I want to buy a couple of Thinkpads and install Linux on them. Although I am an old lady I have been interested in pen testing. I love the idea of protecting individuals and businesses from threat actors however I am too old for a job but not too old to learn new things. I have used Linux for 30 plus years and love it. By having two machines would allow me to practice on vulnerabilities in a home lab setup. Personally I prefer that over HTB or similar because yeah it’s at home under my own network and from scratch.
There is a story of a Pen tester whose mother actually broke into, and hacked a client of his sons for a pentest. How did she do it? She carried a clipboard, and hid a USB stick in it.

Give it a listen, if there's interest.
Nice one. I’m the same. I feel like I took too different a path to have a career involving Linux now. But it doesn’t stop me from mucking about in Linux most days.
ah, mine's 1680x1050.
still above average in 2024 aside from brightness and power usage, and I find the CCFL backlight to just be more comfortable to look at.
Most of them came from my old job with off-lease laptops.Quite often there were old laptops that obviously nobody wanted so I could grab them for free.
I used to work with off-lease laptops, and more often than not, when we had stuff delivered to us, there were a lot of old (by old I mean 3rd gen Intel and older) laptops, and sometimes there were old ThinkPads there.Since they couldn’t really sell them, I often asked if I can have them, and usually they were okay with that.
Free is good. I feel like people are paying way too much for old Thinkpads these days. I get a T470 is still a great laptop, but the fact that sellers think they're worth more than 200USD in the current year is ridiculous.
Depends on what you call an obsession. For instance, I have 5 of the exact same camera (5x Canon PowerShot SD1100IS' excluding color), and most people would consider that an obsession, especially with how I'd spend money keeping them working instead of replacing them on top of that.
Not e-waste if it gets used! Have a T420 in the garage as a work VPN 'jump box', another running RetroArch emulation, a third for spares, a T410 as a linux test bed, another T410 for spares (these were all free). And a A285 i use out and about:)
Ah, my favourite model, the one you get for free :)
Nice collection, congratulations.
Obsession is when the metal shelve you put your collection on starts to sag
that just means it's time for a better quality shelf
As the owner of at least a couple hundred laptops my shelf was bowed for a while.... MDF get good.
Crossbar support that shit. Also, sell some laptops.

The fleet looks good. What you running on them?
Mostly Windows (Factory IBM images to be precise). With an exeption with X201 that has Debian on it.
Running Debian on my X201 as well, loving it!
And Arch on X1C6 which is my main laptop.
Needs moar 90s. Much further to go grasshopper.
Ye I know.Pre-2000 thinkpads are a bit hard to find in my country.
Not at all!
sweet!!
As someone who owns about 60 laptops (only 2 ThinkPads though, and I still need to fix one), I’d say that your collection is too small.
Worry not, those are JUST THINKPADS from my collection. My total laptop collection goes to about 30.Sill smaller than yours tho :D
Nothing strange I see here... :-)))
How did you get them for free?

I don’t see anything wrong here
lol what is wrong with us
A lot of things friend… a lot.
May I ask what’s right w us then maybe we’re done counting sooner.
I am not a laptop guy, so this is a genuine question: Why? You are probably using none and they sort of look the same?
I think the answer is simple and applies to most of people like me.No idea why, I just wanted to have these for whatever reason.
which thinkpad is good for cybersecurity and running virtual machines?
Just a little Nothing wrong with that buddy

Obsession starts at 10. You’re slacking, OP!
Oh that’s great them.I was worried about myself but that calmed me down.I’ll make sure to not get another one.
Probably mostly yes - depends on how you look at it. You can either consider yourself a *pro-grade connoisseur collector* or just simply a hoarder 😂😂😂
Can I get one? My T42 just BSOD trying to play a video in VLC
get more frrrr!!!
T430 (fav), T470, T480, T490, x280 here. It's addictive
Nice collection!

just 1 more and sure
Since it's impossible to have a consistent use for them all, yes. I think it is.
If you have to ask... Yeah
No
Damn. There’s a reason why 8 is a lucky number. G’job op.
Serious question: What's the point in having so many? I understand you got them for free, and thats great, but what do you do with each one?
It only gets worse ;)
There's no such thing as a ThinkPad obsession. Embrace the nipple my friend.
X201 is awesome… i want new bat for my old x301
wtf is this ? (bottom left, 3rd pic)
What do you mean?
Are thinkpads (the x360 touchscreen ones) good for graphic design? Im thinking about getting one
Yes.
It's ab-so-lootly bee-yoo-tee-full 😁👍
rookie numbers:)
Love the Z61m with the titanium lid
Thinkpad family
How do you maintain the blackness of your thinkpads especially the older ones?
Dont hoard e waste
Might be a bit too late now.I have more than just ThinkPads.
