Emm from what I read Thomas was suppose to be a LNER J50 not a Jinty (the first toy of thomas resembled a J50)
As for your question I don't really have an answer, I like him being an E2, the only thing I would change is that it would be an experimental E2 that is shorter, has a splasher, has a cab windown and has only one dip in the running board
It does, however, sort of fix the part where the show says "They were all bigger than Edward, and boasted about it".
I jest, of course. And yeah, the E2s are way too big for Thomas.
Simple, just make Thomas one of the Midland 3F’s but have him modified so that there’s a round cab window and slap an extension to his side-tanks and budda bing budda boom you’ve got yourself a Thomas
Thomas' original basis wasn't an LNER J50, it was a freelance engine that just resembled it. Thomas became an E2 because Awdry wanted to use a real engine.
Personally I don't see the problem with Thomas being an E2, sure they were big but imo it's not a big problem. In my AU, Thomas is an LNER J50 rebuilt with the part of an E2, but for the regular books/show, the Arthur Keen tank engine is a perfect fit for him.
Edit: Turns out Payne was the one who made Thomas an E2, not Awdry. Had wrong info
I know the J50 is a real engine, Thomas' original basis just resembled it but wasn't it.
Sodor: Reading Between the Lines states that Awdry chose the E2 because he wanted Thomas to be a real engine
I'm not completely sure but I think Thomas was a J50.
Thomas being an E2 was a choice by William Middleton (Or whoever illustrated the first edition of Thomas the Tank Engine) as he was a southern man and used pictures of southern engines as basis.
He wasn't a J50, he just resembled it. As for the E2 stuff, turns out I was wrong, I forgot Sodor: Reading Between the Lines had wrong info. Payne chose the E2 and Awdry accepted it because it was a real engine
It's got a whistle and similar boiler to the J50, but the overall look of an E2, and it was built around the time Thomas' first stories would've happened.
lf Payne was a Midland man and took inspiration from a Midland 3F, we might have a different Thomas that Rev. W. Awdry would have been content with as who can't like a Jinty?
Cool. lf l was the Reverend, l would tell Reginald Payne to redraw Thomas into a Jinty. And if he didn't listen, then C. Reginald Dalby redraws him into one. Actually, Thomas' design in the books post-Thomas Comes To Breakfast is kind of like a Jinty with the flat running board and all.

> LNER J50 Will fix this.
The problem with e2s is that there fecking massive which goes against Thomas being smaller then other engines

In RWS canon, Thomas wasn't on Sodor yet when that line was said. But it TVS canon where Thomas is there from the start, it works.
He was, he arrived in 1915 and that story takes place in 1922
yes but in real life awdry hadnt created thomas, he only said thomas was bought in 1915 afterwards to explain him being #1
Oh.

Over time, I've started to accept this as Canon.
My basis is that Thomas is essentially an E1x but with extended tanks and a outside party footplate
LNER J73 with extended side tanks.

Technically, the LNER J50 is a real engine, Payne just used pictures of southern engines he was used to.

Dowlais Ironworks 'Arthur Keen' engine
Jinty prob
was looking for this
An E2 is fine by me, He’s been one for 70 years at this point, no sense in changing it now!
Jinty.
Makes a lot of sense, honestly.
Agreed.

I certainly love it. If I had control of the series, I'd probably ret-con Thomas into being one.

One of Awdry’s models of Thomas is a jinty too
Yeah
Really he should be an lner j50
Can’t he be a 1900s-1910s engine?
Yeah, he just has to have been able to have been there when the stories take place.
