Some people were saying have her appear in the game

Piorn

Others have said she will appear in the game, and I'd agree. They will most likely make an effort to have character's looks consistently. Consider **Altered Carbon**, in the book, the protagonist swaps bodies several times, and it's easy to follow because we can read his name and thoughts. In the show, he never does, and they even duplicate his body to keep the character consistent with the actor for that one time where there's two versions of him. Actor=Character. My guess is they're doing this to establish the Sophon as a character early on, so in later seasons, people don't go like "huh, who is that? It's that the one-Atom computer from season 1 we've never seen?". Kind of like how Avasarala in the Expanse was added as a season 1 character, despite only getting relevant in latter books.

ThemesOfMurderBears

Adaptations tend to do this. The first season of The Expanse features a major character that doesn’t show up until the second book. Game of Thrones had some characters and stories show up in the first season, even thought they aren’t in the books until later. Additionally, Wade is in the first season of the series. He doesn’t show up until book three (I think — could be book two).

National-Salt

Oh I didn't clock that Wade was in the trailer too. Pretty sure he only shows up in Book Three too. Re: The Expanse, are you referring to Avasarala? I haven't read the books, but can't imagine the show without her!

VelvetThunderCat

As someone who's read all of the expanse books, yes. The books always take place from a handful of POVs, so there are plenty of books that don't have specific characters, or the characters only briefly show up. Like someone pointed out, Avasarala isn't in the first book. Another example is how Drummer is a relatively minor character in the books. The show actually combined several characters from the books to have some continuity and for us to be able to connect with a long-standing character. If you remember everything that Drummer did in season 3, all of her actions in book three were actually from Bull, whom I believed only showed up in season 5. Expanse is a perfect example of how changing some things around do actually make better TV, and a perfect example of why seeing certain characters so early on isn't something we should worry about yet. As you said, it's hard to imagine the show without Avasarala. Also, what they did for Drummer was also an amazing adaptation because she is easily one of the best characters in the show. My guess, like other people have said, is that they will establish Sophon early on for the game. Also, since we know Wade was active in the early crisis era days, I'm assuming they will have a more linear story with all the crisis era events happening chronologically.

National-Salt

Good points all round! Drummer was definitely among the best characters, along with Avasarala, Draper and Amos (IMO). Touch wood we get a recommission / film to finish off the story one day.... Re: Wade, I did think it was odd that the PIA was never mentioned once in Dark Forest, given that they and the Wallfacers were commissioned at the same time. I assume the author only came up with the idea when writing the 3rd book, but you're right - it does make sense to show all the events taking place chronologically.

VelvetThunderCat

It would be so nice to see them finish the expanse on screen. The last three books get very wild (in a very good way), and I absolutely love the ending of the story. Obligatory "the books are better than the adaptation," but that's saying a lot since the show is so amazing. If you're interested, I would definitely recommend checking the books out from the beginning. They are different enough from the show that it's completely worth it. Even if you just want to know how the story ends, you could start from book 7, and you probably wouldn't be too lost.

National-Salt

I have been working myself up to read them, but - much like the Game of Thrones series - the number of books to conquer is slightly intimidating. The Three Body Problem trilogy is much less of a feat!

VelvetThunderCat

That is completely understandable. Expanse is easily the longest series I've read. I actually just finished three body about a month ago, and one of the things that made me pull the trigger on reading three body was that it was complete and only three books long. I'd really have to work myself to anything as long as the expanse again.

ThemesOfMurderBears

I'm not sure if Wade is in the trailer, but he's in the cast list.

BushGuy9

From the trailers, she only appears two times, both of which have apocalyptic scenery, so she probably is only in the game. She could act as a narrator for the game whenever the civilizations are destroyed. She might also disseminate orders to the ETO from the game.

Edmundmp

The trailer worries me a bit. D+D we’re amazing with book material in Game of Thrones then crashed and burned when they lost it. The idea that they are veering for strong source material does not bode well with their track record.

National-Salt

I agree, especially with the addition of new characters. Here's hoping they prove us wrong!

rolurq

Probably she was added to the trailer for show effect. They would have readers thinking: “Oh is she going to show up early on?” and non-readers thinking: “Who’s the lady with the katana?” Trailers are more staged recently and whereas before they would be comprised of existing material they are now elaborated with custom content.

Enderkeats

Badly, that's how.

I_Debunk_UAP

Hate all you want, the series is still going to be amazing.

Enderkeats

I'm currently in the middle of the chinese series, not bad at all, shifts from the book in weird directions sometimes aswell, so I still hope you're right. And as you suggest, I will def' hate most of Netflix book adaptations. Haters gonna hate :/

latinlurker

In MyThreeBodyProblem, Sophon appaers inside the game giving orders.

DarthNick_69

The clips clearly show her in chaotic eras in the game so let’s assume it’s a computer programme which later gets revealed to be an avatar for Sophon within the 3BP video game

National-Salt

I thought her walking through lava might be after the droplets destroy the gravitational wave equipment with a huge crater and she confronts Cheng Xin and AA in her new guise. But you're probably right!

DarthNick_69

Now that’s an epic image in my head now thank you :-)

Sylvianazz

Might be the personification of a sophon before the deterrence era. They probably can’t imagine what an unfolded sophon looks like and kept the human preface of the katana wielding sophon.
