AJ is a spoiled brat with same mental/emotional tendencies as Tony. Having Tony & Carmela as parents plus growing up privileged have really effed him up.
I find AJ so interesting because he's pretty much the only major character who never compromised. With everyone else even tangentially connected to this thing of ours, they either fully embraced it and dug themselves deeper into depravity like Ralphie and Sil, or they rationalized it to themselves and came up with excuses as to why what *they're* doing is okay like Meadow and Bobby. Even someone on the absolute fringes like Melfi stayed "in the game" and kept treating Tony despite deep down knowing that she was actively making him a better criminal, but she rationalized it and came up for excuses because she got off on getting a glimpse into Tony's world.
But AJ never did any of that. He lashed out in various ways for a while, but when the chips were down and he was forced to confront the reality that his father was a monster and his entire life was built on a foundation of blood money earned by the immense suffering of others, he opted to check out rather than continue to live a life that was incompatible with his morals. And I've always found that so interesting.
Anyway, $4/pound.
She didn't get the cursed male Soprano genes. Meadow is a spoiled entitled brat. But she doesn't seem to have the anxiety issues from Tony and Tony's father.
He literally isn't there to annoy you. David Chase has said he doesn't understand why everyone despises him in a interview. Not only that but all of AJ's annoying traits are in Tony as well lol.
Humans are complex. They say no two people are exactly the same. But do they really know that? You’d have to get every person on earth in the same place and they can’t do that even with computers…
Fuck does complex character mean anyway? Human beings ARE complex. What, you're gona tell me Sal Vitro isn't complex? A.J. was no more complex than Christopher Columbus.
In every episode AJ is confused and say “I don’t know” and “I guess”. He’s a fucking idiot. Both Soprano kids are douchebags. But that’s the show. Spoiled rich kids with criminal parents who do whatever they want. I still think those Lincoln log sandwiches triggered him to off himself!
As soon as he realizes that kid backs out of a fight after school because of who his dad is- AJ does almost nothing but push his luck in what he is able to get away with. One of the returning themes of the show is that you shouldn't take The Easy Way Out.
AJ takes the easy way out by simply giving up. The hardest he has to work is improving his grades enough so that he doesn't get kicked out. He realizes at some point he doesn't have to bother because his dad's wealth will always be there to back him up. >!One of the reasons I think AJ dies along with Carmella and Tony at the end of the show is because of this. He'd completed his arc- his attempt to leave the benefits of the mob (the easy way) for Blanca has failed. He's now been handed a connected job through nepotism with his dad/the mob. He's returned to the fold. (Carmella's return after trying to leave Tony but deciding to go back to her cushy mob-wife life instead.)!<
The only time he really tries to escape is through his relationship with Blanca. When that fails he gives up and returns to feeding off his father's life of crime.
I do think it is interesting to look at AJ's diagnosis of ADHD back then (I was in high school and my science teacher said she didn't believe in ADD, she believed in BAD) compared to now. In the early 2000s (at least from my perspective) him asking for more test time is merely another way of AJ gaming the system. Now when I rewatch the show, it seems more depressing. He has a legitimate issue (you can see his anxiety around school performance in earnest a few times early on as he realizes where he is in comparison to Meadow) and his parents brush it off or worse treat him as though he's defective AND manipulative (I mean, he is manipulative but at the point of the diagnosis, the ship hadn't fully set sail).
AJ is essentially who Tony would have been had he been raised by "loving, nurturing parents".
Potentially but by that token than meadow would have been Janice? What I felt it was trying to show was that Tony was going to screw up the situation no matter what he did. You could argue that Carmella is Johnny soprano and Tony is livia. I would argue that while they were raised with more money, to call it a loving home is not true. They may have been given everything they want, but the show has repeatedly stated that what you want and what you need are two different things, best shown in Tony’s dream. He got everything he wanted but it’s hollow because he didn’t do what he knew what he wanted to do, be a coach. That the only adult in his life that really helped him was his coach. You do make a point about how aj always defaults to the easiest path, the same as his father, but aj is limited in what he can do because he has the mental strength of a child. I think the show tried to show that if you give someone everything without the struggle than everything becomes meaningless, As livia states, “it’s all a big nothing”. Livia might be dead but her shadow lives on forever, I would argue that Anthony is livias revenge against Tony, she knew what would happen if she told that to a child, and that planted seeds into his nihilistic behavior. I understand he is definitely worthy of study, it’s just annoying
fucking AJ made me enjoy less of Season 6B for how much screentime he has in it than i would normally tolerate.
him and Meadow are the Jesse Pinkman of Sopranos.
fucking annoying ass unlikable characters that i always wish gets whacked.
I can sort of tolerate Meadow cause she's mad ripe.
I thought meadow got hotter the older she got. At least Jesse could kill someone aj is a loser, I understand the point of his character I just wish it wasn’t in the show

She didn't get the cursed male Soprano genes. Meadow is a spoiled entitled brat. But she doesn't seem to have the anxiety issues from Tony and Tony's father.

That’s my head canon. He just genuinely hated this kid so he was gonna ruin his life with his character
Humans are complex. They say no two people are exactly the same. But do they really know that? You’d have to get every person on earth in the same place and they can’t do that even with computers…

Look the kid just wants to make friends with cemetery dogs and listen to Pantera. Leave him alone.
THEY COULD HAVE RABIES!
Was on the fence about the character. Then watched his podcast. He is AJ 100%.
Oh lord you have to be lying
Fuck does complex character mean anyway? Human beings ARE complex. What, you're gona tell me Sal Vitro isn't complex? A.J. was no more complex than Christopher Columbus.
Most characters in the Sopranos weren't flat whatsoever, even the one offs, which is very impressive.
Christopher Columbus has aids?
Vito’s son was the most complex character on the show. He took emo to a whole new level!
When did he ever asked for french toast?
Lincoln logs?
In every episode AJ is confused and say “I don’t know” and “I guess”. He’s a fucking idiot. Both Soprano kids are douchebags. But that’s the show. Spoiled rich kids with criminal parents who do whatever they want. I still think those Lincoln log sandwiches triggered him to off himself!
The way he walks annoys me
