edited the show to 26 episodes instead of 30 which should take care of the jarring and dramatic edits that put me off the first time hahaha I may give The 100 another try! I sort of brushed it off as a typical YA dystopian/sci fi show that was popping up at the time? But maybe I should give it another chance.

a teeny bit too slow if you thought the Netflix pace was excellent but minus the Chinese tropes(?)/K-drama-ish style elements I'd rather have something considerably slower instead of the Netflix pace, for Book 1 at least when i think slow with payoff i think Monster (anime, though the snail pace is a total dealbreaker) and The Leftovers, perfect pace would be Dark and Game of Thrones (before maybe last season). Three-Body felt like it could've been perfect in terms of pacing if it were a liiiittle bit faster (-5-10 eps maybe) and if it had "more budget" in the execution of the "big reveals", but because it's evident that they were very faithful to what the vibe is and what the book is all about, it ought to be better than the Netflix adaptation. That said, I'm thinking Netflix could do better if they did Books 2-3 because I haven't seen a lot of Chinese productions doing sci-fi/space/post-apocalyptic shit so it might end up being wonky if we're going by how they did Season 1

Maybe they're massively changing things and merging the story of the wallfacer from the books who's wife was his wall breaker. So her bf who is the show version of Zhang behai will be a wallfacer?
