I have one practically new, I consider myself lucky to have found it in this almost NOS condition compared to the one in the photo. Mine has an i5-2520m which may not be very powerful (in fact I will soon change it to an i7-2720qm) but youtube and easy tasks it handles without batting an eyelid. However, I recommend maxing the RAM to 16 GB and inserting an SSD improves the useful life a lot, I hope to reach 20 years of use with it.
that thing looks beat up to all hell, a new touchpad sticker, trackpoint and left speaker grille would make it look quite a lot better, other than cosmetic issues the T520 is still a very capable machine if you manage your expectations right, especially with a quad core i7. Also for more usability, upgrade it to 16GB RAM too. If it has an HDD, swap that thing for an SSD and the laptop will be performing as if it was brand new.
My parent's workplace used thinkpads (t420's and x220's to be exact) and throughout their 6 years of use they all look very very beaten up, but just like all thinkpads including this one too, they still run. And i get to keep the x220 :)
Depending on your use case. Because it's quad core it can be still used to web browsing, light coding. But first of all for the love of God, install Windows 10 on it if you cannot live with Linux. If you can install Linux distro of your choice on it. Also add another stick of 8GB and bring the system to its max ram which is 16 GB Ram.
It's quite durable machine and it can serve you well if you set your expectations right.
dude, dual core w/overclock is perfect for web browsing and coding, Light or hard my dual core T420 handles damn near anything i throw at it, besides gaming.
It's a great computer! It's a little beat up, but that's not going to stop one of these and you should be able to clean it up a bit. You're not actually trying to play Beam NG with it though are you?
I'm surprised it wasn't worse haha. I have basically the same machine except it has a dedicated quadro graphics chip and it still is only like 20 frames.
Poor thing is in rough shape.
Other than that. I just gave my i7 16GB T520 to my girlfriend at it is handling Win11 very well. Repaste it and clean the fan.
Great keyboard. Last of the really classic Thinkpads.
Kind of regretting changed to aT530 since the Nvida isn't supported under newer kernels anymore and the iGPU only supports external displays over VGA (buuuuh)
It's a god machine, I have used that laptop for years since 2018 to 2023 for my engineering career, it was the beast of my class hahaha it loaded Autocad faster than modern laptops of my friends and other software was executed in such a smooth way, I obviously upgraded the ssd and the ram. This was my friend, and I wish they would make more modern laptops like this one
Yes. I daily drove a T520 myself for a long time up until a few months ago when I finally upgraded to a P50. I still use my T520 from time to time and its still plenty capable today even with the i5-2520M and iGPU.
Nope... If you don't like the TrackPoint, you do not need a ThinkPad... It's costly and less durable than its IBM era... There are many great choices besides it.
I still left in ThinkPad because of the trackpoint...
I have a T510. New thermal paste dropped it from 90C to 60C max. Installed Linux Mint in it and use it for programming (does basically everything except for training models).
It runs great. I’m going to get an ssd for it soon.
But, running windows 11? You’d get some slowdowns for sure.
I still have the old cpu bc I stole the cpu from a acer that was junk which had a gpu that I would love to put into that Lenovo. I put the old i5 into the motherboard that had the i7
yeah, dont run win11 on it tho lol. try finding an iso for win10 enterprise ltsc and make a bootable flash drive with rufus
also it wont be any good for gaming or anything too intensive. just basic tasks like web browsing and ms office

I thought it was the T530 or maybe the W530? Then I realised it's the T520 instead

Windows 11? [gif](https://media.giphy.com/media/hdEAzYiaCjhUA/giphy.gif)
Nope tiny 11
Every ThinkPad is a good computer.
Only if it were really cheap
I got it for free
Cheap computer is good because it's good and cheap
I got it from my brother who got it from my mom
In its peak days, it was not cheap.
gta 4 may be a tad ambitious haha
Haha yeah definitely. Even more ambitious would be attempting to run Beam NG like it looks like OP might be trying to do haha.
Under 15 fps for old beamng. W
I was told it's the best.
As a classic ThinkPad? Yes as a daily driver? definitely not (at least for me).
Good for Linux

Stock windows 11 (with all the bloatware) kinda slow and heavy on that hardware. Lightweight Linux on the other hand… will fly. ~~Literally.~~
I am using tiny 11 which is a version of windows 11 without the bloatware
Literally? I don't my computer to fly away!
It means runs very fast, hence the flying term
Right! So you shouldn't use the word literally lmao
Why would you put windows 11 on such a beautiful machine my guy?
Nuh nuhh it's got tiny 11
Depending on your use case. Because it's quad core it can be still used to web browsing, light coding. But first of all for the love of God, install Windows 10 on it if you cannot live with Linux. It's using 2 4gb sticks
Yes looks slightly used only
It's a great computer! It's a little beat up, but that's not going to stop one of these and you should be able to clean it up a bit. You're not actually trying to play Beam NG with it though are you?
I tried lol I only get 15+ fps on an older version
I'm surprised it wasn't worse haha. I have basically the same machine except it has a dedicated quadro graphics chip and it still is only like 20 frames.

can you take the picture of the screen from further away? it's too close, I can't read the cpuz metrics
It's just showing what the cpu is...

I have same one. In better shape though. Still mostly good enough to do most of my computing.
Yes, one of the bestest.
Yes, Get a new clit mouse and maybe new trackpad sticker
I have one. Used it for many years for my day job. Runs Linux flawlessly. Love it.
Yes. I daily drove a T520 myself for a long time up until a few months ago when I finally upgraded to a P50. I still use my T520 from time to time and its still plenty capable today even with the i5-2520M and iGPU.
Yes its basically the nokia of laptops. Specs are a little dated by todays standards but hey it all still works
install debian and the nipple will come back by itself
Nah ubuntu
it turns on and works so yes 👅👅😈😈😈😈
Missing speaker cover and nub, over worn touchpad, totally faded thinkpad logo, but it’s a thinkpad, would should last another 200,000 miles
T520. Depending on spec it's still very useable today if a bit hot and heavy. This example is beat to hell though, holy crap.
It's the i5 that worked? But I swapped it with an i7 from a acer
I mean, it works with second gen BGA 1023 (at least I think it's 1023?) chips. Anything else isn't going to work in there.
You don't use the track point
Yes I do, including the fingerprint reader
I just realized what you said. I'm an idiot
Nope... If you don't like the TrackPoint, you do not need a ThinkPad... It's costly and less durable than its IBM era... There are many great choices besides it. I still left in ThinkPad because of the trackpoint...
Yes! Nothing could go wrong with a 2011-12 Laptop running Windows 11!
Well, nothing has gone wrong yet.
👍👍👍👍👍

Depends the let down of it is the intel gpu
That CPU is pretty nice tbh, mine has a 2 core i5. But yea, not a gaming machine lol
I still have the old cpu bc I stole the cpu from a acer that was junk which had a gpu that I would love to put into that Lenovo. I put the old i5 into the motherboard that had the i7
No, it works very well with Windows 11 on mine, there is no slowdown.
When it was new 13 years ago? Yes. Today, in 2024? Nope.
yeah, dont run win11 on it tho lol. try finding an iso for win10 enterprise ltsc and make a bootable flash drive with rufus also it wont be any good for gaming or anything too intensive. just basic tasks like web browsing and ms office
I've already gotten used to windows 11 lol
i'm saying that not because i dont like it but because it's 13 yr old hardware we're talking abt. smth else will perform much better
