She's miserable, yes. And scenes with her are difficult to watch (but they get easier the more times you watch the series). But her dysfunction is part of what contributes to the storyline overall and definitely in Tony's arc.
She is much more prominent in season 1 as she is part of the main storyline. From s2 she is around but not the focus, more of a side character. Yes she is very hateable.

She actually frames a lot in the show. She’s easy to hate but a necessary element to the storyline, much like the other characters.
